editHello. This is a message to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions, such as the edit(s) you made to Jaap Marais, did not appear to be constructive and have been reverted. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with our policies and guidelines. You can find information about these at our welcome page which also provides further information about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. If you only meant to make test edits, please use your sandbox for that. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you may leave a message on my talk page. You are introducing spelling and other mistakes at a rapid rate. Please stop. Greenman (talk) 18:22, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
I see that most of your edits have the edit summary "spelling mistakes", but in fact scarcely any of them do correct spellings. Some of the edits have replaced correct spellings with incorrect ones; some have gratuitously added capitalisation to words which are not proper nouns (without changing the spellings at all); some have introduced incorrect apostrophes into plurals, not possessives or contractions; at least one has imposed a US spelling on an article on a British subject; etc etc... Please stop trying to "correct" spellings, because your attempts to do so are doing more harm than good. JBW (talk) 23:18, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
- idk how to edit rly, thats just the easies way, can you give me advice? ILuvMad (talk) 15:51, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
- Many of your edits have been reverted for introducing errors. Only suggestion I have now is to take care before making any edits, to learn what you're doing wrong by reading the edit summaries of your reversed edits, and try to improve. For example, one of your common mistakes is to use something like 1990's, which is the possessive, rather than the correct form, 1990s. Greenman (talk) 06:14, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

A couple of continuing problems
editSpelling and punctuation changes
editWikipedia does not give preference to any national variety of English over others. In some cases there is a good reason for using one national variety; for example in the article Winston Churchill it makes sense to use British English, while in the article San Fransisco it makes sense to use US English. However, when there is no such specific reason for preferring one version, it is not acceptable to change content of an article to comply with one's own preferences. In the article Glenbrook Vintage Railway, which is on a New Zealand topic, your change from "Labour" to "Labor" was not correcting a spelling mistake; it was replacing the spelling which is normal in New Zealand (and most other English speaking countries) with a spelling largely restricted to North America. That is not the only time that you have done that kind of thing. If you aren't sure about things like that then it will be better for you not to try to correct spellings. Also, don't make changes such as replacing 80s with 80's. An apostrophe should be used to indicate a possessive form of a noun or to indicate a contraction, not to indicate a plural.
Adding links to articles
editI see that some of your edits have added links from one article to another, known as "wikilinks". Wikilinks can be very helpful, but it is a very common mistake among new editors to add too many wikilinks to articles. Generally speaking, a wikilink should be added only if it provides information which is likely to help readers of the article in which the link is placed to understand content of that article, or provide further information closely connected to content of that article. That normally means either a link to an article which explains words or expressions in the article containing the link, or a link to an article which provides background information which is necessary in order to understand content of the article containing the link. Linking to articles in other situations is not just unnecessary, it can actually be harmful, because research has established that the more irrelevant, or only slightly relevant, links there are in a page, the less likely readers are to find the ones which they might find useful. Thus, for example, nobody reading the article The Real World: Sydney is likely to need to consult the article Australia in order to understand what "Australia" means, nor does the article Australia contain any information about The Real World: Sydney, so linking the one to the other is not likely to be helpful. JBW (talk) 19:25, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
After receiving my messages above you have continued to add unnecessary links to common words into articles, to add additional copies of links which are already present in the articles in question, and to change words to US spellings, without any evident justification, and without giving any explanation. Many new editors make mistakes such as those because they don't realise they are mistakes, but continuing to do the same things after being warned about them is a different matter. Please take these warnings seriously; if you don't, then you are likely to be blocked from editing by an administrator. JBW (talk) 22:30, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
