Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

  Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

  Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Page deletion

Hi,

I had created the page in the name of MIRABEL TECHNOLOGIES ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirabel_Technologies) on gathering enough information after very long research from various sources found on the internet. I have chosen the content only from trusted resources. When I checked it today the page was flagged as spam and deleted completely. Can I have your review to retrieve the page that I had created on Wikipedia? Also, suggest me a few guidelines and ideas in creating pages.

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by KerryBuch (talkcontribs) 08:09, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi KerryBuch and welcome to Wikipedia. Unfortunately, Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and the article was largely plagiarized. You will have to start from scratch as nothing was worth saving. As well, please respond to Praxidicae's concern. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 13:20, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

Re: Ethan Brooks Paisley deletion

I would like to address why Ethan Brooks Paisley, a notable young filmmaker/actor, had his Wikipedia page removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hannahandos1 (talkcontribs) 02:41, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

Hannahandos1 You mean besides the fact it was deleted 3 times under the name Ethan Paisley? The article was written in a promotional manner I strongly recommend against re-creating it. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 02:44, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

Edit update

Hello, I understand that you are claiming that I am adding unsourced content to the Hewlett High School page. I am a primary source as I have first hand knowledge of everything that I am writing. I am unsure how to cite this. The information is not from a website, however it is from my personal experience. I tried to reference the statement pertaining to Jack Hoffman on Masterchef Jr- link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bR67SYkaPMU but I was not sure how to add it. I wish to expand on the page but at the same time i am not sure how to add this as a citation. Please provide me with guidance as I would assume that this is why you are not accepting the edit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.113.97.111 (talk) 18:21, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Gayatri 2020 and welcome to Wikipedia. Would you be so kind as to tell me the name of the article? HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 17:34, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi! The name of the article is Cyber Chasse Inc.Gayatri 2020 (talk) 08:58, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Gayatri 2020 and thanks for the reply. May I ask if you are in any way connected to this company? Regarding the deletion, none of the text followed our neutral point of view policy. For example, sentences like "With great experience in cloud computing services, Cyber Chasse empowers businesses to store, manage and access...." (emphasis mine) are more for a companies own website than a neutral encyclopedia. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 19:59, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

John L. Merit page review

Hello, could you specify what items you are referring to? Also, could you please help me with the citation field for the page if that was also a concern to the review process. Thank you! Nataliebrassinga (talk) 22:39, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi Nataliebrassinga and thanks for the reply. Everything on Wikipedia must be cited to a reliable source and verifiable. A way to achieve this is using WP:Inline citations. Your article simply lists archives in general at the very bottom and does not specify which text is from the archives or the obituary. If Merit is as influential as he seems, there should be much more accessible information on him. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 22:50, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

VanessaCurty (talk) 01:20, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi VanessaCurty and welcome to Wikipedia. I'm sorry about your school assignment but your teacher should've familiarized themselves with Wikipedia guidelines before sending students onto this website. The article you are attempting to publish needs to follow WP:CREATIVE/WP:ANYBIO and requires significant coverage (not merely mentions in passing) in multiple independent reliable secondary sources. If it fails these criteria, it will not become a Wikipedia article. As well, I will not be emailing you off-Wikipedia and have removed your personal email. I suggest checking out our new editor help desk and having your teacher read over Wikipedia:Student assignments. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 05:36, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

Petar Kokotovic

Hi, you removed my edits to the page of Petar V. Kokotovic. I worked hard on it to change an incompetently written article to something well written, accurate, and complete.

You removed my edits because "citations are missing." I made the edits on the basis of Petar Kokotovic's curriculum vitae. This document is not in the public domain. I have it because I am personally close to Professor Kokotovic. I am a senior professor like Kokotovic and he was my PhD advisor decades ago. Nobody knows his work more closely than I do.

Would you please restore the work that I did. I don't have the time to re-create it. The current version is not serving the community well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tucylivy (talkcontribs) 16:06, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

As a WikiCup judge, I have removed your submission of this DYK from your submissions page at the WikiCup, because Round1 finished on 26 February. It will be eligible for Round2 when it opens on the 1st March, and will get you off to a flying start! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:36, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Cwmhiraeth Oops! Thank you. I didn't notice the date was February 27 because it was still the 26th where I am. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 07:46, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
That hadn't occurred to me. About the other DYK that I mentioned on the DYK discussion page, the point I was trying to make was that there was no mechanism to check the actions of a completely inexperienced reviewer/promoter, who had never even had a DYK of his own, and whose promotion slipped through without anybody noticing. Judging by the comments there, nobody else seems worried about this aspect. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:50, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Cwmhiraeth, no worries. I understood your concern. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 01:51, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

About the recently deleted articles about Laila Aziz

Hello, HickoryOughtShirt?4. Recently I was under investigation and got banned for Sock puppetry, but I had unblock request which was accepted by the admin per conditions I agreed. You could look to my talk for more information about the case. While I was banned, the article about Laila Aziz was deleted under the G5 rule and since I couldn't dispute it then, i'm now writing to you now. The article was started and I did a clean up on it and added additional information and references. If i'm correct it was a draft and was reviewed at WP:AFC or it had a dispute that ended up with an agree that the article meet the criteria for notability and was fully accepted. Because of that I believe my ban hasn't impacted the quality of the article, I would like to ask you for a second review by you and if so, to be restored or at least be returned for discussion. If you need more information feel free to ask me, i'll gladly answer everything and i'll be waiting for your decision. Best Regards, Chris Calvin (talk) 00:32, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
