Updating Wikiproject Gastropods members list

Hi Invertzoo, I am still active, I do few articles now, but if you want me to do any article specifically then shoot. Enlil Ninlil (talk) 07:24, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Invertzoo, I am also still active. I'm just not as active as I wish I could be. Things have been busy with College. --IvanTortuga (talk) 16:38, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
Hi Invertzoo. I hope you had a good New Year and your recent presentation on gastropods went well. Needless to say I am still here. I had to take a month off to write a paper in Astrophysics so the nudibranchs had to take a back seat for a while. I plan to resume creating the final nudibranch genus and species list articles that don't exist yet soon. Best wishes Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 17:09, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
Hi Invertzoo, i have just replied to you message on my talk page (talk), in short, i would still like to be on the list as i plan to do some more editing on the Aplysioidea section --Muz (talk) 23:23, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Just a quick question

On my user talk page (talk) i have 2 barnstars, i noticed them a long time ago and i have just seen that the name on them is Daniel, i was wondering, have i been given theese by mistake because my name is actualy Scott ^^. cheers --Muz (talk) 23:52, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

About the text in those barnstars, I do apologize Scott, that was my error! I corrected them. Invertzoo (talk) 00:17, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks very mutch for changing the name and for giving them in the first place! --Muz (talk) 00:30, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Re:Just us and Jimbo

That's great! Cheers! – ClockworkSoul 20:10, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia NY

Hi Susan. We met at the NY Wiki meeting a few weeks ago (we sat together). I just registered today (a newbie) and am looking to begin developing stories. Looked at many guidance documents these past few days. Played a bit in the sandbox. It's all just brilliant. However, would like to know if any tutorials (perhaps DVD) exist to make learning more efficient. There's so much here. Any advice would be most appreciated. Al —Preceding unsigned comment added by Enviromet (talkcontribs) 21:12, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Thank you! Thank You!

Susan, your call/comments were most appreciated. Love the badge on my new userpage. Will frame that proudly (:-) and look back at it fondly in the future. I will do some more reading and experimenting and work on the subpage and get in touch when I have grouped a bunch of questions together. It won't take long...but I do appreciate your offer. Chiragra

Hello Invertzoo, yes I am a gastropod fancier, i am a researcher in Australia where I work on plant phylogeny but also inverts such as Volutidae. I am relatively new to wikipedia as you can no doubt see, please keep me in the loop about 'project gastropod'. Chiragra (talk) 07:15, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject Gastropods

Hi Invertzoo.
If you remember, I was the one who made the new limpet stub. Since you seem to be very involved with WikiProject Gastropods, could you please tell me where I could find a page of requested Gastropod articles? Thanks, The High Fin Sperm Whale 20:18, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, and tell we if it gets made. Most of the articles I write about came from requested articles. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 01:32, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks very much, I've already made one new article. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 07:27, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
One more thing, did you say on Snek01's talk page that you has pictures of Coenobita clypeatus and Megathura crenulata on Flickr? Thanks, --The High Fin Sperm Whale 23:16, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Have you uploaded them on Commons yet? --The High Fin Sperm Whale 23:49, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Could you ask Snek to upload them? I'm not even sure where they are on Flickr. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 01:38, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Stubs in limbo

I think User:Micro101 may not return. What will become of the stubs being prepared at User:Micro101/Red Sandbox, User:Micro101/Blue Sandbox and User:Micro101/Green Sandbox? Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:16, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Project Member Edits

Hi Invertzoo. As you noticed I started editing/making some articles again yesterday and will be gradually doing some more in the next few weeks. (I began by making stubs for all the remaining Glossodoris species not yet completed. I know you are of the opinion that just making stubs is not our priority, I shall be doing other things too). I noticed that you found that I had created the article Loy (gastropod) and made some improvements which is great. My question is how do you keep track of all the new additions that members make so fast? Where are you looking for this information? I think I am missing something. Without some central location to look it is difficult to stay coordinated. Thanks, :) Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 13:28, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your speedy reply Invertzoo. Great to know about the stubs. It is actually my intention to gradually add to the ones I create in time anyway so they shouldn't stay as stubs forever. If I have a picture or one is available I write more detailed articles rather than stubs. Without a picture stubs are fine, but of limited use in my opinion. Still better to have them than not if they are properly sourced and the taxonomy is correct. I am going to Bali for 2 weeks in April to dive so I will bring back with me a load more nudibranch photos if I can. Incidentally, I have found some nudibranch articles and lists (some created by Graham Bould) in which I can't actually find a record of in any modern literature. (Nothing on nudipixel, the seaslug forum or my books). So I am not sure what to do about them. I am in the process of adding genus articles for all nudibranchs, which basically requires creating a lot of the family pages as well when they are not there. I am not a taxonomist though so no doubt when I stray from what I know I will make some taxonomic mistakes. If you see an article I create it might be a good idea to check it and make sure that I have got that part correct.
Although wikipedia is a collaborative effort and is democratized, you are basically the senior editor for this project as far as I am concerned through sheer effort and experience so I look to you for leadership, hence my questions. Thanks for answering so throughly.
I had come across the AlexNewArtBot search feature, but as you say it is a couple of days behind and I only created the Loy (gastropod) article yesterday so I wondered if there was some other way that you were keeping track of article creations. Perhaps you just stumbled across Loy by chance since it isn't reflected in the search results yet?
It is good to know that you use the search bot though. I will check it myself too. Thanks again for your help and advice Invertzoo. Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 15:35, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
P.S. I understand what you mean about unreferenced species. When I went through the genus lists for Chromodoris and Glossodoris the first time I found many named species which either no longer exist or are synonyms and were sourced from inaccurate online lists that are well outofdate. It wasn't an easy task to go through and work out which ones were valid. Because this is a developing field there isn't a definitive reference yet that I can find online. The most upto date I have found is Bill Rudman's page which is excellent but it is never wise to rely just on one source... Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 15:49, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
Hi Invertzoo. Thanks for your long and detailed reply to my questions. Apologies for the delay in my reply. I went to a friend's house for the weekend who doesn't have the net. Unusual these days! Your answers were very helpful. Yes I am aware how to see a member's contributions, but it is not something that I do unless I have a reason. The AlexNewArtBot will prove very useful. If you ever want to see what pages I have created for the gastropod project head over to my user page. I have listed everything I have done on there. Oh and thanks for showing me to the "Taxonomy of the Gastropoda" list. That would prove to be very useful as I work my way through the nudibranchs. Best wishes Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 16:42, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I could use your advice about copyright violations. I removed copy/paste info from this article. The editor claims to be, and probably is, the author. He also uploaded an image of the subject. Not sure what to do. I thought I would ask you considering the whole Bould thing. Can you advise? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 14:00, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Actually, this specific case has sorted itself out. I know with photos taken from a copyrighted site, some sort of email is required, but what is the policy with text? Can it ever be cut and pasted from a copyrighted site verbatim if the author can prove it's hers/his? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 14:23, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
For copyright questions of any kind I always ask User:Moonriddengirl, who is part of WikiProject Copyright Cleanup. I only know a little about copyright, so please check with her or someone else in from that project. As you know, it is absolutely not recommended that people write biography articles about themselves or their best friends, and this article is a good example of why that is not recommended! The article has numerous problematic issues, the question of notability being the most basic of them! However, if the copyright for the text and the photo are indeed owned by the user rather than the University of Miami, and if he has actually released these things correctly (using the proper process) to WP and WM, then as far as I understand it, it is not a copyright violation to have them in the article. That is a lot of "ifs". Bearing in mind there are other multiple significant issues with this article, and that it may need to be deleted as unnotable, what I do in these cases is ask an administrator right away. I usually ask JoJan. Just now I put the notability tag on the article. That tag should attract more experienced editors to come take a look at it. Best, Invertzoo (talk) 14:33, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
Noted, and thank you. Actually, the editor is Blythe Nobleman Director of Communications University of Miami College of Engineering and the subject is James M. Tien. I ought to end my fling with patrolling new user edits. I get in a trance-like state listening to Chomsky and reverting strange edits. I'm rather cross with myself for spending half of Sunday doing that. Speaking of which, you should be in the park with a tennis ball and a puppy right now, and not on Wikipedia. Ha! Thanks again Susan for taking the time. Let's put this one to rest. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:40, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

list

Should the list for this year only List of gastropods described in the 2010 be named List of gastropods described in 2010? Am I right? --Snek01 (talk) 23:22, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Poul Lange

Reliable sources are the name of the game with BLPs, and many of the references you cite might not qualify. I don't read Danish, so I don't know how reliable the Danish sources are. There are all kinds of "Who's Who", and you would need establish that the Danish one is acceptable as a reliable source. Also, I don't know what guidelines apply for designer BLPs, so I don't know whether blogs attached to designer magazines qualify as reliable sources.

I wonder whether the awards credited to him are really notable. To look at just three of them:

  • First Place, International Photography Awards sounds impressive at face value. But each year they award first places in over sixty categories. So unless he won the overall award, it doesn't sound that impressive. Also, his name doesn't seem to appear in any of the award lists.
  • American Institute of Graphic Arts award sound good too. But if you look at the Wikipedia article, it says they make awards every year for the 50 best designed books and jackets. So, unless there is something special about the particular award he got, the notability is dubious.
  • New York Art Directors Club award - I don't know what this is, but he doesn't seem to appear on their hall of fame, nor does he show up in their archives.

It may be he is just a member of these associations, rather than the recipient of notable awards. You might find a useful source somewhere in Google books, though most of these just cite him for a cover design. Google news archives have several Danish news reports. Maybe one of those is reliable. But you would expect a notable New York designer to have at least one or two articles about him in New York newspapers of magazines. Sorry to be on a bit of a down note! --Epipelagic (talk) 00:02, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Cone snail

In my opinion, the article Cone snail should be merged with Conus, as they treat both the same genus. What do you think ? JoJan (talk) 15:27, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Poul Lange

Do you mind if I email him for some images for the article? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 16:08, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Sure, you can ask him anyway, let me know what he says. Invertzoo (talk) 02:43, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
Okay. I sent the email. We'll see. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:23, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

Authority dates

You noted the strange: "Conus aculeiformis Reeve, 1844 in 1843-65". There are many that appear similar, for instance: "Conus canonicus Hwass in Bruguière, 1792 in 1789-1816". Is this wrong? If so, let me know and I will zap them. Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:23, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Well, that extra info is not exactly "wrong"; what it is is the publication dates of all of the volumes in the series, the whole book series that the particular volume (in which the species was described) formed part of. It is however very unusual to mention it like that, the name is usually written simply as "Conus canonicus Hwass in Bruguière, 1792" or "Conus aculeiformis Reeve, 1844". However it might perhaps be worth having that info in the article itself, I don't really know. You could ask Snek and JoJan what they think. Invertzoo (talk) 13:44, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Trustworthy gastropod sites, here

Per this discussion, I would love a list of sites to avoid as sources, or even better, a few sites that I should stick to. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 14:54, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

Yes I think that is a very good idea, not only for you, but for anyone else too. Maybe once it is done it could be posted on the project page. It could also be updated over time as new good website sources appear. I think we should go ahead and do this, Snek and JoJan and I can work on it. Why don't we put it together at first on a subpage? I would include the Paleobiology Database, Malacolog, WoRMS, Nomenclator Zoologicus, and we can perhaps say a few words about each one. Invertzoo (talk) 15:10, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Good plan. I started it here and will include the above sites. We can move it when done. Thanks! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:15, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Looking great so far, and very useful. I'll gussy it up when it's done by putting it in a table. Then we can put it onto the project page, as you suggested. Lovely! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:46, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
