COI editing

edit

Hello, your account appears to be misusing Wikipedia to write promotional article(s). I noticed that the article you wrote Whisper (app) appears to have COI problems, as documented on the article talk page. Please reply with your side of the story. Thank you.   There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. The thread is Paid editing again. Thank you. De728631 (talk) 15:16, 11 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I got your message about your suspicions of a conflict of interest. What would you like to know? I have no connection with the company, and I'm not being paid to work on the article, I'm not a lawyer, I'm not a professional writer, just a nerd who wants to contribute to the encyclopedia or chose a new app as the subject of a dedicated effort. I'm aware that Wikipedia editors are meant to be anonymous, but I'm not a sock puppet, not an astroturfer, and can tell you whatever you'd like to know about me, we can chat or maybe even talk on the phone, whatever you want. I'm also a highly active contributor to Reddit (14,667 link karma, and 1,600 comment karma), if you'd like to see what I've contributed there (as some proof of my nerd credentials).

The basis for the time and effort I've bothered to spend on this article is that I've been seeing a ton of mainstream-media news coverage of the company (referenced in the article) and had checked Wikipedia a few times to see if there was an article created about them - you can see some of my visits here, from before I created the article on December 20:

http://stats.grok.se/en/201312/Whisper_%28app%29

So, finally, being a nerd with a lot of time of his hands and a longtime love of Wikipedia, I took it upon myself to try my hand at creating an article and working on it to make it as complete and thoroughly referenced by externally verifiable, notable sources as possible. I saw that other popular and heavily news-covered apps such as Snapchat, Vine, and Lulu each have extensive, detailed articles, as well as plenty others that are listed on these 5 pages of social networking services:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Social_networking_services

I wanted to do add public and consistently externally supported information about an another social-networking service and app and which had garnered a lot of attention and therefore a level of cultural relevance and significance to merit inclusion in the encyclopedia. You'll see that I support virtually every fact in the article with a reference to a mainstream, non-fringe news outlet. I've edited many articles over the years, but only ever as an unregistered user, and my IP address would change every several months, so, having resolved to create this article last month, I wanted to have account where my work could be recorded and saved. I have sought to avoid the use of any weasel words or adspeak, and, just to note, for whatever it's worth, my work on the article received me a Barnstar:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:InternetUser25#A_barnstar_for_you.21

from an editor who himself has received 12 Barnstars, and who has a strong interest in tech startups, his favorites of which are listed in his profile:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Marcus_Qwertyus

and he has also done a tremendous amount of edits:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/Marcus_Qwertyus&offset=&limit=100&target=Marcus+Qwertyus

If there are statements or details that you feel are insufficiently supported by mainstream sources (or simple logic), let's talk about them and then proceed from there! I have a lot of time and I'm happy to support my work however I can!

In the absence of any evidence from Checkuser, I have to accept your statement at face value. Regrettably, there have been a couple big paid editing scandals lately, and there's nothing to distinguish your editing pattern from those, so I felt it warranted closer inspection. Thank you for your response. Jehochman Talk 17:41, 11 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

No problem. Glad I could clarify, and thank you for your efforts as well!
