Importing images from foreign language wikipedias

Hi there. What is the proper procedure for importing pictures from the foreign language versions of articles? The Thai wikipedia page for Tinospora cordifolia has an image for the plant which appears to have a valid copyright release tag by the author and so should be able to be imported onto the english wikipedia page for this plant. However I'm unsure of the correct procedure to do this, and it appears it was done previously and the image was deleted for not having the correct tag. Please advise :-) Meodipt (talk) 06:56, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Got it! I imported it into Commons from the Thai wiki using CommonsHelper, which was a bit of an adventure since I'd never done that before. Thanks for the fun challenge! And if you need any help with the tool, just ask. I found it at Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons. --JaGatalk 07:35, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Fangoria

The article Fangoria seems to have too many fair use images. If you have some time, please consider listing some at IMFD. Thanks. -- Suntag 22:26, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Church disambiguation page

The Christian Church is very different from Ecclesia. The former refers to the entire Church body, while the later refers to a group of believers. As such, I have reverted your edit to the Church disambiguation page. — ŁittleÄlien¹8² (talk\contribs) 06:32, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

  • I made that edit after merging Ecclesia (church) into Christian Church. There isn't as much difference between the two terms as you think. You can leave Ecclesia on the disambig page if you wish, but it's just a redirect to Christian Church now. --JaGatalk 06:55, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

Should your "Bridge to Nowhere" revert be undone?

Shouldn't this revert be undone? - because Bridge to Nowhere is a disambiguation page? 58.8.1.229 (talk) 17:06, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

I chose to put it back because the disambig page is the only one I know of that lists the various Alaskan "Bridges to Nowhere". So it is useful. --JaGatalk 18:15, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Proposed bailout of U.S. financial system (2008)

Hello JaGa: I see that you've removed some portions from the intro of this article. I've no problem if you add them to a related or concerned section rather than completely deleting them. Thus, I've temporarily undid them. Please reword any portions that sound like POV and relist them. You could probably make a section entitled Alternative solutions or Other proposed solutions, etc. because that would at least allow people to think about the deal from both points-of-view as well as give them info. about alternative solutions that could be enacted. Thanks & Regards--Bugnot (talk) 04:33, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

I don't like the bailout either, but putting a letter to the editor at the top of the article is terrible undue weight - and your paragraphs are strong anti- without any balance. I've removed the letter to the editor and moved the other paragraphs into a section called "Opposition". I like the idea of the section but it needs work. --JaGatalk 09:08, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

That information can be cited, the one about illegal campaigning. That is true facts so why was it deleted?

Do you just watch pages? Or how does it work? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.117.1.138 (talk) 18:54, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Put the citations in, and no one will delete it. We have to be very careful about negative information about living people; it must be cited. --JaGatalk 18:57, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm sorry but the history section for St. Louis is not cited. Please add citations.

You should find citations instead of just deleting everything. It looks legitimate and well written; let's save the content and give it proper citations instead of just deleting. --JaGatalk 18:43, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

My apologies

I am a Jr. High teacher, and I was giving a lesson on the inherent unreliability of Wikipedia as a source when completing research. I just logged on to revert the page back to where it was, as I am done with the lesson. I am encouraged to see that information on Wikipedia is so regularly checked (though I still consider it a poor source for citation). In the past, I had a teacher who posted blatantly false information that stayed up for several weeks.

Once again, my apologies.

Thanks for letting me know. I reverted some more vandalism by that IP on Ottoman military reform efforts and gave him a warning. Unfortunately, I can't get him blocked until we have a log of several warnings against him; the older edits could be from another person (the IP could be a shared one at a library or school, for instance, or an ISP may have given the IP to a different subscriber by now) so we can't hold the current IP responsible for those edits. --JaGatalk 18:33, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Image:Kleingladenbach.jpg listed for deletion

What was that all about? Kelisi (talk) 04:48, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm putting orphaned images that have been replaced by PNGs up for deletion. But when I looked closely at the replacement for Image:Kleingladenbach.jpg (Image:Wappen Kleingladenbach (Breidenbach).png) it occurred to me that they're both flawed - the JPG has artifacts, but the PNG is unsharp. So I'm not going to request either get deleted right away. --JaGatalk 05:21, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Surname template

Hi. I created a bunch of surname articles so you're recent actions are popping up on my watchlist. The surname is generally useless (see my discussion initiation here. You also "destubb" and I don't know why. But I wouldn't really have a problem with what you're doing if not for the creation of redundant cats. You see, {{surname}} automatically puts the article into Category:Surnames and some of the articles are already in one of the Category:Surnames subcategories such as Category:Hispanic surnames, thus creating redundant cats. So please, in the future when you want to add the surname template to an article, add the template as {{surname|nocat}}, which creates the template but does not create the category. Thanks, --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 22:38, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Orphan tag on A.R. Natarajan page

Hi JaGa,

I have put links from Ramana Maharshi page and Nome, Spiritual Teacher page to A.R. Natrajan's page. Do we need more links so that we can remove the orphan tag from A.R. Natarajan page? Thank you for your help.

Sincerely, Rmuthukrishnan (talk)RMuthukrishnan

Hi Rmuthukrishnan, thanks for the kind note! I had to fix the links on Ramana Maharshi and Nome, Spiritual Teacher - to count, it has to be a Wikipedia link, not an external link. (If you look at "What links here" for A.R. Natarajan, you'll now see Ramana Maharshi and Nome, Spiritual Teacher). You may want to check out the orphanage for guidance on de-orphaning. Technically, the article is still an orphan since it only has links from two articles (the disambig doesn't count), but I went ahead and removed the template. --JaGatalk 21:08, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
Thank you very much JaGa. I will look into making sure the article qualifies for de-orphaning. Rmuthukrishnan (talk)Rmuthukrishnan —Preceding undated comment was added at 06:27, 15 January 2009 (UTC).

A.K. Khondakar

Hi

I just wanted to point out that there is already an article on Air Vice Marshal (Retd) AK Khandker. You may wish to update that article.

I would also like to point out that his surname is misspelt on Wikipedia. It is actually Khandker.

Thank you RR79 (talk) 05:45, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip! I merged the articles and redirected A.K. Khondakar to A. K. Khondakar per naming conventions. I couldn't change the name to Khandker though, because I couldn't find a source to verify the name - instead, I found a news article that used the Khandakar name. --JaGatalk 15:59, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi JaGa

I may be able to help you with the verification of the spelling. Please see http://www.sectorcommandersforum.org/ which has his surname spelt out correctly. Different newspapers seem to be using different spellings. Hope this assists.

RR79 (talk) 14:07, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

You've convinced me. I moved the page to A. K. Khandker and added some refs as well. --JaGatalk 16:43, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Jan Fridegård

He was born Johan Fridolf Johansson but later use the name Jan Fridegård. Actually i don't really know if it's just a pseudonym or if he changed it, and i don't find any good sources for it right now, but it should be noted in the article then. You can see for example here (in swedish) about his birthname. --Skizzik talk 22:56, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Idea for new disambiguation tool

Hi! I just noticed your exciting post about your new Toolserver tool for disambiguation pages with links, I like it :-). Thinking about the problem from the other direction, would it be possible to input an article title, say Frog, and output how many links to disambiguation pages are in the article & list the links that need to be fixed.

And even create a list of articles with the most links to disambiguation page.

I have had this idea for a while, but I don't know the best place to request it, maybe it even exists already.--Commander Keane (talk) 11:54, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

That's a good idea - implementation could be tough, though. I'll investigate. Thanks for the idea! --JaGatalk 15:25, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
The more I think about this, the more I realize what a great idea this is. I'll try to put something together - I think it's possible, but I don't want to make promises until I get under the hood. --JaGatalk 15:44, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
Don't worry I will not get excited, the last time I suggested a disambiguation tool for the Toolserver a developer made it for me and then the toolserver died for about 1 year :-( Thinking about it, a list of articles with the most links is probably impossible due to the number of requests (with >2 million articles). But perhaps the tool could regularly (one a day/week etc) sample 10000 random pages and list the top 50 with the most disambiguation links. Anyway, thank you for listening to my idea, at least I know I am not crazy as you agree with me :-) --Commander Keane (talk) 02:41, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

DPL

If I could ask you a favor, please let me know if you make any changes to the formatting or content of your "Disambiguation pages with links" toolserver tool. I've modified my bot to read from it, but the bot assumes that the page will be formatted as it now is, so if there are any changes, I need to update the bot as well. Right now, the bot is expecting to read about 5500 pages with 50 or more links, but you changed the tool so it now will try to swallow over 130,000 pages with 1 or more links; I suspect this will cause the WP:DPM update tomorrow to fail. Easy enough to fix if I had known about it, but the bot runs on a machine at work and I won't be able to fix the script over the weekend. The same kind of issue could arise if you changed the HTML format of the output. Thanks for doing this tool -- it's great, and I don't mean to sound critical at all, I just want to make sure I keep in synch with what you are doing. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 12:46, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Enda Caldwell

Deletion nominations should explain why you feel the article doesn't meet the guideline or policy cited. Please expand your reasoning for this AFD.- Mgm|(talk) 12:00, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Hello,

Can you please explain to me in simple terms what I must do to clean up the article Enda Caldwell ? in order to remove it's nomination for deletion? I am truly an Irish Radio Personality from Co.Meath as the article says. Also I was trying to find better examples of media references to myself on various websites and newspaper articles. I do not know how to verify a source. Please help me as I really would not like to have the article deleted as I have spent a lot of time and energy in trying to make the article as fair and balanced as possible for Wikipedia. Please feel free to make changes and / or edits necessary or tell me what to remove that is offending?

Thanks, Enda Caldwell --Enda Caldwell (talk) 17:42, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

For both posts - look at WP:ENTERTAINER under WP:BIO. I don't feel that most radio personalities are going to pass this guideline. --JaGatalk 17:52, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

G6 image speedies

Regarding File:Electronic Amplifier Efficiency Switch 1.GIF and others. You want me to speedy the wikipedia pages because the SVG tag was erroneously placed here rather than on commons, correct? Protonk (talk) 22:53, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Yep. Especially since we don't use the image here in EN wiki. Any suggestions how best to word that? I come across these kinds of images fairly frequently. --JaGatalk 23:13, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
I would just make a boilerplate statement like "this image isn't hosted or used on en-wp, but these tags have been erroneously applied here (rather than at commons). Please delete this image in order to avoid possible file corruption." or something like that. You can still speedy them as G6's but adding that will help those of us who are moving through the deletion queue. Protonk (talk) 03:04, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Signpost Article

I recently read the Signpost article that referenced your work in finding the number of orphaned articles. First, I must say that that is very impressive. Second, I have two questions:

  1. How did you find this out? I don't believe it said how in the article, and it seems quite interesting.
  2. Would it be possible to get a bot to go and tag all these articles? If yes, I'll post on WP:BOTREQ.
Thank you, ErikTheBikeMan (talk) 02:32, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks much for the comment, Erik. The information was really a byproduct of my daily orphan-analysis on the toolserver, which is based largely on the code by User Mashiah on the RU wiki. I take a list of all mainspace articles and join it with the pagelinks table (which holds a row for every single link between two pages), and do count queries on the results. It's actually more complicated than that, but that's the idea in a nutshell.
Regarding the bot, I've created a page specifically for bots wanting to tag orphans, and am looking for a user. It takes 5000 untagged orphans, double checks their status on command, and generates a bot-friendly list. So the bot is guaranteed an up-to-date list of orphans as soon as they trigger a "regeneration". I've approached User:Addshore about using his Addbot on it, and he's shown interest, but I don't think there'd be anything wrong with you posting a bot request. Frankly, I'd be thrilled if someone would start using the bot page. --JaGatalk 02:47, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Lonelypages & Subpages

Your toolserver Lonelypages report lists subpages that are transcluded into a main page. For an example, it lists Mexican general election, 2006/Graph & Mexican general election, 2006/Graph 2 (they're entries 56013 & 56014 at the moment) which are both graphs in the Mexican general election, 2006 page. I don't believe such subpages should be listed as orphans. Especially since most taggers don't pay attention to the transclusion and don't encase the tag in a <noinclude> statement so the orphan tag gets transcluded on the main page.

Is it possible to not list pages that contain a "/" and are transcluded?

One could argue whether people should be doing it that way, but that's a different issue. Given that people do it, I think we need to handle it.

Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 13:13, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Excellent suggestion. I've implemented a solution, which removed about 2500 articles from the orphan lists (mostly "List of asteroid/..." transclusions), so we've avoided a lot of future hassle at little cost. But yeah, that /Graph subpage should be in the template namespace! --JaGatalk 22:27, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Transcluded articles are still an issue. It turns out there are many without slashes as well. See this discussion for more details. Can you excluded all transcluded articles? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 01:44, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Done - at least for bot-tagged pages. I detailed my changes on Addshore's page. --JaGatalk 12:41, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
