- Hi @Jamesaharrisonuk, do you perhaps have a relation to John: you have the same surname? Let me know. Qcne (talk) 12:21, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- I don't have sources yet. I'm still working on the content. I just want to save the content without scrutiny of others (just yet). In time, yes, people can look at it and critique it. For now I want to just save it and come back to it later without anyone looking at it. I did not find this feature anywhere and the only corse of action is to publish it.
- I will get references, just takes time. Jamesaharrisonuk (talk) 12:27, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- I'm completely new to creating a Wikipedia page. So far it's not very easy to do much. Jamesaharrisonuk (talk) 12:34, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- How do I continuw editing the page I just spent hours doing? Jamesaharrisonuk (talk) 12:35, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Jamesaharrisonuk.
- Firstly, in Wikipedia, the Publish button on the Editor is the same as a Save button in a Word processor. This saves your work and publishes the changes to the draft.
- However you shouldn't actually Submit for Review or Resubmit until you have finished the Draft and want it to be reviewed by one of us reviewers. That's why I declined it, as it wasn't ready for moving out of draft form to article.
- To continue editing the draft, please click the Edit button. I would recommend turning on the Visual Editor and following the tutorials there, which is much more user friendly than the code editor.
- Writing an article on Wikipedia is the hardest task any user can do, and it is a shame you have decided to jump straight in to this without spending a few months getting used to our policies and guidelines. It's akin to performing at a concert when you've only just started learning to play an instrument!
- I presume you are John's son, as you share the same name as the son on the infobox. Please note it is mandatory to make a conflict of interest declaration. You have a conflict of interest because you are related to the subject.
- A word of warning though: it may be difficult for you to write dispassionately about your father. Writing in a neutral way is a core policy of Wikipedia. It is prohibited to use Wikipedia to promote a subject. Please read WP:NPOV and WP:PEACOCK.
- Finally, to understand if your father even merits a Wikipedia article please read our notability requirements for authors at WP:NAUTHOR. Only persons who meet that criteria can have articles.
- Happy to answer any questions you may have, just reply here. You can also ping me by writing my username with an @ key, as in @Qcne. Qcne (talk) 12:38, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- And, my apologies @Jamesaharrisonuk, you have correctly made that conflict of interest declaration. Thank you, I didn't spot it before. Qcne (talk) 12:42, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- You make a lot of assumptions about me. Yes I am his son and yes I am able to write " dispassionately" about him should I need to, but I'm hoping I dont have to if I write factually. I will keep it just the facts. I know how to do this so it's not a biased account of his history’s /life.
- I plan on getting references for as much as I can, but passage of time, people loose their information. GDPR. I'm currently asking for employment records for a newspaper that does not exist, but hoping the parent company still has records. Jamesaharrisonuk (talk) 12:47, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi again @Jamesaharrisonuk, it isn't a "should you need to": writing in a neutral tone is a fundamental requirement for all parts of the text.
- You also say "I plan on getting references for as much as I can, but passage of time, people loose their information. GDPR."
- Please note that for biographies, it is a hard requirement that every statement must be cited by a published source. You cannot rely on primary sources or anything which is not published in some way. That includes things like conversations, memories, unpublished interviews, etc. If you are unable to find published sources to back up a statement, the statement should not be included in the draft.
- Wikipedia articles are tertiary, which means that they should only summarise or paraphrase what published sources (preferably secondary) have stated about a subject. You may want to read our policy on original research.
- I wonder if you are trying to write this draft backwards? You should be finding all the published, preferably secondary, sources first - and only then start writing the draft content by summarising or paraphrasing those sources.
- I am just trying to give you advice so you don't make the very common mistakes that new editors always do when trying to write an article as their first task. It is very difficult and we discourage it, especially if you have a conflict of interest.
- Hope that helps,
- Let me know if you have any questions/concerns. Qcne (talk) 12:56, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- OK. How do I delete everything I've just done? Jamesaharrisonuk (talk) 12:58, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- You would like to delete the draft? You can just add the text {{db-author}} to the draft page, with the parenthesis. Qcne (talk) 13:03, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi. Thanks for that. Then what? Jamesaharrisonuk (talk) 13:37, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Once you have added that code to the draft, an administrator will come along to delete it in due course. Qcne (talk) 13:41, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Do I have to publish? Jamesaharrisonuk (talk) 13:53, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
