An update from adopt a user
Hi there Intelati! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.
On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.
Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.
Once again, thank you for participating in the adopt-a-user program! If you wish to respond to this post, please message me on my talk page.

Question
If a vandal has already been blocked once in the month and they vandalize after the block is up to give them an only warning? --Inka888ContribsTalk 00:59, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker)In this month? Anon or registerd? If an anon, generally I start the cycle again as the IP may be being used by someone else. If not an anon, I look to see what their other contributions are. If it appears a vandalism only account (that's their only edits), then I Level 4 them, and AIV them as a "Vandalism only" account. Otherwise, I generally weigh multiple factors such as: (1) time from unblock to vandalism, (2) any constructive edits since unblock, (3) any constructive edits, (4) any previous blocks, and (5) vandalism to constructive ratio. I also look at the severity of the vandalism. Unsourced, POV, etc, I generally go with a level 1 or 2 to start. Blatant (page blanking, random characters, BLP violations, attacks, and so on) I treat more harshly after weighing in my five criteria above. Sometimes an AIV, sometimes a final warning, sometimes a level 3. I always try to err on the safe side. Easy enough to keep an eye on them and issue more warnings until it's raised to block level. Best, Rob ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 01:58, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

- (S)He's likely a normal user using the Huggle tool. Sellyminime (talk) 23:58, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Did you read my explanation though? Apparently "Ceemow" doesn't exist anymore (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Ceemow&action=edit&redlink=1). The guy also did insinuate James O'Keefe was a rapist. That would seem to justify removal in accordance with the same rules you just provided, non? Not a huge deal to me whether it stays or goes though. SpecialKCL66 (talk) 00:22, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Then why does his user page now say:
- "Wikipedia does not have a user page with this exact title. In general, this page should be created and edited by User:Ceemow.
- To start a page called User:Ceemow, type in the box below. When you are done, preview the page to check for errors and then save it." SpecialKCL66 (talk) 05:20, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Also, this igloo business...that sounds pretty wild. Does it only apply to vandalism, and does it correct things automatically on pages you monitor or something like that? I still can't figure out how to monitor a page. I think I once selected the option to monitor the O'Keefe page, but I don't get any kinds of alerts or anything when it is changed.

It is most certainly not a hoax!! - the book was months/years of hard work! See my explanation on the candidate for deletion page for the article. Also look up the article "Marilyn (hill)", the article "Hardy (hill)" is an exact parallel of the background to this article, so either both stand or both fall!! Hello Intelati,
I don't know whether I have found the correct place to talk to you, however there is a flag on my site that is suggesting a merger with the other site.
I certainly do not have a problem with that. I do not know the person whom has done the other article and I would be interested to know as to whether he was local or not. (I am local and travel to Milford Sound daily as a Coach Driver). I have a lot of material, photos etc to add to my site as I wasn’t finished, when I sighted the other one. I guess I can just continue.
The other site has some very good material which has balance and which I would welcome on my site. Could you put me in contact with this person ? My E-mail is <merv@teanau.co.nz>. Thanking you.

Hi Intelati - I've done the merge of the Haast-Hollyford road articles, but the new article probably still needs quite a bit of tidying. Have a look and see what you think. Grutness...wha? 05:34, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, you're probably right about that section. It's the problem of trying to merge two articles, one of them, though fairly NPOV, was written by a local environmentalist, and the other (which made no attempt to be NPOV!) which was written by someone who clearly supports the building of the road! There are bound to be some POV issues which need work. Other than that, though, hopefully the new article makes sense. Grutness...wha? 05:41, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
I actually agree that this page shouldn't exist as a standalone article. The standards were different in 2004, when I created it. Now, the accepted precedent would be to compress the page to a redirect and move any relevant information (not that there's very much to begin with) to a candidate list page. - The colors seem to have changed, though I don't remember clearly.. I remember green at the bottom, dark brown at the top..at any rate:
- Anything illegible to Explorer is thereby illegible to Carl Sagan-ish numbers of Internet users. That is patently unacceptable, if you want to be accessible to others.
- The whole "changing colors" background thing just screams "I am not yet old enough to vote in the US; I'm probably not even old enough to drive." Why pigeonhole yourself in that manner?
- for example, look at User:The Thing That Should Not Be. His user page is...well... you know... but his talk page is vanilla. That's much better...
- I suggest you simply retire the color scheme, at least for the talk page. But do what you wish. Good luck. • Ling.Nut 05:18, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

Your contributed article, Cigar band
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
Hello, I notice that you recently created a new page, Cigar band. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page - Cigars. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will to continue helping improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Cigars - you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.
If you think that the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. 22:56, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Article of the month – Alan Kulwicki, selected as a good article
Alan Dennis Kulwicki (December 14, 1954 – April 1, 1993), nicknamed "Special K" and the "Polish Prince", was an American NASCAR Winston Cup Series (now Sprint Cup Series) racecar driver. He started racing at local short tracks in Wisconsin before moving up to regional stock car touring series. Kulwicki arrived at NASCAR, the highest and most expensive level of stock car racing in the United States, with no sponsor, a limited budget, and only a racecar and a borrowed pickup truck. Despite starting with meager equipment and finances, he earned the 1986 NASCAR Rookie of the Year award over drivers racing for well-funded teams. After Kulwicki won his first race at Phoenix International Raceway, he debuted what would become his trademark "Polish Victory Lap". Kulwicki won the 1992 Winston Cup championship by what was then the closest margin in NASCAR history. He died early in 1993 in a light aircraft accident, and was unable to defend his championship. He has been inducted into numerous racing halls of fame and was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers. Kulwicki was known for being a perfectionist and doing things his own way. An engineer by trade, his scientific approach to NASCAR racing inspires the way teams are now run. Despite lucrative offers from top car owners, he insisted on driving for his own race team, AK Racing, during most of his NASCAR career. Described by his publicist as "a real hard type of person to get to know", he remained a bachelor throughout his life. John Huchra
Quote from New York Post obituary:
John Huchra, a man who loved telescopes and whose pioneering maps of a bubbly universe challenged notions of how the galaxies were born, died on Friday at his home in Lexington, Mass. He was 61.
John P. Huchra was an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
The cause was a heart attack, his wife, Rebecca M. Henderson, said.
Dr. Huchra (pronounced HUCK-rah) was an enthusiastic observer, logging as many as 130 nights a year at telescopes around the world. He was gregarious as well, bringing home students for Thanksgiving and holding a leadership role or membership in virtually every important body related to astronomy, including the American Astronomical Society, of which he had been president.
“His passing has upset more of us than I remember for any other astronomer,” said Tod Lauer, an astronomer at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tucson. Rusted AutoParts (talk) 20:23 14 October 2010 (UTC)
Further to your tagging of the DLA Piper article as being 'written like an advertisement' I would be grateful if you could explain exactly what your issues are with the article. I should state that I have NO connection with DLA Piper whatsoever and made a lot of improving edits to the page which, in my view, have made it a lot more factual, cited and neutral e.g. deleting a deal list. On reflection I am happy to make the following edits to make the page more encyclopedic:
- delete the 'Slogan'
- delete those awards and rankings which are uncited
However I am strongly opposed to the deletion of the list of offices, which is encyclopedic, factual, cited and consistent with the articles for many other law firms, including Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, Baker & McKenzie, Jones Day, Gide Loyrette Nouel, K&L Gates, Linklaters and Greenberg Traurig.Rangoon11 (talk) 16:00, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
Excuse me?
Erik has no experience on Wikipedia whatsoever, so he is not a sockpuppet of mine, and I will not ever make one. Ian (talk) 21:19, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
Account creation process
When users say being involved in the account creation process; what do they mean by that? Inka888ContribsTalk 22:30, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
- See WP:ACC and WP:ACCGUIDE for the internal details. Basically, it's a team of users that reviews account requests and creates accounts for people who are unable to do so on the regular login/create account page. However, if you are thinking of joining, I would wait, because there's very little room for mistakes, and a pretty good amount of experience onwiki is desired. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 02:41, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

Re mentoring me (AndyTheGrump)
Thanks for the offer to mentor me, but are you sure you understand what shenanigans you would likely be getting into? I've already been blocked over making a legal threat (brain not engaged while typing furiously), and been a significant factor in what probably counts as one of the more confused disputes on ANI, as should be evident from my talk page. I suspect that it would probably be easier to teach a crocodile to touch type or a walrus to knit woollen scarves than it would to tame me sufficiently well that I don't leave a trail of mayhem with my edits from time to time. I have an unfortunate tendency to figure out how things work by bending them until they break, and then observing the component parts as they fly across the room. This may work well in particle physics, but isn't necessarily good practice in social interactions. I'm also too much of an old dog to admit to wanting much help in learning new tricks, so I'd most likely ignore any advice offered out of principle...
Well, maybe not. Being serious for a minute, I appreciate the generous offer, and will think about it, and even if I decide not to take you up on this, I'll bear you in mind as a useful source of advice should I need it. Thanks again, AndyTheGrump (talk) 02:09, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Harvest (software)
Hello Intelati. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Harvest (software), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: not very spammy. Take to WP:AfD if required. Thank you. GedUK 14:20, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

AGF Aside...
I think this makes AGF difficult (in chronological order, oldest to newest, skipping a few): lower case[2], UPPER CASE[3], lower case[4], followed by a bunch of upper case talk page stuff. Neat, huh? I've been a computer tech for 24 years, and though I guess it is possible a keyboard could be so weirdly susceptible to all caps on talk pages and in comments, but not in article edits, it seems unlikely. I think I'm going to drop out of this other than if a warning is appropriate. Best, R ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 06:26, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Question
If you are reverting clear vandalism; is it considered edit warring to if you make more than three reverts of clear vandalism? Inka888 16:59, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- But... I would definitely make 100% sure it's very clear vandalism (for instance stuff that's total nonsense or large section blanking or serious BLP violations, or otherwise very obvious). I've seen people get in trouble for 3RR or edit warring for reverts other than that. So... I'd stay away from 2R even, if it's content related (ie: unsourced), POV related (even if very POV but not major BLP), etc. Best thing to do in those cases is to get others involved, and, if appropriate, get a report in on the user or ask an admin to review it.
