Thanks for your comments on Belldandy. :) I've been letting the article sit for a week so I can get some distance (I find I'm a better editor of my writing if I let time pass before returning to it, but I so rarely get the opportunity to take some time), but I'll start making changes in the next few days. Japan Portal

Hi.

I stopped by to take a look at Portal Japan, and here's my first impression:

The multipage format seems awkward, since the screen doesn't change when you click on a tab (you have to scroll down to see the change). A design in which the screen changes when you click on a tab would be an improvement (IMHO). That would probably entail replacing the intro section with a themed section on the subpages, or removing the top frame altogether from those subpages. Just a suggestion. It would set the Japan portal apart from other portals of the standard tab design, making it more distinct. It might even set a new standard. The Transhumanist    20:37, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

List of basic Japan topics

The list is completed enough for general use, so I've moved it to article space and added it to Lists of basic topics.

I'm in the process of adding pictures to it. I've been trying to find pictures that aren't included on the Japan Portal, so that together these two pages provide a more varied introduction to Japan and don't just duplicate each others efforts.

Your help would be appreciated and is very much welcomed.

JapanWiki

Hey JadeFox! I recently began a project called japanwiki (japanwiki.org). I did that before I discovered the Portal:Japan function in Wikipedia. I respect the work you have done so far and I was wondering if you could ask the community what they think is best. The portal function of Wikipedia or a completely independent site. I built the site using mediawiki (same as wikipedia) and I am hoping to make it a source of knowledge for Japan. I wanted to ask for the help of the community but I see that a lot of the work has already been done here. Do you think the community would be willing to move the content to JapanWiki? What do you think? I took a look at Japanwiki and so far it looks like a good start. I understand the desire to want a seperate wiki for Japan related materials. There are times where the direction of wikipedia (an online encyclopedia) tends to limit the amount of information added to it. This is why wikis like Wookiepedia or the J-Drama wiki have begun to take off since it is an outlet for this information. That being said, I am quite interested in knowing what sort of plan you had for Japanwiki. From your intro segment on the front page, I get the impression that it would be much more open to people adding original content, and how-to guides. If this is the case, I think that Japanwiki could be a great project.

As far as my opinion on moving content, I have mixed feelings regarding this. In some ways, the information should be moved and remolded to fit the direction of the site. This would allow for a easily accessable information. On the other hand, I strongly oppose that idea. For one, even though content added to wikipedia is technically in the public domain, it is still the work of a large collection of people (and I wouldn't want Japanwiki just to turn into another about.com or similar leeching site). Also, there would be information overlap and require updates be made in two (or more) different wiki's. Instead of moving content, I think it would be a much better idea to just have a link to the wikipedia article at the top of the page or section.

Take the Tokyo stub for instance. If I wanted to get a general overview of Tokyo, the wikipedia article has been well established thus far. What if I was planning a trip to Japan and wanted to get a little bit of background information on the cities I was traveling to? Well, the http://travelwiki.org/en/Tokyo article isn't too shabby. So what about if I was going to live in Japan for a couple year to study. Now we are getting information that is a little less centralized. What about other people's experiences living in Tokyo? I'm just stating some things to think about.

In a nutshell, I think it's a cool idea to offer a more personalized source of knowledge on Japan related topics, but I would advise against repeating what's already been done (espesially on Wikipedia due to its notariaty on the Internet due to its popularity). It becomes more tedious for editors to update two wikis and most commited editors are already on Wikipedia. The existing Portal:Japan is shaping up to be a great jump-off point to general topics related to Japan. In addition, the List of Japan topics was just completed as well which is also a great starting point. All that said, I'd be hearing more of what you had in mind for japanwiki.org. -JadeFox (talk) 21:14, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
