Regarding your decision not to move the article:

“ This looks like the name predominately used by tertiary sources in English. He wasn't really 'Persian', and mostly wrote in Arabic (cf. Frédéric Chopin and Joseph Conrad), so I'm not seeing any kind of case for changing the article's name. ”

• He self-identified as Persian in his writing (in his The Remaining Signs of Past Centuries). Even granted that he was not a "Persian", in his native Chorasmian (a close relative of Persian) his name is still "Biruni" NOT "al-Biruni". The term itself is Persian. Even if you disagree with a move, his native name must be included in the lede, currently there is none.

• The next point has no bearing on his name. Otherwise we must move Isaac Newton to Isaacus Newtonus and Carl Friedrich Gauss to Carolus Fridericus Gauss, since they mostly published in Latin.

Encyclopaedia Iranica (Yarshater 1982— ) uses Biruni, and it is the most exhaustive source in English dealing with Iranian languages, history, and cultures, past and present. Grinevitski (talk) 00:55, 15 August 2015 (UTC)
