Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #2

Number 2, July 2, 2006

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list.

Storm of the month

Tropical Storm Alberto near peak intensity
Tropical Storm Alberto near peak intensity
Tropical Storm Alberto was the first tropical storm of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season. Forming on June 10 over the western Caribbean Sea, the system moved northwestward as a disorganized tropical depression due to dry air and wind shear. It passed to the west of Cuba, bringing heavy rainfall to Cuba and Grand Cayman. The rainfall damaged 37 homes and destroyed 3 in Havana. It strengthened over the Gulf of Mexico and became a tropical storm on June 11. The center reformed to the northeast near its deep convection, and Alberto reached a peak intensity of 70 mph (110 km/h) before weakening and hitting the Florida Panhandle on June 13. Alberto brought heavy rainfall to the southeastern United States, peaking at 7.16 inches in Raleigh, North Carolina. The rainfall in Florida was beneficial in places as it alleviated drought conditions. The storm indirectly caused two deaths: A pilot who crashed near Tampa due to poor conditions and a boy who drowned in the flooding in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Typhoon Aere

Yeah, I'd say that Aere is ready, it just needs a general copyedit, which I'll do as soon as you move the page to the article namespace. As for Dolly, I'd still hold it a little bit, as the Preparations section is extremely short, and there must be more information available, although some may be in Spanish. If you find something that you need to translate, just poke me and I'll have a look at it. Titoxd(?!?)

Re: Sandbox

Hmm, interesting. I think it could warrent a mention in your Dolly article, though the damage is not all directly from Dolly. It was moisture from the system that caused the damage, along with persistant rainfall after Dolly moved through the area. The damage shouldn't be in the infobox, but giving a summary of the rainfall event could work. --Hurricanehink (talk) 18:13, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

1957 Pacific typhoon season

I've got round to uploading the track maps for 1957 now (check the page). Della doesn't have the track map as of yet due to the dateline crossing nonsense. More seriously however is "Tropical Storm 9W". The JTWC plain didn't have such a storm, as can be seen from this JTWC page where 21 storms are listed including Della and 8 is followed by Bess. Where's the source for the existence of that storm? It looks like its a non-existent one to me, you might have to remove it...--Nilfanion (talk) 00:22, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Oh right, thats amusing. That storms existence was acknowledged by the JMA but not the JTWC. One thing I can say with certainty is that it isn't TS 9W, thats a JTWC designation and as the JTWC didn't monitor it... Bring it up on the articles talk page hopefully it will get more input.--Nilfanion (talk) 01:20, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Re:Younger Users

Thanks for your list of Wikipedians younger than I am, but to tell you about when you've said that the both of us are one of the most active young Wikipedian user, I (compared to you) isn't that much active beause you've made an over 6000 edits while in comparison, I have made barely 700 edits (as of July 2006).
