I got your note about this article, but it puzzled me. All I've done in this article was revert a single line of vandalism. Maybe someone else made the edits you're thinking of? -FisherQueen 12:53, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
sorry, what do you mean? {{JFBurton 16:10, 25 November 2006 (UTC)}}
- Anyway, now that I've taken a second look at the page, I'm glad you sent that message to me. I would never have looked back at this page if you hadn't messaged me, and wouldn't have seen the changes you've made, which do not reflect Wikipedia's neutral point of view. Remember that Wikipedia isn't a place for opinion, but only for facts which are supported with references. -FisherQueen 12:57, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
Ahh, thats ok. Yeah, some people never learn.
I've added in the heights above sea-level in both metres and feet now, to avoid any kind of argument about which to use. I trust that will be the end of it. Since other measurements are in Metric units, I've placed the traditional Imperial Measurement in parentheses.Thank you. DDS talk 15:45, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, thats a good idea, Its just that most people looking at it will be english, and the english use feet. JFBurton 19:10, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Unusual edit
editHi, JFBurton. I noticed that you added this to the emetophobia article. I'm not sure what it is, actually, but discussion, voting, etc., don't belong on the article's page. Perhaps it would be better on the article's talk page. Joyous! | Talk 17:53, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Political cult article
editJohn, if you go to the article's discussion page you will see two postings in which I discussed in detail why I think this material doesn't belong in the article. Essentially, the material by BabyDweezil that I deleted points out that two ex-members of Marxist political cults wrote about their experiences, and a third was co-author of a book that described his own organization among about ten others. This doesn't rise to the level of any significance, since there are a greatly larger number of cult experts, scholars and journalists who accept and use the concept of political cults who were never members of Marxist parties, cultlike or otherwise; for instance, Robert Jay Lifton and Chip Berlet. But even if BabyD could provide a larger list of individuals the "facts" she cites would still be unworthy of inclusion here because he/she fails to cite any published expert statement that reflects his/her interpretation of the facts. As it stands, his/her material is (a) an inference from insufficient data; (b) original research; and {c} argumentum ad hominem. If you have any further questions, feel free to communicate them to me. And check out the text of my book on Lyndon LaRouche that I just placed online at [2] You might also check out the vast archive of news clips and public record information exposing the deceptive and destructive nature of BabyDweezil's so-called International Workers Party at [3]--Dking 18:27, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
- If you do peruse the site Dking recommends, you can fancy his views on Wikipedia monitors here (under the moniker "wordsmith"), and get some backgound on his complaints here. You can also visit some of the horrors he so vociferously rails against above here as well. Cheers. BabyDweezil 20:53, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Please argue your change, deleting the ref to 3-shires heads, on talk page. I think it's very relevant, given the the general remoteness of the area and the fact that the head is presumably in 3 police jurisdictions, making escape (from a treasonable offence)more likely. More relevant than Kettleshulme IMHO Bob aka Linuxlad 22:57, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

I suppose that that's a reasonable mistake — but it would in any case have been much better to have at least mentioned to them that you were doing it. The proposal is still there, so far as I know, and one person has genuinely signed as being interested. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:03, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
I don't understand — why on Earth did you remove <references/> from the Notes section? You gave no explanation, not even an edit summary. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 20:37, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- They're footnotes. Look at the text; there are little superscripted numbers in brackets, pointing to references; if you remove the <references/>, the notes don't display. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 20:45, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- That's OK; there's a lot to learn here, and you never stop. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:02, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry. It was me who put in the references. The reason was that there was a notice recently attached that said that there were unreferenced or uncited commenst made in the article. If I can quote from WP:V: The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth. "Verifiable" in this context means that any reader should be able to check that material added to Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source. Editors should provide a reliable source for material that is challenged or likely to be challenged, or it may be removed. I merely changed a few things in the article (about it being a civil parish, and it holding a parish meeting rather than it having a parish council), and then supplied two citations for the two claims I could easily track down at that time. I did it according to the advice given in WP:CITE. I agree that it looks ugly in its unrendered form. But ordinary readers will not see that - they will see the nicely rendered article without any of the formatting, etc stuff that we, as editors, have to know about and use. The hard rule is that if material can't be verified, using recognised sources of information (WP:V can help with this), then one should seriously doubt whether that material should be included at any stage of the article's development. I hope that explains things a bit more. DDStretch (talk) 22:31, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. Problem solved. Your right mel, I have a lot to learn. JFBurton 08:25, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
Blaster Bates
editHi, and welcome to wiki-p. Ignore all the nerds here that have no life beyond the interwebnet. I note you are from Cheshire; being a Staffordshire lad, I am bound to ask -- can you create the article Blaster Bates (drink) ? :) Devious Viper 22:11, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi JF. The stubs and categories aren't as arcane as they might appear. The full list of stubs is here, but if you are usually working within a set area you soon get used to knowing which one to use. The template is added using {{insert stub name here}} If you are unsure of a category, look at articles similar to the one you are working on, and see which categories they fall into. That will give you a heads up for how to cat your work. Then simply add them using [[Category:cat name here]] Devious Viper 18:43, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
I can't now recall how I spotted the article originally, but I was a big fan of Blaster Bates when I was a kid. Reading the article, I noted the red link to the cocktail, then later spotted you (again, I don't recall how) and saw you were a Cheshire lad - and hence perhaps the right candidate for a Cheshire article :) Devious Viper 18:51, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Your block log shows a long-term pattern of disrupting Wikipedia via adding nonsense to articles and attacking other editors. More recently CheckUser shows you have been playing games with sockpuppets, vandalizing pages with one userid, then reverting the vandalism with another. These games have gone on long enough. Admit your actions, apologize, and promise not to do it again. Jayjg (talk) 21:52, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Dylan Goodhue
editA tag has been placed on Dylan Goodhue, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia per CSD A7.
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}}
on the top of the article and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}}
on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the page's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. SingCal 07:22, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
Notability of Alison Hastings
editHello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Alison Hastings, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Alison Hastings seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Alison Hastings, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Unblock Appeal
edit{{unblock|Been offline for a long time now. Yes I've done some stupid things, but I've also started and improved hundreds articles and still seeing so many poorly written articles has made me want to enquire about getting myself unblocked.}}
- Given the length of this block and the seriousness of the prior allegations, I am bringing this unblock request to the attention of WP:ANI for further review by multiple admins. Please be patient. --Jayron32.talk.contribs 19:31, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- Well, we're still trying to work out a deal for you. Would you be willing to accept mentorship (probably from me) and a stated understanding that any uncivil results will result in an immediate reinstatement of your block? - Philippe | Talk 23:10, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Per discussion at AN/I, this account is unblocked. Given the past history, be aware that your future contributions will be watched. The unblock on this account does not extend to sockpuppet accounts. Gimmetrow 09:12, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- If you've read the discussion on AN/I, you're aware that I offered to work with you to make your time on Wikipedia successful. I stand by that offer of mentorship. You were unblocked before consensus could be formed to MANDATE such, though, so I can't require that you accept my mentorship. I do think, though, that it would be a good idea if you and I were to formalize some sort of mentorship agreement. Would you be willing to do so? - Philippe | Talk 21:51, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Mentoring
editI'm delighted that you've agreed to mentoring. I honestly believe that's the best path to success on Wikipedia, and that it will help you rebuild the confidence of those who will be dealing with you. I intend to require that you treat others with dignity and will - to the very best of my ability - require the same of others who interact with you, including myself. With that said, here are my requirements:
- Absolutely, unfailing courtesy at all times. If you encounter someone with whom you absolutely think you MUST be more direct, I need you to let me know about it PRIOR to leaving any message that could be construed as uncivil by a reasonable person. (I add the clause "by a reasonable person" because I know well that some people will be offended by ANYTHING. I don't want you trapped in a situation where someone says "I'm offended!" and you were dealing with them in a perfectly reasonable way.)
- Your edits will be audited for the next several months. From time to time I (or other users) may provide you with feedback on them. I hope that you'll pay close attention to the feedback and modify any edits to fit that feedback. I do not require you to blindly acquiesce to feedback. If the feedback is wrong or you believe it would lessen the quality of the edit, you certainly have the discretion to (politely) argue your case. But if it looks like the situation is coming to an impasse, please let me know and I'll intervene (or ask someone else to, if the situation is between the two of us) to bring it to a close. My goal here is to not create a situation where you get so "worked up" that you behave in a manner that gets your blocked again.
- Once you've been blocked and unblocked, you're going to encounter folks who say things like "well, I don't have to listen to you, you're a blocked user who's only back because....". The temptation to lash out at them is huge. Resist the temptation, and move on.
- A final, general, rule: if a situation becomes heated - and you know when they are - involve me. With the exception of a VERY few days, I'm available every day. Use me as both a backstop and a double-check.
In conclusion: my goal is for you to succeed. Your goal is for you to succeed, clearly. It's best for everyone in the project if you succeed. I'll be your advocate, but I'll also be your strongest critic. Please respect the dual role that I'm in. This process will work best if you proactively participate in it, and come to me with issues, questions, etc, rather than waiting for me to come to you. You should always feel free to use the "E-mail this user" function to reach me. I wish you all the best of luck as we move forward. - Philippe | Talk 16:27, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Your edit to Miami created an enormous error in the demographics section, and I have corrected it. I am assuming that you are not familiar with the criteria used for the Census Bureau for counting, and it was a good-faith effort, but it was quite wrong. In a city in which 59.5% of the city is foreign-born, and of those 96.4% are from Latin America, identifying 0.02% of the population as Hispanic is way off the mark. this table from the Census Bureau indicates that 66.6 percent of the city's residents speak Spanish as a first language, and 47.1% (of all residents) speak Spanish as a first language, and English "less than very well". It appears that you were trying to make the demographic figures add up to 100%, which doesn't work. The question asking if a person is Hispanic is an additional question (in other words, all the Hispanic people belong to another racial group first, then identify as Hispanic as well). It makes dealing with demographics so much fun, and it's all politicized to boot. I don't know if you've changed any others (Miami is on my watchlist, which is why I caught it), but you ought to go back and change any others you've adjusted. Hi, I'm a user in the he wikipedia who translates article about Muzic and Muzicians, and so I came to your article about Jacopo Melani, but there is a problem there - you began with Melani and then went on about Bertali. So what am I supposed to do? Can you please check it out and correct the article? Thank you, Shlomith Kedem —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.139.220.121 (talk) 07:19, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

editHello JFBurton! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced.
