Wikipedia Help Survey

edit

Hi there, my name's Peter Coombe and I'm a Wikimedia Community Fellow working on a project to improve Wikipedia's help system. At the moment I'm trying to learn more about how people use and find the current help pages. If you could help by filling out this brief survey about your experiences, I'd be very grateful. It should take less than 10 minutes, and your responses will not be tied to your username in any way.

Thank you for your time,

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Indonesian Idol (season 2), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Queen (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Before adding a category to an article, please make sure that the subject of the article really belongs in the category that you specified according to Wikipedia's categorization guidelines. Categories must also be supported by the article's verifiable content. Categories may be removed if they are deemed incorrect for the subject matter. Thank you. Please make sure that if you add a category to an article - particularly when it comes to the subject's ethnicity or heritage - the category is supported in the article with a reliable source.  Mbinebri  talk ← 19:04, 22 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

But their surnames suggested their ethnicity. For example, Kevin Szalai and Egni Eckert. Szalai and Eckert are common surnames in Hungary and Germany respectively. So obviously there is no problem if I added categories about their heritage. IlyasVII (talk) 13:07, 25 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
As you say, surnames suggest a subject's ethnicity, in this case based on your personal knowledge, and that's not good enough to categorize based on. Per WP:EGRS, "as to the inclusion of people in an ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexuality related category, please remember that inclusion must be based on reliable sources." So if you don't have sources specifically citing a person's ethnicity, there obviously is a problem if you add related categories.  Mbinebri  talk ← 18:02, 25 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Also, please be aware of the rules regarding minor edits, which you have incorrectly labeled many of your edits as.  Mbinebri  talk ← 18:06, 25 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, sorry. Not suggest but clarify their ethnicity. And for Kristina Vogel's case, she was born in Kyrgyztan, so why did you remove Kyrgyzstani people of German descent from her categories? I believe that's because you didn't read her biography before editing her categories. IlyasVII (talk) 04:08, 26 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
I don't pretend to be perfect, so feel free to check all my edits. "Suggest" is the better word here, but you can pick any word you want - it doesn't change that we need reliable sources to assert someone's ethnicity.  Mbinebri  talk ← 22:41, 27 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. 1917 Jakarta gubernatorial election

edit

Hi. Unfortunately you cannot sort pages out in that way, by just cutting and pasting content from one to the other. Doing this loses the edit history of all the contributions to the article. You need to get the page you want removed deleted, then rename the existing one. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 19:45, 17 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

See WP:SPLICE for info on this. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 19:46, 17 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:American Samoan people of German descent

edit

A tag has been placed on Category:American Samoan people of German descent requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
