Rock Springs Massacre

edit

Hi Ive made a few comments on the talk page about three things - but really I couldnt fault. I would appreciate if you have a spare few minutes somewhen taking a look at Bill Clinton and leeting me know if you find anything that could be improved. Drop me a message when you take the article to FAC incase I miss it. Thanks. LordHarris 20:31, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I scanned over it and made a couple minor corrections. I don't have time right now to do a thorough review, but it looked pretty good. One thing that did stand out was the use of elipses in quotes. I'm not sure if that correct use or not. It just doesn't look right to me. LaraLove 05:08, 23 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hi, thanks for your reply to my comments, your answer was reasonable. I've strongly supported its FAC. Good luck and I think it should pass. LordHarris 12:17, 25 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok. Thanks for that. I created the article in without the knowledge of the different sources. I would feel safer in creating this article reliably if you and the other person were to help me, so I would thank you for all the help you could give. I dont know much about the Black Hawk War, so it is another reason for you to help me. Oh, and by the way - I saw you took your name off the DYK list, but you still continue to submit DYKs. Why have you taken yourself off? Please consider rejoining; you may be the only one, along with me and a few others, who regularly updates. The merge-to article does not exist yet because it's just been proposed, to hold several separate articles on tyrannosaur specimens. The (Discuss) link should have taken you to the WikiProject Dinosaurs discussion on the topic. J. Spencer 04:13, 30 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Anyway, I just explained myself there. I've got no problem with Sue and Jane keeping their own articles if they're robust enough, but I don't think AMNH 5027, BHI 3033, and CM 9380 fall into that category. J. Spencer 14:42, 30 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your consideration; you have a good point on the inevitability of some articles. Would you support a proposal wherein the three small articles are merged into one, summaries for Sue and Jane are added to this new article, and Sue and Jane are left to stand? J. Dutch barn pic

edit

Thank you. I went back to the house site with morning light, hoping I could take better pics than what I already had. The house pictures turned out worse (so I used the best of the earlier ones, taken in late afternoon) but I swung around from where I was standing to look at the barn and realized it was a much better angle. The sky was just perfect. I like the trees around the edges ... gives it a sort of Hudson River School feel, which is very appropriate given the region. The stones below the barn also work well, too.

I didn't realize the significance of what was in the photo until I read the Dutch barn article. I didn't realize they were so rare. And this one is in pretty good shape ... that adds to the importance of the picture, I suspect (Really, the barn should be designated a National Historic Landmark if it is indeed the only surviving one).

I just put the article up on DYK, but your comment is making me wonder if I should take it to WP:PPR in preparation for a possible Featured Picture nom. Because I think it's good, too. Daniel Case 04:55, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

The redlink... and the fact that I haven't made a "battle of" article in quite a while. Since you have been able to find sources, I might get in there and do some things too. It doesn't feel right just leaving the article up to you when I made it, and therefore left the responsibility on someone else to make it a proper article. I'll see if I can help you out. Before you take it to GA, it might need more refs and maybe a bit more content. I'll see what I can do to help you out. Cheers -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 10:14, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cool, cool. I'm right along the Cook/Lake border so I'm mainly hitting the surrounding counties. Lots of photos for now, and I'm researching and writing a few articles as well. It's been a few years since I've written something non-technical, so it's slow going there. For Commons, I'll start with recategorizing the sites that have cats since that'll be quick and easy, then move on to the rest. Thanks for the info and the help, I'm sure I'll be bugging you again. G LeTourneau 19:46, 7 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Great, thanks for the info. I have been using HAARGIS and it's great - I just wish they'd get their scanner realligned, as I've had quite a few missing 1/2 inch or so on the right margin. I'm also curious as to whether their photos are in the public domain. I think a lot of them are slides that were included with the nomination forms. I emailed them a few days ago, but kind of doubt I'll get a response... Once I have some actual content written up for my pet project (Paul Schweikher House and Studio - it's what basically got me into this) I'll definitely ask you to go over it.G LeTourneau 20:09, 7 August 2007 (UTC) Reply

GA review for Battle of Wisconsin Heights

edit

Thanks for the feedback. IMO, any article, even those such as this one that are within the context of a larger campaign, ought to be able to stand as a complete article in its own right. My intention was to provide a context for the battle, as the Prelude section originally started with Black Hawk's band fleeing from the militia. Being unfamiliar with the subject I had no framework to place the battle in, unless I was prepared to chase down the other wikilinks (to Black Hawk War etc). Ideally I think a reader should be able to get enough information from the article itself that they can decide whether or not to follow up further articles - but they should not be forced to do so by lack of important information. For example, although not a GA see the Prelude section of Battle of the Little Bighorn - like Wisconsin Heights, part of a larger campaign, but a fairly detailed background is given.

Having said that, I may have overdone it - it's not an easy subject to briefly summarise ;) I can get a second opinion if you like; as a relatively new GA reviewer I'm still learning the ropes myself. Regards, EyeSereneTALK 20:09, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

No problems at all with you improving my efforts - please go ahead! I took most of it from the other articles anyway (mainly Black Hawk War), and re-used the citations there too. I do admit that it's a potential problem where, like here, there are lots of articles on battles within a campaign, and it could lead to the Prelude sections of each articles being repetitive, but I don't really see any other way around this issue as a reader can potentially arrive at any article without reading the main one first.
You've done a great job with the subject so far. The story of the doomed native American cutlures during North American settlement has always been an area that's interested me - I suppose we Brits have a congenital soft spot for the underdog ;) I'll look forward to revisiting the article soon. Regards, EyeSereneTALK 20:43, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Black Hawk Map

edit

Thanks - it looks very nice and provides useful information and ideas. One concern I have is that the largest maps here are displayed perhaps 300 to 400 pixels wide, so a very detailed map might look very busy at that resolution. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:57, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • I thought the maps in Third Servile War (FA, on the Main Page last month) were nicely done. There are six maps- first they had one showing general locations, then an initial battle map with an inset, then three showing different stages of the war with troop movements with the same background, then a map of the end battles on a much smaller scale. Maybe there could be one background with a map of all the important locations (forts, villages, and battles marked), then maybe one or two showing Black Hawk's movements and the two groups of US armed forces pursuing him? I think it would be best to have the same background (IL and what became WI with a bit of future IA) for all the maps. Feel free to move / copy this and the talk on my page to the project talk page, if you want. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:01, 9 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re Black Hawk

edit

Thanks for the info - even better when there's a local connection to the history. I did wonder, whilst I was reviewing, if the Black Hawk helicopter had been named with the historical figure in mind. I also vaguely recall reading once about a Black Hawk lake in Sac County, Iowa - presumably 'Sac' is a variant on 'Sauk'? EyeSereneTALK 21:20, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nice to know - cheers. It's interesting how in the UK there was a trend a while back of debunking popular folk heroes (like Robin Hood, Dick Turpin etc) to uncover the 'real person', warts and all... and some historians seem to prefer to concentrate on the warts; whereas people like Black Hawk have gone the other way from villains to folk heroes. EyeSereneTALK 22:07, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think an image of a Ho-chunk warrior would be a nice addition to the piece but not in the ifobox, which should contain an image either of a depiction of the battle (which is understandably unlikely) or a photograph of the battlefield/fort today if one is possible. Hi Ivo, I think some free color images of the intact Kinzua Bridge would be great - I have scanned a few paper photos and find if I just set the resolution (dpi) as high as I can, the quality is pretty good. I have been adding {{Commonscat}} to some articles (which idea I stole from you - thanks).

I finally checked my PA Gazetteer of Streams II, which lists streams with watersheds larger than 25 square miles. In the upper Allegheny River basin in PA, the following are listed (you had also mentioned pictures of some streams in the Allegheny National Forest): Mill Creek, Allegheny Portage Creek, Potato Creek (and its Marvin Creek and Cole Creek tribs), Knapp Creek, Oswayo Creek (and its trib Honeoye Creek), Tunungwant Creek (and its E and W Branches), Willow Creek, Sugar Run, Kinzua Creek (and its tribs South Br Kinzua Creek and Chappel Fork), Conewango Creek (and tribs Akeley Run and Jackson Run), Brokenstraw Creek (and its tribs Coffee Creek, Hare Creek, Spring Creek, Little Brokenstraw Creek), East Hickory Creek, Tionensta Creek (and its tribs Twomile Run, East Branch TC, South Branch TC, Salmon Creek, Coon Creek, West Branch TC), Hemlock Creek, Pithole Creek, Oil Creek and we seem to be out of the possible Forest counties.

Hope this helps, ask if unclear, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 13:03, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I know you have done some great DYK research. I would like to be able to follow along. Is it possible to request a DYK section on your user page?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 20:19, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have found User:IvoShandor/submissions#DYKs, but it can't be current. You seem to have like 50-75 DYKs in my mind. Is User:IvoShandor/submissions#Good_articles current?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 20:26, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi again....and we are behind schedule again after the weekend so I have to self-update with something already chosen by someone else. Perhaps I should ask someone else to spam me....like you...Cable 243. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:28, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Reviewed content

edit

I am trying to figure out how to rearrange the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chicago#Reviewed_content section now that we are finding so many articles that have been WP:FA and WP:GA for a long time. I was thinking about three options.

  1. Just include the newly discovered articles in the alphabetical list. (the old way)
  2. Include the newly discovered articles both in the alphabetical list and in a separate newly discovered list. (the new way)
  3. Rearrange the new articles list to be listed by date the article was promoted within WP:CHICAGO instead of the WP promotion date (see here). What do you think?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 15:31, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've gotten at least one message threatening that story with deletion on grounds of notability. I've read the notability guidelines, and I've seen nothing there that says it means a hate crime must have received widespread coverage, involved a high profile victim, been the first of its kind, inspired huge protests, or caused new laws to be written. But those are the criteria that have been used to suggest that two of the most recent articles I've submitted about hate crimes victims be deledted.

How subjective is notability on Wikipedia? TerranceDC 20:33, 20 August 2007 (UTC) Reply

Did I piss you off? It seems that the only time I hear from you these days is about a disagreement. --TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 01:56, 22 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Powers comments are welcome. I will try to make some fixes today. The COTW comments seemed a little snarky. I will try to trim when I get a chance. I have been trying to modify {{CUR-CHICOTW}}. I still think it is better than {{underconstruction}}, which is an article space template as I understand it. The home (sports) debate seemed illogical to me. I think you are wrong on this one. However, all that aside you are a tremendously productive contributor and would hope to entice you to be more active rather than less. I have been trying to get you to add to our votes at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chicago/Assessment#Current_Top-importance_Candidates and still hope to see you there. I also continue to welcome you to WP:CHICOTW and its collaborations. We need all hands on deck at WP:CHICAGO and you have good hands. Keep coming. I was more worried than anything else about being blindsided at WP:RFA given all the disagreements we have because I will probably make another run in the next few weeks.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 16:44, 22 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
