Updates to Sarah Tishkoff's page

Hi Ian!

I just wanted to start by saying thanks very much for your work with the Wiki Edu Foundation!

I also wanted to reach out because I just tried to access my sandbox with the content contributed by my students for the "Sarah Tishkoff" page, and I was redirected to the actual page instead of my sandbox. It looks like you moved the content to the page, and I wanted to say thank you for doing that! I'll be working on cleaning up the content in my sandboxes for the "Human Tooth Sharpening" and "Genu Varum" pages in the next few days. Would it be possible for you to move those sandbox pages to the actual pages once they're ready to go live? I don't want to burden you too much, so I'm also happy just to add the content to the actual page bit by bit. Either way - thanks so much for your help!

WikiMed Project Medical Student Edits

Hi Ian! There is a section in the delayed puberty section called "normal timing." I wanted to check with you if I could remove the beginning of that section. It does not have any citations, only telling the reader to check the puberty article for the sources, which I can't find anywhere. I feel like this is a big part of the section so I dont feel comfortable removing it without checking with you first. Let me know! --Poodle0011 (talk) 23:07, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Florida Institute of Technology/Developmental and Molecular Biology (Spring 2019)

Just a heads up. One of the new editors User: User:Akhatan2016 copied a large chunk of copyright text from the Lancet to their sandbox. This is not consistent with Wikipedia's copyright violation policies as, even in a sandbox, the text is visible, even though it is excluded from search engines. I have asked that it be removed but it might be prudent to put out a general advisory about copyright violation and what Wikipedia does and does not allow. Many thanks  Velella  Velella Talk   04:21, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know, Velella. Student editors are supposed to complete a training module about copyright and plagiarism, but it appears that this person hadn't done it yet.
I revdel'd the problematic revision and left them a note about it. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 04:43, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

Writing a New Article

Hi Ian,

I see that you help students who edit and write articles on Wikipedia for a class. I am currently working on authoring an article looking at Kinesics of Deception, or body language signs that indicate lying. I see you edited the article "Body Language" that talks briefly about the application of body language in law enforcement and poker. I hope to focus my article on what the explicit body language signs are and the scientific research around the accuracy of applying this study.

I would welcome any advice you have about writing an article and how to make sure mine publishes. Thank you in advance.

"Undeclared" users

Ian, are these users "yours":

  • Friederike22
  • ScientistRachel
  • Oneillkm
  • Nawagner
  • Mrt444

There are probably more but I stopped checking after I saw you and Samantha (Wiki Ed) editing one of the articles along with one of the new users. Assuming they are part of a Wiki Ed project, why haven't they identified themselves on their userpages? I've already spent at least 30 minutes on this, and it's a bit frustrating. I really didn't think they were students because the articles were unusually polished.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:50, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi Bbb23. I'm sorry for the lack of clarity - they're actually part of an edithathon that the American Physical Society organised as part of their March meeting in Boston that they asked us to help out with. You can see the details here. I believe they were inspired by the Donna Strickland affair to do something about the representation of women physicists. We don't normally work with editathons (I've never supported one before) but all told, I was impressed. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:30, 8 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, Ian.--Bbb23 (talk) 14:45, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

ENGW3307 Article Link Help

Hi Ian!

I'm a part of Prof. Musselman's science witting class this semester and I am hoping to write an article about Epizootic Shell Disease. ESD gets a single line in the disease section for American Lobster and is a link (that looks like it should bring you to a page just about ESD) that just loops you back to the top of the American Lobster page. Any thoughts about how I can break this loop and give ESD its own page?

Quick Question

Hi Ian,

Part of my edits to an article got removed due to a copyright problem. This was what the message said: "Your additions to the Preimplantation genetic diagnosis article include passages copied verbatim or nearly verbatim from a non-free source. This was detected by automatic plagiarism detection software. For copyright reasons, some of your contribution was deleted. Please review the Plagiarism and Copyright training module before proceeding further. Thanks."

However, I used a block quote and thought I cited it correctly. Is the problem the source of the quote?

Thanks.

References

Hi, in my sandbox I have added edits to an article that I have/will publish, but when I put in references they all result in a different number (even if I am citing the same article). For example in the Main climates section of my sandbox, I cited Sean Powells journal multiple times and it added a new reference number each time. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks!

Black Tom Explosion

Lead section Black Tom Island The term "Black Tom", referring to an island in the New York Harbor next to the Liberty Island, originates from the dark-skinned fishermen who inhabited the island for many years. [1] Explosion At 2:08 am the first and largest explosion took place, with the second and smaller explosion occurring around 2:40 am.[2]

Johnson Barge No. 17 was the location of one of the first major explosions, which contained 50 tons of TNT and 417 cases of detonating fuses. [3]
The detonation wave was traveling at 24,000 feet per second with enough force to lift firefighters out of their boots and into the air.[3]
On the island, the explosion destroyed more than 100 railroad cars, 13 warehouses, and leaving a 375-foot-by-175-foot crater at the source of the explosion.[2]
Although reports estimate that up to seven people where killed, this is unfactual, the total number of fatalities was five people.[2]

Investigation

Captain Franz von Rintelen, the leader of the sabotage, used time-delayed incendiary devices, or "pencil bombs", to initiate the explosion. [3]

Hi Ian,

When I'm looking at sources, a lot of the "credile" sources I'm looking into are coming from my school's online database (like EBSCO). However, when I put these in my citations, they can't be accessed unless people have a login for them. What should I do in these situations? The Hate U Give

Hi Ian. I just saw that The Hate U Give has been tagged for work in a WikiEd course. I would like to suggest that this is a poor choice for a WikiEd assignment - the article is currently GA and I am few hours of work away from having it ready, after a GOCE pass, to submit as an FAC. There stands a good chance that a newer editor looking to make substantial changes, as happens with WikiEd, will run into frustration as I act as a WP:SHEPHERD for this article or else we would run into the need for content resolution systems which they might be ill-equipped to do or disinterested as a short term editor in participating in. Could this student be guided to a different article for work? Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 15:55, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the note Barkeep49. We try to steer student editors away from GAs, but it doesn't always work. I will get in touch with the instructor, and either encourage the student to work on something else or (since it may be too late in the term) to keep their proposed additions in their sandbox. Good luck with Round 3 of the WikiCup! Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:06, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks Ian (Wiki Ed). Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 16:18, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

What responsibilities required of project supervisors?

I keep seeing situations where "student editors" are woefully unprepared and apparently completely unsupervised. I have an outstanding question to one of the edu project teachers that you might want to scan over.

First, if project supervisors/teachers aren't even logging in, how can they be lessening the load on the rest of WP editors, who are effectively doing that supervision?

Second, I see interactions like at Neuroscience of sex differences where student work is torn apart by regular editors, and very probably with good reason.

If students are just sent over like diarrheal pigeons to Wikipedia and told "leave something there", without sufficient preparation and without review, why are we encouraging this? Specifically, the lack of care by the course instructors? Can you show me evidence where course originators are demonstrating due diligence? Can you say the same for the majority? Shenme (talk) 04:47, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

I endorse this complaint about inadequate behavior of course students. In one case a student working on a mathematical subject could not even spell the word mathematics, in another the student refused to discuss his edits under WP:BRD. Xxanthippe (talk) 05:16, 1 May 2019 (UTC).
@Shenme and Xxanthippe: I'm not sure of the perfect answer here, but please ping me, User:Shalor (Wiki Ed) or User:Elysia (Wiki Ed) when you run into problems. This shouldn't happen if students are following our trainings and instructions, and yes, we want instructors to ensure that the students are doing what we say they should. Good instructors get amazing work out of their students with very little need for intervention, but there's a learning curve for all of them. Regardless, it's our responsibility (me, Shalor and Elysia) to clean up after them when things don't go as they should. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:57, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Feedback on Spring 2019 Project

Hi, Ian!

I'm one of the students participating in the UW Knowledge Management course this spring. I would appreciate your feedback on the Wiki article and UNESCO article I selected for the project. I selected the UNESCO article Youth and Violent Extremism on Social Media: Mapping the Research from our choices and selected the Wiki article Radicalization for editing. Some ideas I have for editing that page are: adding the UNESCO conversation about the definition/lack of definition for radicalization under the Definition section as well as adding information about the impact of the Internet and social media on radicalization under the Varieties and commonalities section. Does that seem appropriate? I'm worried those edits don't really mesh with the needs of the Wiki article for Radicalization and I would like to make sure I'm making a positive contribution. Thank you for your thoughts! Best Vchurchill (talk) 03:58, 6 May 2019 (UTC)

I need help with publishing my article for Aku Kadogo. I thought I had migrated the article successfully from my sandbox, but when I go to the article page, it says "This is a user sandbox of Aku Kadogo." I am not sure what I did wrong, but my work is not considered an encyclopedia article yet. If you think the article is fitting for publication, would you mind helping me migrate it successfully?

Thank you very much!

Hi Ian, My wikipage about Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg by Gail Carson Levine got deleted. However I am not sure what was wrong with it. As far as I knew I did everything right. Mia Thomas — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ironmanrox42 (talkcontribs)

A question on references

Good evening, I just saw your edits to Megagametogenesis and wanted to follow up. Lately I'm seeing an increasing number of Wiki Ed/student edits where references are being used in the way they were on that article, i.e. "[[Special:MyPage/sandbox#cite%20note-1|[1]]]". If you look at my recent contributions you will see that I've been removing it a lot, in some cases it's dozens of times across an article, it's also a large chunk of the pages that crop up on Wikipedia:Database reports/Articles containing links to the user space. Is it possible that there is something in the Wiki Ed training process that is leading students to believe they are following the correct process?--Jac16888 Talk 20:30, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

@Jac16888: - it's a visual editor thing. When you copy wikicode it's obvious that you need to click "edit" first, and fairly obvious when you get it wrong. With the visual editor, the end product looks more of less right. We've adjusted our training material for students to try to get the point across, but it didn't occur to me that we could be using reports like those to monitor when it happens. Let me talk to Sage and see if there's any way we can tap into that report to help us identify when student editors do that. Thanks for note. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:55, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
Thanks Ian, that makes sense and hopefully it will start to happen less going forward.--Jac16888 Talk 21:33, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
I'm a little disappointed to see that's based on monthly database dumps, so it's less useful than I thought it would be. Hopefully there's a way around this, but at least knowing that report exists is a starting point. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:37, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi Ian. I understand what the course instructor is trying to do here, and think it’s great that they are being this proactive in trying to help and encourage their students; however, I also think they might unintentionally be leading the student to believe that the student has some kind of ownership claim over the existing Wikipedia article and that the student’s grade is somehow going to matter to other editors or Wikipedia when it comes to article content. If the student is actually going to be graded on their sandbox, then perhaps it would be best for them to not make any changes to the existing article until after they’ve received their grade. Maybe the course instructor and student don’t fully realize that anything added to the mainspace is fair game for anyone to edit at anytime. Once the student’s been graded, they can incorporate the changes into the article and see how others respond. My concern is that if the student doesn’t wait, they may be more concerned about their grade and tempted to preserve their version of the article as the status quo until they’ve been graded. Marchjuly (talk) 21:19, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
Since they haven't yet edited in mainspace, my guess is that the comments apply only to the sandbox. Honestly I'm thrilled that the instructor is giving such detailed feedback on-wiki, and that they have made the effort to understand Wikipedia articles, and it's something I'd love more instructors to do. But I get your concerns, because it's impossible to know how people actually read feedback. I will pass your concerns on to them. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:49, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look. Sometimes an early morning post can sound more critical than it was intended to be. I feel the same way about the intructor trying to help their students out; in fact, I think this might have been the first time I've come across an instructor who seems really willing to do such a thing. Most of the times, the students are seemingly just left to fend for themselves for better or worse.
Anyway, my main concern is that the student has copied-and-pasted an existing article into their sandbox to try and improve it. Then, once they have done all they set out to do, they will then just copy-and-paste the entire sandbox back into the article. The first part can be problematic per WP:RUU, but this can be fairly easily fixed by providing attribution. The second part, however, might be more tricky to pull-off since it might unintentionally undo actual edits (like this) made to the article by others while the student was working on their sandbox. The student has already done this with an edit like this (though they did self-revert a few minutes later) and the instructor seems to be encouraging the student to do more of the same per this post. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:10, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

need help request, article being extended

  • Nanobright (talk) 06:19, 12 May 2019 (UTC) Hi Ian, The WiR project reached out to me on twitter to see if I would improve the bio of Adriana Briscoe before mid-next week. Wondering if you might be able to assist with checking my new version esp on the science...I believe they asked me b/c of the optics of the opsins + wing coloration which I'm fine with working on but would like to check with you whether I'm conveying the evolutionary biology + ecology concepts (and emphasis) correctly. My preliminary edits are live and will be done w/final additions during my next editing stretch tmr eve so article will be good for final review Monday forward. many thanks, alie
@Nanobright: looks good. I made mostly copyedits, but I did change gene replication -> duplication, because I'm pretty sure that's what it should have been. Please feel free to change that back if it's not right. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:47, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

Nanobright (talk) 17:21, 13 May 2019 (UTC) @Ian (Wiki Ed): thanks so much Ian...yes you're definitely right on that! just posted on twitter since they wanted the article live/more visible before their edit-a-thon but will try to extend a few more details on her research and try sending it along for GAN via the project.

Question

Hello,

I am having problem in uploading "File:Crack propagation curve.pdf" which I drew it by myself from scratch but adopted from an article as it is a widely-accepted experimentally observed plot. I am not sure if I have to place it under non-free content or free content. If it comes under non-free content, how can I add it on my article, as it seems to be removed from Sandbox. Any help is appreciated.

Have a good day!

Follow-up

Hi Ian,

I would like to move my sandbox information to an article which already exists. I also want to remove parts of it as the information mentioned on it is not correct. So, I request you to kindly help me in this regard.

Thanks!Sairam Pamulaparthi Venkata (talk) 20:29, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

@Sairam Pamulaparthi Venkata: - you don't need permission to do this. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:29, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Quick Question

Hello Ian,

I was working on my Sandbox to create a new Wikipedia page out of that content, and when I finished I moved it into a new Article page, but I got an alert message (described below) and my page has still the Sandbox format. Could you please give me any insight of what might be happening and how to fix it?

Message: "This template should only be used in the user namespace. This template should only be used in the user namespace. This sandbox is in the article namespace. Either move this page into your userspace, or remove the template. "

Page: Fracture of Soft Materials (It seems to be published)

Adding information to existing reference list

Hi Ian. I'm working on Online youth radicalization and one of the areas I believe I can be helpful in would be adding missing information for many of the citations. I can't find a good tutorial on editing the References in source mode, though. Is this perhaps beyond the scope of my capabilities as a beginner? Thanks! Kgrader (talk) 00:28, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

Q

Hi Ian--I'm finishing up my syllabus but I'm running into a few problems. Can I delete individual blocks from the timeline? For instance, I need to scrap "In-class presentation" in the last week. Thanks, Dr Aaij (talk) 15:40, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

FYI

Hey, Ian! User:Mh4011/sandbox looks like a multi-student project to me, just wanted to give you a heads up in case it wasn't on your radar screen. --valereee (talk) 14:55, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

Thanks! This doesn't look like a class we're working with, but I'll see if we can get in touch with the instructor and either connect them with us or the relevant group for the country they're based in. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 12:52, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
