Edits to General of the branch

edit

Hubon, thank you for your edits at General of the branch. I note the considerate way in which you attempted to compromise with the edits made by 94.221.58.73. I've undone them and put the article back to the way it was - not because I disagree with your edit, but because 94.221.58.73 is apparently a sock puppet of a banned user. If you think your edit was actually better than the original, feel free to revert me. Thanks for listening! Shem (talk) 20:44, 26 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Rank icons

edit

G'day, please don't go around adding rank icons to infoboxes. There just isn't a consensus to put them in all articles, I've taken Artur Phleps and generals of different armies to FA and no-one has ever suggested it was necessary. And these are articles reviewed by experienced Milhist editors. My personal preference is country/allegiance and service branches only, others have different views. And don't revert someone who reverts you, follow WP:BRD and start a talk thread about whatever it is that you have been reverted about. Thanks, and enjoy WP. Car logos

edit

Hello. All of the aforementioned are in fact free images due to being simple designs that are not original enough to warrant copyright protection (compare with the elaborate design of the Porche logo). Check the licensing at: File:BMW.svg, File:Volkswagen logo 2012.svg, File:Audi logo detail.svg. The non-free content policy and guideline are one of the most strictly enforced rules on Wikipedia, because of their legal implications. Please remove File:Porsche logotype.png from the template. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 19:44, 21 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for writing. On the file page, I read in Non-free media information and use rationale for Porsche: "Low resolution? Yes. Purpose of use: Main infobox". So it is in a low resolution. And, if it can be used in the infobox, why can't it then be used in the template, too?--Hubon (talk) 19:53, 21 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Because WP:NFCC#9 restricts the use of non-free files to article namespace. This means that all other namespaces, like userpages and the template namespace, are off-limits. There are tools to track down the usage of non-free files in inappropriate namespaces, and they will get removed. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 20:19, 21 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ok. But then, again, what about the other templates?--Hubon (talk) 09:30, 22 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
The Audi, BMW and VW logos are fine, even in templates, because they are not non-free images. They are too simple to be considered original works worthy of copyright protection. While they are trademarks, that does not figure into restrictions in Wikipedia's non-free content policy, nor is there a legal problem in using them that way. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 09:36, 22 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Finnusertop: and Hubon; I've updated the licensing of the Porsche logo crest making it a free license and also public domain image. This discussion on Commons is informative, and shows why this crest is under a free license/public domain. With the updated licensing, I've restored the image to {{Porsche vehicles}}. --Hammersoft (talk) 15:30, 22 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much! Do you maybe also have an idea for Template:Volkswagen?--Hubon (talk) 18:06, 22 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
File:Volkswagen logo 2012.svg? --Hammersoft (talk) 19:02, 22 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'd be perfectly fine with that.--Hubon (talk) 11:19, 23 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Well then have at it :) --Hammersoft (talk) 13:04, 23 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Done. It's been removed by BilCat before.--Hubon (talk) 18:52, 23 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Template:Volkswagen Passenger Cars, which Template:Volkswagen redirects to, has no logo, which I didn't remove. I did remove the VW brand logo from Template:Volkswagen Group, as that is a corporate navbox. Hubon removed the corporate logo, File:Volkswagen Group.svg, which I have since restored. - BilCat (talk) 19:16, 23 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Your help desk questions

edit

You didn't get a response, but you were asking about sizes of insignias in navigation templates. I'm not clear on what's going on.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 21:30, 12 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Oh, thank you very much for writing! Yes, my question was indeed about how to chose the formats for flags in the template section of [important] articles like Schutzstaffel.--Hubon (talk) 22:15, 12 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Anyway, I don't know how to answer. I thought you might want to try again.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 14:12, 13 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your kind interest and solidarity! I've just given it another try – let's see what happens... Best--Hubon (talk) 22:42, 30 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Once again. you didn't get a response. I went to Phabricator and have no idea what to do. At least I am registered there if I ever want to do anything.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 21:04, 13 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks for your loyalty and interest! And once more, I just gave it another try – let's wait and hope then... Greetings--Hubon (talk) 00:51, 14 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I don't understand

edit

You left me a message on my talk page but I don't really understand what you're asking.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 19:02, 16 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. What exactly don't you understand? I recently opened this thread about 1Lib1Ref, and I saw the section about The Wikipedia Library with the bullet point 1lib1ref 2017 on your talk, so I thought you might be interested in the issue of my post. Hope that helps. Best--Hubon (talk) 19:37, 16 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I should really unsubscribe because I don't follow a lot of what is said there.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 20:51, 16 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Okay, never mind then. ;-)--Hubon (talk) 11:34, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
