Possible problems with the username policy

edit

Hello. In investigating the request to delete Wild Koala Day, I noticed that your username might be problematic in terms of the username policy. I see that this day is the creation of the Koala Clancy Foundation which was itself created by Janine Duffy, the owner of the Echidna Walkabout tour company. I first want to make it clear that I am not asking if you are that Janine Duffy. It really wouldn't matter if you said you were since there's no way of confirming it and even if it were, I would be outing you possibly against your will. That said, this username certainly gives the impression that you are and therefore runs into the policy against promotional usernames. You will probably want to read those policy links and then check out user rename request page instructions. Thanks for your help and joining the project. Hi Eggishorn Thanks for alerting me to this. I have requested a user name change. Golly, negotiating the minefield of Wikipedia policies is involved. Do you have any feedback on Wild Koala Day page? As a very busy small business owner and not for profit president, I don't like to waste time on projects that won't go ahead. Thanks Janine Echidna Walkabout (talk) 02:45, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi again Eggishorn - I have just seen the comments on Wild Koala Day. Thankyou, that does help a lot. I am happy to make the changes you suggest - as you can probably tell, my errors are through ignorance rather than intent. The Aims section is the stated aims of Wild Koala Day, which I thought was the purpose of this section. Thanks for your time on this Janine Echidna Walkabout (talk) 02:51, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Janine, as a small business owner myself, I completely understand your time constraints. As a user that also had to work their way through the various policies (as every one does), I also understand your bewilderment. One valuable resource is the guide to writing your first article. I will also add another section below with an (admittedly belated) welcome message that has a whole host of links to help you through the maze. Best wishes. Eggishorn Thankyou. I was interested in your suggestion to create a page for Koala Clancy Foundation. Is that ok? Are Non Profits allowed to list themselves? Janine Echidna Walkabout (talk) 04:29, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Janine, I would not suggest that you create the article yourself. The basic issue is this: Wikipedia has, over the course of many discussions, reached two decisions that affect you concerning this organization: 1) People directly connected to an article's subject should not be the ones to make the biggest contributions to that article and 2) There need to be significant, independent, verifiable sources to each claim an article makes. There are good reasons for this site to have made those decisions, but I recognize they can easily feel discriminatory to those caught against them.
What I would suggest is that you use your sandbox to create some notes about the organization. In the AfD discussion, I've already posted links to some sources, so it will need any other sources you know of, plus some basic organizational information (date of foundation, purpose, governance, any government recognition or oversight, etc.) You can access your sandbox at User:Janine Echidna Walkabout/sandbox. If that looks useful, I may be able to take it and create an article, I am not promising anything, you understand. Normally, I would suggest using the Requested Articles feature, but since in this case, I've done some research already, I think we can shortcut that process. Eggishorn Thankyou very much for your help. I have put some info on my sandbox, and if it is suitable and you are able to create a page for Koala Clancy Foundation from that, I would be very grateful. I will certainly persist with Wikipedia, especially in areas where I am not so involved. Janine Echidna Walkabout (talk) 07:09, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
