Witzenberg Municipality

Good day Htonl. Please be advised that Witzenberg Municipality is in the process of updating its social networking pages as many unauthorised pages have been created for the smaller municipalities in the Western Cape. We have placed information on Wikipedia regarding projects executed, which you have removed. Kindly email the Manager: Marketing & Communication at Witzenberg Muncipality on anette@witzenberg.gov.za to verify your authority to edit official information as the Department of Local Government is currently looking into this matter. Your co operation in this regard would be greatly appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Witzenberg (talkcontribs) 20:30, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Request - Change Brazilian State of Alagoas Colour at File:World_homosexuality_laws.svg

Hello,

I've been to find someone who can edit maps when your name came across on wikipedia. It's been three weeks since gay marriage has been legalized in the Brazilian state of Alagoas, I tried to change the colour of the state on the map, but I must not do it myself, since my work with inkscape ended up looking odd. This has already been discussed at the talk page of the article regarding to the situation if you want to read it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_Alagoas. Can you help us change the state colour to navy blue? Thanks. Denisxavier (talk) 05:39, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

  Done - htonl (talk) 09:11, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sorry to but in like this Htonl, but yipee!! I'm so glad that the first Brazilian state now does gay marriage! :D I am here to ask you Htonl if there are any other countries this year that may be decriminisaling homosexuality or legalising gay marriage? I know the UK will allow it in 2015! ;) But any news from any other countries? Thanks Bezuidenhout (talk) 09:15, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
As far as I know, Washington state in the US is quite likely to get gay marriage, and Maryland or New Jersey might also get it. I don't know of any other upcoming changes. - htonl (talk) 09:24, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Nice to see changing attitudes in some parts of America. Let's hope that 2012 is a good year for LGBT rights :) Bezuidenhout (talk) 11:24, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your help, Htonl. Greetings from Alagoas, Brazil. Denisxavier (talk) 16:50, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have just realized that there's another map to be updated: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:State_recognition_of_same-sex_relationships_(South_America).svg Can you help us (again)? Thanks. Denisxavier (talk) 17:31, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Jacobus Duminy

This is a bit of a long shot, but I see you have contributed to a lot of articles about Cape Town and the university. I've just expanded Jacobus Duminy from a cricket standpoint, but can't help feeling that his notability rests as much on his academic career, where he was vice-chancellor of UCT, as on his (somewhat patchy) cricket career (he played Test cricket, but pretty unsuccessfully). Perhaps you might have some material that could give his article a bit more balance... or you might know of someone else who could help. Thanks. Johnlp (talk) 12:01, 2 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Main places and pops

Hi Htonl, when you added population figures for the main census places of Witzenberg Local Municipality and other WC municipalities, did you get them from a pdf or some other file or did you copy them one by one from adrianfrith.com? If it's the former, can you give me a link so I can add the populations for all the other municipalities? Thank you for your attention and your tireless contributions to the SA Wikiproject!--eh bien mon prince (talk) 00:25, 8 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm the proprietor of adrianfrith.com, so I have access to the underlying database. There's a spreadsheet at http://adrianfrith.com/mainplaces.xls which has all the main place demographic data. - htonl (talk) 00:35, 8 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
This file will make things a lot easier, thank you! Also, my compliments for your website, it's well-designed and contains a lot of information.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 00:43, 8 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
There's a data mismatch issue with the languages of Pomfret, North West. It seems to affect all places with a large percentage of 'other' as a first language.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 21:58, 13 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sorry

I do not know what I did with the article. Do not know where to start. But now I read the instructions, I will improve. Thank you!

HIV/AIDS in South African townships

Hey Htonl! I noticed that you edited my new article, HIV/AIDS in South African townships, and that you live in Cape Town. I was wondering what you think of the article and if you have any comments or suggestions, particularly because you probably have more firsthand experience with the issue than I do. Thanks!

South Africa rail network map

Hi Htonl!

Regarding your SA rail network map...none of the network around Aliwal North is functioning anymore! Rails are rusted, vandalized (stripped) here & there...guess no train will ever pass here again?

(Line= Dreunberg near Burgersdorp via Aliwal North to Barkly East)

I see u said: "Including closed lines but not including lines which have been lifted." Good reasoning.

Thanks for your relentless work on Wikipedia, wish u could help me technically on Afr-Wiki!! (I'm translating all fruit&vegs into Afrikaans - need a usefull template)

Enjoy the cold weather, Aliwal2012 (talk) 10:05, 10 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ja, I'm working on modifying the map to indicate closed lines (maybe in a light grey) but it's difficult to be sure what the status is of various lines as Spoornet opens and closes them. As you know, some of them are closed but still functional and others are not officially lifted but basically unusable. - htonl (talk) 12:55, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, read Aliwal2012 (talk) 13:34, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've actually updated the map to show closed lines in light grey. - htonl (talk) 15:42, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Denel SOC Ltd.

Is "SOC Ltd" the proper legally recognised "suffix" for the company name? I see on their website they use "Denel SOC" without the "Ltd". I presume this is a recent change in legislation regulating company names. Does the same apply to Denel's subsidiaries? Have other state companies also changed their names like this? Roger (talk) 07:58, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's the new Companies Act No. 71 of 2008 - section 11(3)(c) to be specific - which provides that

a company name, irrespective of its form or language, must end with one of the following expressions, as appropriate for the category of the particular company: [...] (iv) The expression "SOC Ltd." in the case of a state-owned company.

The definition of "state-owned company" is

an enterprise that is registered in terms of this Act as a company, and either— (a) is listed as a public entity in Schedule 2 or 3 of the Public Finance Management Act, 1999 (Act No. 1 of 1999); or [...]

DENEL is listed in Schedule 2 of the PFMA, which also includes "Any subsidiary or entity under the ownership control of the above public entities", so it is legally "SOC Ltd." as are any subsidiaries that are registered South African companies. The other state-owned companies have not been fully consistent in reflecting this change, but for example Transnet's website refers to "Transnet SOC Ltd.", Eskom uses "Eskom Holdings SOC Limited", and PetroSA uses "Petroleum, Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (SOC) Ltd". - htonl (talk) 10:22, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I find it interesting that legislation from 2008 is only now resulting in changes to websites - 4 years later! Roger (talk) 10:30, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
The Companies Act was greatly delayed by various legal complications and it only came into force in May of 2011. - htonl (talk) 10:34, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Map Co-ordinate request

Hi htonl

I'm trying to get hold of the co-ordinates of South African municipality boundaries. I expect you would have used them for creating the maps. Are you able to share them, or point me in the right direction to get them?

Thanks Capesean 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I'll upload the files to my website this evening when I get home. - htonl (talk) 13:58, 29 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
You can download the file here (it's a 50MB zip). - htonl (talk) 18:19, 29 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Htonl - you're an absolute legend, thank you! May I ask where you got these from, are they the official Demarcation Board co-ords? I assume they're the latest, i.e. post 2011? I couldn't find anything on the Demarcation website. Thanks again. Sean - 4 September 2012 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Capesean (talkcontribs) 07:04, 4 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

They are the official Demarcation Board files, which I got through a contact in the DA who was involved in the ward delimitation process. The files reflect the boundaries used at the 2011 local elections, which as far as I know will stay the boundaries (except maybe for minor adjustments) until 2016. You can actually download the shapefiles from the Demarcation Board website (click Downloads, then Boundary Data) but for some reason each district council is in a separate file.

DYK nomination

I have nominated the article Witchcraft Suppression Act, 1957 for Did you know?. I find it quite extraordinary that calling someone a wizard is against the law. --NJR_ZA (talk) 16:44, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

You want to see something nuts? In S v Mashibye [2005] ZAGPHC 292, the defendant called someone else a wizard while "extremely drunk", and even though the other man didn't care about it, the magistrate sentenced him to the maximum of ten years! The High Court on review reduced it to an effective two years, which is still pretty ridiculous. On the other hand, being accused of witchcraft can still get you killed in some parts of the country, so I guess there's some justification for it. - htonl (talk) 17:30, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
WOW, I would not have expected that law to be enforced by any court. Makes one wonder if we live in 2012 or 1712. --NJR_ZA (talk) 17:52, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
As the act was apparently based on an English statute of 1735, you may not be that far off... - htonl (talk) 18:03, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

New Census Info

Hi Htonl, nice to see all the new fresh data from the recent census and the (fairly) good results from the increase in living standards! :) But I was wondering if you could possibly make a map with the change in percentage of the 4 main ethnic groups please? It would save me a lot of time in going through every municipality and seeing its demographic transisition. Thanks for your time and hope it's at least getting warmer by you.. :) Bezuidenhout (talk) 21:32, 1 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I can, once Stats SA makes the data available - they put the municipal data on their website yesterday, but today they've taken it off again for some reason. And yes, it's getting pretty hot here now. :) - htonl (talk) 09:36, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Also, I assume you mean four maps, one for each "group"? - htonl (talk) 11:23, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes :) and in a sense that it shows the percentage change (e.g. 18>15% in Cape Town) for white people and respectively for all ethnic groups, and a special case for the new "other" category just showing percentages. I think the results are good in some respects as it shows a "leveling out" of ethnic groups, and I'm shocked at the sudden change in the NC from Coloured to Black majority! I am so very jealous I'm basically freezing my legs off here :( Bezuidenhout (talk) 15:32, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've drawn these maps. Are they what you were looking for? - htonl (talk) 01:34, 15 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Those are exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Htonl :) Bezuidenhout (talk) 07:27, 15 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the maps and your efforts to update all the info Htonl, was wondering if you ever put up any more maps like that (like for example for population change, language change) can you please just send me the link to check them out? :) Thanks again for everything Bezuidenhout (talk) 18:28, 16 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Census 2001 figures

Hi Adrian,

Can u please inspect the Census 2001 figures cited at Lulekani [2] and Namakgale [3]. They don't make sense, esp pop. per sq km (1.29 and 2995.47)! Thanks, Aliwal2012 (talk)

Nothing wrong with Namakgale - as far as I can tell it is just really densely populated. For Lulekani, the wrong census place was being used because Stats SA actually calls the place Humulani. - htonl (talk) 19:46, 9 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your quick response & fixes, I must say Namakgale is densely populated! A girlfriend of mine comes from there.

Masilonyana Local Municipality

Hi Htonl, hope you're doing fine, I was wondering what exactly is happening in this municipality. The statistics show it has gone form 80,000 inhabitants in 2007 (community survey) to just 28,000 in 2011, and the new figures show the largest language is Tswana (55%), and S. Sotho (which I would have thought would be the majority in the centre of the Free State) is only 8%?! Thanks :) Bezuidenhout (talk) 15:03, 10 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

The infobox had the code for the Tokologo municipality, which caused the wrong stats to be displayed. Thanks for noticing! - htonl (talk) 15:14, 10 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
