Expanding an Article vs. Creating an Article

Hi, Ian. My name is Mike. As this is my first teaching experience with Wikipedia, I am making discoveries every day and greatly appreciate the Wikipedia support.

My class is about to complete an assignment to expand a current article. I have reviewed the material on Moving Out of Your Sandbox, but that is really for new articles. We are not creating a new article, we are simply adding a new section to an existing article. I do not want to violate protocol or misguide my students, so I am seeking some help in the hope of preventing problems.

I think that my students need to edit the original article and add a section to which they can copy their content. Am I on the right track?

What advice do you have for novice Wikipedians?

• Hi PsycTeacher. I'm one of Ian's colleagues at the Wiki Ed Foundation. Working on sandboxes for existing articles is a little tricky but it's much like you have laid out above. In many cases--such as those you're describing where the student work is confined to expanding or creating a single section--adding the content from the sandbox to the article requires the student to copy the material from the edit window (the wiki code) and insert it into the article, complete with a section heading (usually ==like this==). If the work is a bit more comprehensive like an overhaul, the process is still basically the same but you'll want to copy the entire article into the sandbox before you start working (or re-write the article from scratch). Adding a picture

Hi Ian, I'm Rachel and I'm running into some issues with adding a picture to a page that I'm currently working on. The page I'm trying to improve is Jean Kwok's. I added a picture of her a couple days ago and it was taken down already. I cited where the picture came from and gave the photographer credit. I'm wondering what I'm missing when it comes to adding a picture? What types of pictures are allowed?

Hello Ian, My name is Carley from ENG 353 at MSU, and I am currently working on Draft:A Map of Home by Randa Jarrar. One of my citations is showing up with a red warning that says something is wrong with the 'scheme'. I have clicked the help button and followed the directions to adjust this problem. However, it is still red.. I'm wondering if this is an issue, or if it will cause my citation/info to be deleted when others begin to edit or view the page. @Carleymarion: Looks like the system wants "http://" in front of the url; I fixed it for you. While it's good to fix these sorts of things if you can (after all, if you don't, someone else will have to eventually) it's not the kind of thing that gets anyone too upset. Image/Infobox Template Issues

Hello Ian,

My name is Carley Marion and I am working on the page for A Map of Home. I am having a lot of trouble trying to get my image to format correctly with the "infobox book" template. For some reason the picture is not situated correctly, and the information is getting cut off. I've tried multiple times to fix this, but I am having no luck. Do you have any suggestions or would you be able to make the proper adjustments to help me fix it?

@Carleymarion: It looks like you were trying to display the infobox inside the image, rather than the other way around. I fixed that for you. Infoboxes are generally placed at the top of the article, and can accept quite a number of parameters (though most are optional). You can see more at Template:Infobox book. How to Add a Photo

Hi Ian, I'm working on Danzy Senna's article and noticed that there are a lot of rules about adding a picture to an article. However, I've noticed that there are plenty of articles revolving around people that include a simple picture of them. How do I add one while following all of Wikipedia's guidelines?
