Article on Maung Maung Gyi (painter)

Hello,

Regarding the Maung Maung Gyi article where notes have been added requesting "page needed", they cannot be provided at this time. The works "in Burmese" which I have quoted in various Wikipedia articles on Burmese painters, were from translations which I privately commissioned over a period of about four years by an extremely qialified bilingual Burmese writer with a higher degree in English Linguistics. This was for a book which I wrote on the history of Burmese painting (368 pages, 10-pages of bibliography) which took 15 years to write. It is considered a good book and it has received strong reviews. I could, of course, add page numbers from those that the translator put on the various manuscripts which he provided me but as the translations have not appeared in English, the page numbers would be meaningless to the reader. Don't forget Categories!

Greetings, your article Saya Saung looks great overall, but don't forget to add WP:Categories whenever you start an article! I found your article at WP:UNCAT, where it automatically fell for lack of categories. Make sure to add cats so interested readers can find your article more easily!

Also, on the Talk page I added WP:WikiProject Burma so that other authors covering Burmese topics can track the article, so consider adding WP:WikiProjects to the Talk pages of articles you start.

Ways to improve Ba Zaw

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Interesting article. Remember to remove spaces in-between the citation brackets and the text itself (e.g., "blah blah.[1]" not "blah blah. [1]").

Hi. I'm happy to help, so let's discuss here. With regard to your question "Adding external link. (if you go into Ranard's "Bio" on his website, ranard.com, you do find text about his collections. Is this OK? for citation in "Collections"?". First, you need to link to the specific page in his site, for example http://johnranard.com/john-netscape/bio/bio_1.html. And, we try not to take the subject's word on such matters about themselves, (see WP:ABOUTSELF), preferring instead that of the institution itself and/or a reliable disinterested source (see WP:RELIABLE). -Lopifalko (talk) 08:42, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi Lopifalko. Your editing on this has been really excellent. Thanks much. I can understand the problem of not taking the photographer's word for whether or not OSI collected his works, or the Andrei Sakharov Museum or Museum of World Culture for that matter. But it is highly unlikely that the first two institutions have or would publish their collection of work online. In the one case, OSI is not in the business of collecting work although their collection of items is notable and prestigious. The work might simply be hanging in an office in NYC, Moscow or Eastern Europe. I doubt that they would advertise that they had it. In the second case, the Andrei Sakharov Museum: This is also a prestigious and notable institution but the Sakharov Museum in mainly devoted to the memory of Sakharov and Peace Issues. They also do not and would not advertise Collections (from my explorations of their site). In the case of the Museum of World Culture, Gothenberg, I saw a piece by Ranard in their Collections some time ago, but I cannot locate it now. Their collection is massive. I have been trying to find verification of Ranard's on their site but cannot at this moment. I haven't much finesse on carrying on these discussion through "Talk". I hope this message gets through. Thanks, and thank you for your work on this. Your knowledge about the specifics is much deeper than what I have, I'm approaching this on an 'in principal' way. I see your difficulty with sourcing. Usually the Collections section is public institutions / museums / permanent collections and we would say something like "Ranard's work is held in the following collections / permanent collections", so an introductory line could be added that shows these aren't only permanent collections. If you cannot find a better ref then I recommend that you continue as you are with using Ranard's own site, but additionally include a Note to point out what you say above, if only to deter other potentially future critics of the process, or to point the way to other editors wishing to try to investigate yet further. I'll add a Notes section so you can see how to create them, or if you'd prefer then I can add any such notes. -Lopifalko (talk) 09:17, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

Lopifalko, I'd like to see how you use the Notes you refer to (above). Some of the abovd is difficult for me to follow.

However, another matter: I think the online reference in "External Links" to the Moving 10 show at OSI, which you removed, should stay in. My reasons for this are 1) I very much doubt that readers would pick up on the footnote next to the exhibition itself (under "Exhibitions") as a place where they can view Ranard's work. If you put it in "External Links", with a note about it, it is in a prominent place which people who love photography are almost sure to catch 2) These photographs are quite powerful and come over much better than the works on Ranard's site, which has a lot of grey background, which somewhat ruins the power of the presentation to the onlooker 3) this particular selection of 24 photographs on HIV/AIDS is excellent, in my opinion, and stresses what the text says about Ranard, that he did not exploit the "fiendish" aspects of drug users, ie, respected their humanity.Hsaya (talk) 09:46, 8 November 2015 (UTC)Hsaya
