Welcome to wikipedia. I see you have a specific interest in diabetes, as do several of us. We have a range of quality in the current diabetes articles. Some of the smaller ones have been rewritten and are reasonably "polished"-- I see you liked my MODY article enough to plagiarize it for your website. I am currently working on a better DKA article. The big mountain is the main diabetes mellitus article, which is heavily trafficked, very uneven, and has had many minor alterations by people passing who contribute what they think is missing. Most of us think it needs a major overhaul but only have so many hours to spend.

We could probably use some articles on diabetes and school, diabetes and the Americans with Disabilities laws, diabetes and insurance issues, raising a child with diabetes that could be written by knowledgeable lay people at least at well as by diabetes doctors.

You should review our copyright and permission policies. For example, you may use material here on another website only if you (1) acknowledge that you copied it from Wikipedia and link here, and (2) you must make it clear the material can be copied by other people under the same terms.

Reciprocally, we try to eject insertion of any material here that is copyrighted elsewhere. When I saw that you had put our MODY material on your website without acknowlegement, and copied the LADA material from your site to ours, it made me wonder if the LADA material also came from a third source. If so, were you free to post it to wikipedia?

Don't be scared away, but please review the copyright issues, credit us on your Islets of Hope website or remove it, assure us that the LADA material was yours to donate here, and tell us if there are any other articles that need to be modified because of these issues. Let me know if you have any questions. alteripse 04:28, 19 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Apology and MODY Source Correction

edit

Thank you for taking the time or point out an error of omission on Islets of Hope. I apologize for not noting the source of the MODY article when our web page was developed. The web page has been corrected, identifying the article source, along with an apology for the oversight. (The source and apology are located at the top of the page so as to be easily seen by our readers.)

Our site is almost 400 web pages of diabetes information. Most of the site contains original articles; about 60 pages are either reprint articles, or contain significant outside source material. On these pages, usually at the top of the page (especially for reprints), we state this information noting the source with a direct link to the original article. (Most of these pages appear in our “Complications” and “Infertility & Adoption” sections.)

Our goal is to provide quality, accurate medical information about diabetes. This is why we used the MODY and several other articles from Wiki (we also use material from the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse) because Wiki information generally is both comprehensive and lay-person-friendly.

Your post brought a second concern of my own: IOH permits others to freely use our web information. However, it was not clearly reflected in our own disclaimer policy that we do use outside information that we are not authorized to grant permission to use. We are in process of changing the disclaimer on our front page to caution those using our information to make sure that it is in fact ours and if not, to locate the original source prior to using the information.

To address your understandable concerns about the LADA article, it is not copied from another source. Finding no LADA information on Wiki (which surprised me given the wonderful contributions to so many other facets of diabetes) I posted a brief article hoping that someone more knowledgeable on the subject would expand and polish it. LADA is often misdiagnosed as type 2 diabetes and I personally feel an in-depth article on Wiki would be a tremendous service to members of the diabetes community, especially if it were somehow cross-linked with type 2 diabetes.

On a final note, my daughter’s father is an appellate attorney and, having argued successfully in the US Supreme Court on behalf of insured person's whose rights were violated, would be more than qualified to contribute something to Wiki on diabetes education, discrimination, and health insurance laws. He has begun this for IOH and I will encourage him to consider doing so for Wikipedia as well.

Again, my apology for what I assure you was an oversight (again, thank you for bringing this to my attention). The integrity of Islets of Hope is important. The small income generated from the site goes to help others in need, not into my own pocket. Just as Wiki provides a wonderful service, putting information tools into the minds and hands of those who need answers, I try to put medications and diabetes care supplies into the hands of those who need assistance.

For this reason, if you have other suggestions, or concerns, please, do not hesitate to contact me.

Regards, Lahle Wolfe

  • Note: I owe you an apology for inadvertently posting my first message on your user page instead of your talk page. The custom here is that only the user edits her/his own user page, but that other users can post messages to the talk page. Look at a few pages and talk pages and you will get the idea. I just block moved my message and your reply here. alteripse 19:20, 28 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
