- Wiki-adoption is a program designed to help new and inexperienced users. More experienced editors can "adopt" newer users, helping to mentor them along the way as they learn about Wikipedia. To get adopted just edit your user page and add {{adoptme}}. To adopt someone else place {{Adopting}} on your user page. Gman124 talk 20:20, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

User Page
editHi, I changed the template that was there (the one that said ur seeking adoption) to a template that says you have been offered adoption because the original template adds you to a cetegory that we use to find new adoptees who havnt been given offers yet, where as you has recieved an offer. Adoption
editHi, Its done, below is your adoption subpage, it contains all the conversations so far on the one page. When we discuss thingsthe idea is that you do it on that page. you can edit that page by clicking the "Edit this subpage" link. I have listed you as an adoptee of me, I look forward to working with you. «l| Ψrom3th3ăn ™|l» (talk) 02:12, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

editDepending on what you seek from adoption, would you like me to adopt you. - As per your response before the 'pet dog' comments...I'm basically looking for someone to help me get rolling on basic editing, maybe some templates and such, get a user page up, and then just random questions I have along the way. I was hoping to find someone who's active in the History section of things, but apparently that seems to be a rarity among adopters (maybe I'll be the first? lol) Anyways...if you're up for I'm game. The reason I wasn't all gung-ho about the chubbinator is mainly because I don't communicate well with people who could potentially be my offspring(based on their age of course, Ive never met his mother...promise)Infero Veritas (talk) 14:56, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

- Simple put, I'm slightly less than 25% of the way to my current life expectancy. (23) Ok...so maybe I can't have children at 10 years old...but the point was made. I read over your stuff for adoptees, looks like I could learn a good deal from them. So if you're up for it, I'm up for being adopted. I'm not gonna be a "one week wonder" as you put it...though I will forwarn you that I do own my own business, and as such there are times when that must take precedence over being on wiki. However, as I'm currently stuck in cleveland for my job (outside of my company) I have quite of bit of time for wiki this week:)Infero Veritas (talk) 17:30, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Alrighty, so what's the first step? Am I just going through the courses you set up and letting you know what I'm doing/editing? Two other questions for ya: Is there a template of sorts for a user page that I can use? and how do you create the subpages?
Regarding the deletion course: I was looking through pages and found The World Cafe. I noticed the template at the top was placed nearly two years ago, and it definatly is blatant advertising. Should I use the {{db-ad}} template? and do I remove the current template?--Infero Veritas (talk) 14:02, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, In short its best to start from the top because the courses down the bottom use knowlege from the courses at the top. If there are assignments or questions in the lessons just put them here with an appropriate header. If you want your userpage designed talk to User:RyRy as he likes making userpages for people. Subpages are very easy, EG, when on your user page just add /subpagename to the end of the URL and create the page. To make it appear in another page (like this page is doing}} go to the page you want to make it appear in (transclude) and add {{User:Infero Veritas/subpagename}}. To link to a subpage you would put [[User:Infero Veritas/subpagename|Link text]]. The page you mentioned does look quite promotional, however I dont think it would qualify for WP:CSD because it has been around for some time, usually CSD articles are tagged within a month of creation, perhaps you can nominate it for deletion at Wikipedia:AFD «l| Ψrom3th3ăn ™|l» (talk) 14:52, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Cleanup Patrol Assignment
editI'm working on the first one and ran into a few questions after editing a few pages.
1: What is the proper proceedure for an article which was tagged over 2 years ago, has had changes made, doesn't have any discussion, and appears to comply with most everything as far as general cleanup?
- For example:A page that's spelled/grammatically correct, but has no sources
2: What is the criteria for removing a cleanup tag? Some articles I looked at didn't appear to have anything that needed changed. Others may only need one things adjusted, but there is a better tag that could be applied to be more specific.
I think I asked those in a way that makes sense, if not just tell me to clarify. --Infero Veritas (talk) 17:17, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
- Mighta missed these ^, my fault for adding the huge section below though.
- 1) Re tag that page with no-sources teamplate 2) If its been cleaned up since the tag was added it can be removed «l| Ψrom3th3ăn ™|l» (talk) 07:43, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
User Permissions Assignment
editWhat is a permission? A certain right or ability given to a trusted user based on specific criteria and/or community discussion and approval. User:Prom3th3an/correct
What pages are un-registered users able to edit? All non protected/semi-protected pages.User:Prom3th3an/semicorrect - Anon users can only edit non-protected pages.
What is an auto confirmed account? On English Wiki it is an account which is more than 4 days old, and has more than 10 edits. (Varies according to circumstances) User:Prom3th3an/correct

Who can grant rollback? Administrators and Stewards User:Prom3th3an/semicorrect - Beaurocrat
What does rollback enable you to do? Revert multiple edits made by a specific person at one time User:Prom3th3an/correct
What should you not use rollback for? When in doubt, don't. User:Prom3th3an/semicorrect A little more specific would be nice :)
What are administrators able to do? Edit the main page and protected pages, set/unset protection for pages, delete/undelete pages and their histories, block/unblock IP's and/or accounts, Revert pages quickly, Move pages protected agianst moving, Move up to 100 subpages with a page, View pages vulnerable to vandalism, View history of deleted pages, Create accounts with similar names to existing accounts, Grant/Remove rollback rights, Block exemption, Grant account creator permissions. User:Prom3th3an/correct

What type of a user must you be to be granted oversight? CheckUser or current/former Arbitrators. Though the process is not set in stone. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Infero Veritas (talk • contribs) 18:00, 7 August 2008 (UTC) User:Prom3th3an/semicorrect - Although there is no procedure set in stone, there are certain expcetations by the community.
Question for ya
editSo here's something I've run into a lil bit recently. I goto a page I want to make edits to, and I notice that in the past (usually a year or two ago) people were discussing the page a whole bunch, but nothing has been said in awhile. So before I make a major edit to the page, do I really need to post anything on there requesting people's input? Or how should I go about that?Infero Veritas (talk) 20:40, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Amway/Quixtar
editNot much new that I'm aware of, though I haven't been paying much attention either. The main thing is that Alticor announced that it is renaming Quixtar back to Amway. There is a proposal to merge the articles, which I'm concerned may be inappropriate because the underlying company may be essentialy the same, and because information may be lost. However the matter is still being discussed. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 00:46, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Nutrilite
editI don't necessarily see a need for more references, though this is always good. Rather, the references currently on the page leave something to be desired. Since the general WP policy is to avoid sourcing things such as press releases from the company in question as much as possible, it seems the article would benefit greatly if non-corporate newspapers and other reliable third-party sources are used to source the material. Currently, there are only two such sources used in the article (that of the Hindu Business Line and the NSF link that doesn't work anymore) and the rest are corporate sources related to Nutrilite. If the subject is notable, then there must be plenty of reference material we can use other than that which is directly related to the subject in question. My thoughts primarily revolved around resolving any potential or perceived conflict of interest in the source material (e.g. all companies want to sell their brands and products and the companies related to Nutrilite have this same necessarily biased interest). Thanks again. --Xaliqen (talk) 02:09, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
Buffalo Sabres draft picks
editNot a problem. Many users create personal subpages (i.e.: I have several, with User:Resolute/Sandbox for works in progress). Creating a subpage is pretty simple, and details can be found at Wikipedia:Subpages. From there, you can copy the Sabres article into your subpage and work on it at your leisure, copying the result back into the main article when finished. Cheers, Resolute 20:47, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
- List looks pretty good. Two things I noticed immediately - first, Wikipedia's accessability guidelines discourage colour coding as the only means of highlighting a row, since colours are not visible to disabled users of the site. Generally, we mark such entries with symbols (i.e.: †, ‡, *, etc.) in addition to shading the cells. Second, you seem to have an additional empty column at the end. I'll try to figure out how to remove that for you if I have time. Otherwise, looks great.
- As far as uploading an image goes, the first step is to ensure that you own the copyright on it. If it is a picture you downloaded off the net, Wikipedia probably can't use it. If it is your own image however, and you are willing to license it on a "free" license, uploading is fairly simple. You will see an "Upload file" link at the bottom left of the menu under Toolbox. From there, you can follow the steps to upload the image. Regards, Resolute 17:04, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
- The photos on the side were either user created (i.e.: I have taken pictures of several Flames players and uploaded them, thus I own the copyright and have agreed to licence them), or were found elsewhere (i.e.: flickr) where they were marked as carrying a compatible license for use on Wikipedia. In the case of Flickr, there are a ton of images carring Creative Commons licences that are considered free use: CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, etc. So the important consideration for images found on the internet is that they are explicitly stated as carrying such a license. Resolute 18:54, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
- I would tend to agree with the number of colours being overkill. Though my personal inclinations lean towards simple is better. One thing you can do with the important personal facts, such as drafted players that went on to hall of fame careers, is to state that in prose rather than a highlight on the chart. Resolute 15:38, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
Re:Please Note
editI apologize for the this tardy reply - I have been really busy in real life, and have not had much time to do things on Wikipedia. Do not worry about the slip-up on the Madden talk page, it happens to all of us. Pertaining to your Favre/Levens inquiry on my talk page, I made my case in the "Madden Curse Deleted..." section, which is basically a reiteration of the the original decision to move and consolidate the Madden Curse article (See [1]). I am sorry that I am being very brief, but I am also (unfortunately) rather busy with other things right now. -- StarScream1007 ►Talk 00:52, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
Templates
editMost of our infobox templates should be in Category:Ice hockey infobox templates. I'm not sure we have one that is set for both colours and collapsable history, though in theory, anything can be modified. Since we do aim for some degree of consistency, I would suggest using the same infobox as you would find for other teams in the same league as the article you are working on. Cheers, Resolute 15:14, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
Otters / Sabres
editSure, I'll take a look at them. Probably sometime tomorrow. --D.B.talk•contribs 04:19, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
- As promised, some comments about the Buffalo Sabres draft picks. Are the colors highlighting the players who were NHL all-stars or Stanley Cup winners really needed? Symbols are also used to note same things (seems redundant, plus the colors are very similar to each other and are hard to tell apart). Also, "Nationality" in the table header doesn't need to be abbrievated, it'll fit on one line. Other than those and a few links like "NHL" that are redirects, it looks rather good. Now on to the Otters... --D.B.talk•contribs 04:13, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Sabres Draft Picks List
editIt never became an FL. A consensus was not reached. The reviewers made me make a bunch of changes I didn't agree with, like taking out all the players who never played in the NHL and moving the page from List of Buffalo Sabres draft picks (where I originally had it) to Buffalo Sabres draft history. Obviously, both of those changes they forced me, kicking and screaming, to make have since been changed back. Nice. Anyway, I got frustrated with the process and never finished going through with the FL process. Good work on updating the page. Let me know if you want any more help with such articles; I don't spend very much time here any more, but I do still like to help out if I'm needed. Skudrafan1 (talk) 01:28, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Colt Station
editWas pleasantly surprised to see the start of a Colt Station article. Although, I am a little concerned about the image of being not having a free license (I recall seeing that image somwhere else). A list of the sources won't be bad either (more for me so I can go look at them and see if I can add anything else to the article from them). I'll be more nitpicky later when the article becomes more complete, but so far the articles is a good start. --D.B.talk•contribs 17:00, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
- You wouldn't happen to have higher res version, would you? Sorry if I was seeming skeptical, but I've seen good photos turn out to be copied from elsewhere on internet and have to be deleted. Most recently having been this incident. --D.B.talk•contribs 18:15, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
- I'm thinking anything over 1000px. The photo can be scaled down automatically in the article while still retaining a large resolution if someone wants it. The geobox the image is in uses the
|image_size=
parameter to specify the size, but defaults, I think, to 300px if left blank, so the size of a high res photo is usually never a problem. Also, higher res photos are harder find on the internet and are less likely to have their source challenged. --D.B.talk•contribs 18:48, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Userboxes
editI noticed your userboxes at User:Infero Veritas/Boxii and User:Infero Veritas/UserBoxii use userboxes from a number of other subpages; many of these userboxes are using non-free images. Per the policy Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria #9: "Non-free content is allowed only in articles".
You need to remove these images from your userboxes. Please let me know if you have questions on this. Scouting userboxes using free images are listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting/Userboxes. YIS --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 16:05, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- My understanding of the images pertaining to the boy scouts of america is that they are all free for use as long as they adhere to the standards of the program. If there is another way they should be marked as far as copyrights go I'd be glad to change it Infero Veritas (talk) 18:20, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- The issue is with Wikipedia policies, not those of the BSA. These are not free images, so they fall under the policy of non-free content criteria. The Scouting project got dinged on this years ago and we spent quite some time cleaning userboxes and creating free images. I know your boxes are not in project space, but they are a problem regardless. If you want a second opinion, you can ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 19:49, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- Well pardon my bluntness...but instead of telling me to delete them and getting all worked up over it, how about instructing me on how to properly tag them as free images? Infero Veritas (talk) 16:08, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
- You can't tag these as free images and you can't use them on you user pages. The logos are copyrighted or trademarked by the BSA, thus are non-free. Wikipedia policies place certain restrictions on the use of non-free images; one is that they cannot be use on user pages. You can not use the Eagle Scout badge and neither can I. This is why we created alternate logos and released them as public domain. For example: File:BSA Eagle knot.svg is what we use for Eagle Scout as we were advised that a knot cannot be copyrighted, but we should not use the exact BSA emblem. I know it is not as esthetically pleasing, but it is policy. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if I don't do it, someone else will eventually notice and simply delete the images in question. I was hoping it would be less stressful if I put the policies in front of you and let you do it yourself. Again, if you want another opinion, you can ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 17:27, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
- Well as I heartily disagree that the image are non-free, go ahead and delete them. It would be like saying I can't wear the badge on my uniform because it's copyrighted by BSA. BSA has clearly given permission to use their images, I use them in publications all the time. You need to be a little less Dr. Cranky Pants, and a little more understanding that words on a page mean nothing to me and that you aren't going to upset me by typing things here. If you don't like them, delete em. You've still failed to answer my question though (which makes me wonder as to your intentions) as to how to place FREE images on here. Criticism is fine, but if you offer no help, then you're just being ignorant. :) Don't worry though, I still love you! Infero Veritas (talk) 12:45, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- I could have deleted the images outright and left you a templated note. Instead, I have tried to guide you towards discovering the policies and guidelines of Wikipedia. The uniform claim is rather disingenuous: the BSA specifically allows members to wear the uniform, insignia and badges (although the badges and insignia remain the property of the BSA).[2] As to free images: the images of the BSA badges and insignia are protected by patent, trademark and federal charter; this was recently reaffirmed in Wrenn v. Boy Scouts of America; a case that challenged certain BSA trademarks including Eagle Scout. These images are not free and cannot be used as you desire; this is exactly why the project developed free images for use in userboxes. There is no way to make the Eagle Scout badge a free image, no matter how hard you want it. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 13:19, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
