Acoustic telegraph

Your stub article "Acoustic Telegraph" duplicated parts of a larger existing article Acoustic telegraphy and I have therefore merged them. However you explained several things much more clearly and therefore I copied your explanations about multiplexing, telegrapher, Morse key, etc almost word for word, into the earlier article.

You also contributed to the article on Phillip Reis (which I have not edited) and therefore you may be interested in an idea I have long held about Reis's transmitter. Reis had witnesses that affirmed that his telephone could transmit intelligible speech. A Reis telephone from the London Science Museum was tested in 1932 and with proper adjustment it transmitted speech. This led me to infer that the Reis transmitter worked only if the contact points were dirty with specks of coal dust, which is of course, carbon. Coal dust was and is very common in cities that burned coal for heating. But any recently built replica of Reis' transmitter would have clean contacts and it would be a make-or-break device that would not transmit intelligible speech. What do you think of this idea?
