Your contributed article, Brunei Darussalam at the 2010 Commonwealth Games
editHello, I notice that you recently created a new page, Brunei Darussalam at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as yourself. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page - 2010 Commonwealth Games. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will to continue helping improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at 2010 Commonwealth Games - you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.
If you think that the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Skamecrazy123 (talk) 13:38, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- to do this for each page is a waste of time .... these are all holding pages in readiness for the Commonwealth Games later this year .... to delete them now will have wasted MY time, wasted YOUR time - because the pages will have to be re-done later in the year. Historyboy2010 (talk) 14:14, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- Well why not do them later in the year then. At the moment they tell us nothing that the main Commonwealth Games 2010 page doesn't already tell us. Plus its another two and a half months until these games begin. Why not just userfy them until the games are a little closer? --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 15:33, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Commonwealth Games articles
editIf you want to save these for later, then I would highly recommend userfying them. If you need a hand doing that, drop me a message and I will gladly help. As it stands though, I see no reason to keep these as articles when the event for which they have been created is two and a half to three months away. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 16:25, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, friend
editIt looks like you're having the initial WTF moment bumping into the way that the Wikipedia machine works... Don't get discouraged. Here's what you need to do...
First: Save your work. FAST. Open up each of these pages in the edit window, select ALL, and copy. Then open up a new MS Word document and paste into that.
Second: When you're writing new stuff, start it out as an MS Word document, or some such, using the standard Wikipedia code (double equals signs on each side of headlines, etc.). Then when your article is ready to roll, start the page.
Third: Wikipedia notability rules are really hard to grasp and rather a pain in the ass. There are people who are sticklers for following these rules closely who are ready and willing to sink anything that doesn't make it over the bar ("deletionists"). It happens. Don't get mad, just choose your subjects to write about carefully and make sure they are sourced well enough to make it over the bar. If you have any question about whether a topic will fly or not, feel free to drop me a line — I've got a pretty good sense of these things.
Fourth: Be aware that the computer flags the contributions of newcomers, so when you are just starting out you will have lots of people looking over your shoulder. Don't stress about it, the longer you stick around, the less of an issue this becomes. Every page, except those started by old farts, gets looked at by someone — so just try to make sure that your article gets over the "notability" bar, because somebody is going to be there to call you on it if it doesn't.
If you'd like to vent or have any questions, feel free to drop me a line MutantPop@aol.com or hit me up on my WP talk page. Don't quit. Dust yourself off and start over. Carrite (talk) 23:17, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- Looks like I am too late - an eager deletionist has already done his dirty work Historyboy2010 (talk) 22:47, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
- Nothing here is ever really destroyed — just made inaccessible. Give it a couple days and then write to the deleting administrator asking nicely if you can somehow get access to your work. Your instinct not to vent on them is a good one — growl to yourself, screaming at them won't help. Another option (probably the one I'd advise) is just to pick yourself up and dust yourself off and start over on something else. best, —Tim Carrite (talk) 23:33, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Userfying
editDon't give up mate. It took me a lot of getting used to when I first started, but I enjoy it now that things have clicked together. As Carrite has said, please feel free to drop me a line at my user talk page if you need a hand with anything. Now, as to the subject of userfying:
- First of all, create a new heading on your user page, and call it something like works in progress
- Secondly, say you wanted to write an article about cheese. You would put this on your user page. /Cheese (click on the edit button to see the code)<---i.e. type two square opening brackets, a slash and the Title, two square closing brackets — then click the new redlink that this makes... —Carrite
- Click on the link you have just created. You will then be able to draft an article without the risk of it getting speedily deleted. When you feel you have a ready article, you can simply move it from the user page.
Any questions, please feel free to drop me a line. I hope this helped. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 23:56, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
CGAs at the 2010 Commonwealth Games
editI'm afraid I didn't create them - I edited them a little after they were created, but I didn't create them. To be perfectly honest, sports articles are a bit of a mystery to me. I wish I could give you more advice than that, but I really can't.
What I will do is echo the poster above me; please don't give up. I know things around here can take some getting used to - I've pulled more than a few stupid moves in my day. (Some would argue that my entire career here consists of stupid moves, actually...but that's a topic for another time.) But it would be a great shame to lose a valuable contributor over something like this. I do hope you reconsider. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:31, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

RE: Userfying
editYou have almost got it right mate, you just need to click on those red links you have created, and put the contents inside. Do you need a hand? --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 01:15, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yes please Historyboy2010 (talk) 01:34, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
- All done mate. Just click on the links in your user page and you should find the stuff you were working on. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 09:59, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

editHi Historyboy2010, I have noticed your contributions to the XX at the 2010 Commonwealth Games articles. WikiProject Olympics has actually created a Manual of Style (MoS) on Nations at the XX (multi-sport event) articles. You can access it here. While the MoS pertains to the Olympics, it can be used just as well in the relevant Commonwealth Games articles, with a few tweaks here and there. You can use this article Palau at the 2008 Summer Olympics as a model – it has been promoted to GA status. This should help in your editing activities :) Cheers, ANGCHENRUI Talk♨ 03:54, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hello there! Just a quick word to say I've been tweaking something in your user-space drafts (e.g. like this). It's normally a good idea to put a colon (:) before the categories when you're working on something on your own pages. This stops it being actively listed at, say, Category:Nations at the 2010 Commonwealth Games while it's still a work in progress but will leave the category links at the bottom of the draft. Simply remove the colons when you move or copy things to the mainspace. Cheers! SFB 13:50, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
