Wow. It's none of the regular species, as far as I can tell. It doesn't look like a mouse deer at all. It doesn't even look much like a muntjac, and it's too small to be a sambar or something (I'm not even sure if sambar live around there). Honestly, if I didn't know it was from Sumatra, I would have said that the coat looks like that of a gazelle, but gazelles don't range east of India.

Sumatra has had terrible deforestation, and so many species have gone extinct, but many new ones have also been discovered (a new muntjac species, for example, was discovered in Sumatra in 2008). My guess is that it's something unusual that modern guidebooks like mine won't have. I'm sorry I couldn't identify it for you. Orang pendek territory! How exciting! I've never even seen a clouded leopard or a rhino outside of a zoo. I just thumbed through the books again; my reference guide to the mammals of Africa suggests Eudorcas or Antidorcas, but of course that's impossible, because they don't live in Indonesia. The black sidestripe is very diagnostic; that and the black line running from its eyes down its snout suggests that it is diurnal (to deflect the sun's glare). One idea for how to learn more is to contact some mammologists, who can direct you to better sources. I'm sorry, but you can't do an entire article based on your personal knowledge. I'm sure that what you wrote is 100% true, but if we allowed "look, I swear this actually happened, I know it, trust me" as a source, that would lead to lots and lots and lots of abused.
