Medical Translation Newsletter Aug./Sept. 2014
editMedical Translation Newsletter
Issue 2, Aug./Sept. 2014
by CFCF
During August we have translated Disease and it is now live in more than 60 different languages! To help us focus on African languages Rubric has donated a large number of articles in languages we haven't previously reached–so a shout out them, and Ian Henderson from Rubric who's joined us here at Wikipedia. We're very happy for our continued collaboration with both Rubric and Translators without Borders!
- Just some of our over 60 translations:
- New roles and guides!
At Wikimania there were so many enthusiastic people jumping at the chance to help out the Medical Translation Project, but unfortunately not all of them knew how to get started. That is why we've been spending considerable time writing and improving guides! They are finally live, and you can find them at our home-page!
- New sign up page!
We're proud to announce a new sign up page at WP:MTSIGNUP! The old page was getting cluttered and didn't allow you to speficy a role. The new page should be easier to sign up to, and easier to navigate so that we can reach you when you're needed!
- Style guides for translations
Translations are of both full articles and shorter articles continues. The process where short articles are chosen for translation hasn't been fully transparent. In the coming months we hope to have a first guide, so that anyone who writes medical or health articles knows how to get their articles to a standard where they can be translated! That's why we're currently working on medical good lede criteria! The idea is to have a similar peer review process to good article nominations, but only for ledes.
- Some more stats
- In July, 18 full article translations went live (WP:RTT), and an additional 6 simplified versions went live (WP:RTTS)!
- We have a number of new lead integrators into Dutch, Polish, Arabic and Bulgarian, with more to come in smaller languages! (Find them here old sign up page)
- We were mentioned in a Global Voices Online report by Subhashish Panigrahi at Doctors and translators are working together to bridge Wikipedia's medical language gap
- New medical professionals have started, dedicated to working in Odiya and Kinyarwanda!

- There's still something wrong with your signature. It doesn't contain active wikilinks which lead to your user page and talk page. It should, at the very least, have wikilinks like in my sig above. You can set it up in your "preferences".
- Regarding "RE the revert, I think it's lost the distinction between complementary medicine and complementary therapy - they are different.", I suspect you're engaging in OR there. You'd need multiple RS to make that distinction from the myriad other RS which don't make such a distinction. -- Brangifer (talk) 07:08, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for that - as a newcomer to editing, trying to decode your OR and RS I'm guessing you're saying there are not enough sources/citations to make it a strong distinction? If that's the case I there are many - although I think this may be something which changes according to US/UK/Australian English, so perhaps that's what needs flagging. It is an important distinction though that needs correcting in my opinion.jacknunn Jack Nunn 03:21, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution
edit Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Cochrane Library into Systematic review. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution
. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was copied, attribution is not required. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:41, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
Thank you (User:Diannaa) - I was not aware this was the case for a sentence or two and will certainly be sure to do that in the future - that sentence was the only part of the page I took from another. Jack Nunn 01:02, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
Your draft article, Draft:The database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP)

, {{db-draft}}
, or {{db-g13}}
code.

Problem with your custom signature
editYou have a custom signature set in your account preferences. A change to Wikipedia's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.
The problem: Your preferences are set to interpret your custom signature as wikitext. However, your current custom signature does not contain any wikitext.
The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.
- Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:
- Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
- Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
- Remove anything in the Signature: text box. (It might already be empty.)
- Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)
- Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:
- Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
- Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
- Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page.
More information about custom signatures is available at Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing how everyone sees your signature. If you have followed these instructions and still want help, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Signatures. 19:04, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
- Jacknunn, please don't include external links in your signature. It is a violation of guideline WP:SIG#EL. Thanks. —andrybak (talk) 14:52, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
I'll try and fix this, quite confused! Thank you Jack Nunn Jacknunn ([[2]]) 01:49, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
