Unpopulated SA places

Hi again Htonl, hope you are well. I was wondering if you had some time if you could map places in South Africa (main places) which has 0 inhabitants such as Greater St Lucia. Thanks! Bezuidenhout (talk) 14:04, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

With pleasure. I'll probably have time to look at it this weekend. - htonl (talk) 09:09, 29 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Htonl! As always, appreciate it :) Bezuidenhout (talk) 11:19, 29 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Well, here's a map of the empty main places. There's actually not as many as you'd expect, because lots of "empty" places actually have one or two people. Depending on what you want it for, a map of places with very low population density might make more sense. Let me know. - htonl (talk) 19:34, 31 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Please help!

Hi Honl,

Could you please advise me on what software you used to draw the heat map for the population density of KZN?

I would like to draw a map of the population density of the Umkhanyakude district municipality for my final year project and none of the software available to me gives me as good a picture as yours. I am also using the 2011 census data up to small area.

Your advise would be greatly appreciated!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Student A13 (talkcontribs) 09:08, 2 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Well, I drew those maps with some custom software that I wrote myself, which I can't really share because it requires hand-editing the code to produce a particular map. That being said, for your purposes you could use QGis. I managed to produce this map of Umkhanyakude in QGis. Actually, if that map is what you're looking for you're welcome to use it in your project. - htonl (talk) 11:09, 2 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

South Africa Language Maps Data

Hi Htonl,

Your South Africa language maps are fantastic! I'm trying to find the original source data you used for them (specifically the Afrikaans proportion map) and not having much luck. I see the data broken down by province on page 23 of the 2011 census brief PDF, but you seem to have data at the ward level and I can't find anything like that. I was wondering if you might be able to share a link to the source for that data.

Thanks! Dheidelberger (talk) 16:56, 14 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately the more detailed data is not available on the Internet; you have to order it on DVD from StatsSA. I have a copy; if you have some particular requests I'd be happy to extract the data for you. For example, the stats on first language by ward can be downloaded here. - htonl (talk) 13:46, 15 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yes I second that the map is great. Well done on your work. I have two suggestions: 1.) a map showing afrikaans+english (together as one statistic) concentrations and 2.) a dominant language map/s based on historic data (or if not a full map at least check if there would be any major difference to the 2011 map). Request concerning the article on Berg wind

Hi Htonl. I'm not sure whether you are the person I should be addressing this request to. I have just finished turning the stub on the Berg winds into a proper article. But that has meant that the article is as much about "coastal lows" in South Africa as it is about "Berg winds" (which form part of the coastal lows). Would you be able to make the Wikipedia search engine recognize

Coastal Low

coastal low

Coastal low

COASTAL LOW

coastal Low

and redirect that enquiry to "Berg wind" please. Many thanks. Cruithne9 (talk) 06:12, 5 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

I've made Coastal low and Coastal Low redirects to Berg wind. For more info about how to do that, see Help:Redirect. - htonl (talk) 11:41, 5 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Very many thanks. I'll try to make sense of the Help:Redirect page, when I have a moment. Cruithne9 (talk) 14:51, 5 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Constitutional Court of South Africa, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Supreme Court of Appeal. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Your country needs you

Hi Htonl, I've just setup a style guide for anything South Africa government related. I understand your restrictions, but you a lot of articles under the Category:South African legislation. Would you be interested in writing the style guides for future editors? It would focus on Acts specifically. The idea is to get more standardisation across these government articles. The guide is structured in the same way as the article layout, you can have a look at the one I started for cabinets.

Lastly, if you're keen and it doesn't affect your restrictions, you might wanna help get the WP:POLITICSZA task force off the ground. At the moment, it's only me - but trying to collect all the editors interested in South African politics.

I'm definitely interested in getting involved with this. Obviously my employment situation means that I can't edit articles that deal with current parties, politicians or party-political issues. But I'm definitely interested in working on things like acts of parliament, cabinet membership, election results and so on. I'll take a look around the framework you've set up. - htonl (talk) 04:10, 19 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Great Htonl! I'm also in the process of getting copies of the yearbooks from the national archive and hopefully can share them on wikipedia (if it's allowed), so we can start getting more accurate information on previous cabinet membership etc. - That Video Shop Guy (talk) 14:19, 19 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
