Where'd the message thread go?

Ok back to your query at my talk - I would say that the effectiveness of the separating the watch list into sections is not effective over 15k on the list - my watchlist being much larger it has no positive aspect at all - but it does do the task - and doesnt take long... Vaguely related, I increased my watchlist to 15K yesterday, by adding all the scripts in user space that weren't named "common.js, or that didn't have a skin name, or "twinkle", in them. (That's about 8K). I learned that there's only a couple people active writing scripts. What an anti-climax. Unless users are writing scripts directly in their common.js or vector.js pages. Or offline. How common is that? The Transhumanist 10:16, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

@Transhumanist: Watchlist size - I have been close to 50k for ages, and it really is ineffective, as only a small %age ever gets attention - I think about 20k is best size - but it will take ages to manually manipulate the larger one -it doesnt want changes of any substance during the reduction editing... and refuses to operate on big edits...catch 22 and all JarrahTree 10:23, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

You mean, once you hit a certain size, you're stuck? That's a hell of a bug. What about editing the raw watchlist? It accepts additions of thousands of links at a time (I just added 8,000). To remove stuff, can't you just cut and paste the whole thing into an editor and then cut and paste it back in when you are done? The Transhumanist 06:56, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

It's rather obtuse of me, but while I know there are technical things one should do, I can't lift myself to do them, trusting in the whitefellah trackers keeping an eye on the spoors of errancy as I trek across the indigenous landscape. By the way, everytime I start a page with the pat line '..are/were an indigenous Australian people of..' or write 'according to Norman Tindale' (attribution that is obligatory since much of the mapping and the territorial conceit behind it is questioned), I have an image of myself as Jack Nicholson in The Shining, bashing away on the typewriter infinite repetitions of 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy'. :) Nishidani (talk) 11:45, 4 February 2018 (UTC)

    • January 2018 brought us 9,770,248 edits, 445,027 new items were created.
    • The number of users that edited Wikidata per day grew in 2017 from 2439 to 2672 users, 9,6% more compared to 2016. The number of edits by them grew with 18% to 190k edits per day. We also get edited by 542 IP adresses per day, 50% more than in 2016.
    • In 2017, Wikidata got edited by 46 various bots per day, executing 334k edits per day (63% more than in 2016). The most active bot in 2017 was Emijrpbot, who added 18 million edits to Wikidata.
    • 284 million statements now contain references, compared to 67 million at the start of 2017. The average number of statements per item grew from 5 to almost 9. 73 million qualifiers are now used to provide more details for statements, 13 million in early 2017.

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello JarrahTree, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!

The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

• The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
• We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

• We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

• ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
• Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

Jarrah is, no brownschnozzing intended, a very experienced hand in this, and his point reflects the known distinction between the substantive native (a put-down) and the adjective native, which, in English, is perfectly neutral, indeed has a positive resonance, e.g. we speak of the insights derived from an etic perspective as 'native knowledge' without connoting that we are dealing with savages' fantasies. Or one can remark on someone having a 'native command of English' (et al.,) without implying he is a pernickety jungle or desert sandnigger upstart. Much of the grog I quaff comes from vines 'native to Italy', one of the most civilized, if not the most civilized, countries on earth. But if you say 'the natives are getting restless', the colonial sahib hauteur murmuring behind the phrase is self-evidentNishidani (talk) 20:22, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Thank you so much, this is absolutely fascinating, here in Ireland because we have some post-colonial border issues still going on 100 years later, we sometimes use the term "native land" as a 'fudge' where it's a polite way of talking about the country without specifying whether we mean the whole island of Ireland, or just the Republic of Ireland (the "south") so as not to offend anyone, so it's considered vague enough that everyone will interpret it in a way that is least offensive to themselves. And I absolutely agree with you on the 'the natives are getting restless' point, if that is meant in a condescending fashion, it's is grounds for a punch-up (verbally, at least). I happened to be thinking of stories told in the family of the famine years in the 1840s, and of course of the old contrast between the Anglo-Irish protestant ascendancy, and the 'native' Irish Catholics. There's a hint of it in a novel, I see

“Miss Nolan,” Mrs. Redmond said. The teacher was in front of a large blackboard, sitting behind her desk on a raised platform at the head of the room. Of course. Colin Brown was in Sue Nolan's class. The weekly newsletter was started by Lydia at the very beginning of the Wikidata project, even before the first deployment, to keep the community informed about the developments, the new projects and tools. More than five years later, the newsletter is still there, its content powered by the community, and sent every week all along the years. I wanted to say a warm "thank you!" to each person who helped filling the Weekly Summary <3

Over the past years, as you know, Wikidata has grown a lot. More data, more tools, more editors and reusers, more exciting projects led by the community. The Weekly Summary has evolved with us, and the 300th edition seems a good moment to ask you all your suggestions about the newsletter, how it could continue evolving, and how you would like to improve it.

While I have your attention (from my wtfs), I was (in any case) just about to point you at this new article and its new user, who was having a bad time in Article for Creation. I was pretty sure that building was heritage-listed so, having checked and it was indeed on the WA State Heritage Register) I added that fact (which then makes it notable) and accepted the article into mainspace. As expected, a greatly increased number of unsuitable articles and candidates for deletion are showing up in the feed again, and the backlog has since increased already by ~30%. Paid editing

• Now that ACTRIAL is inoperative pending discussion, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

• The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
• Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies. A further discussion is currently taking place at: Can a subject specific guideline invalidate the General Notability Guideline?

Nominate competent users for Autopatrolled

• He was talking to guys in uniform who'd had their colleagues damaged or killed when he shared those pearls of wisdom with the planet. So no, nothing about universities there - just the ramblings of a Rhodes Scholar who should be capable of more useful statements.
• The event-in-question was at a UniSA building, but not a library. 50% score on that aspect?
• No, University Libraries in general, and a couple in particular, don't seem to be faring particularly well at the moment.

We generally don't delete stubs just because of inactivity; some are called "permastubs" because there is suspicion that there is a low likelihood that any one of them will be developed beyond stub-ness. However, for many stubs, they fill a few purposes that a blank page cannot fill: (a) they provide a beginning to someone who can and does want to expand them by providing a framework so that like type articles look alike; (b) they populate templates and categories so those seeking further information actually have something to find and expand; (c) they allow unregistered users (who from time to time are precluded from creating articles) to expand the articles; and (d) they try to even out the extensive coverage of every place or person in the English-speaking world but less coverage elsewhere (see Wikipedia:Systemic_bias#Nature_of_Wikipedia's_bias, an essay but some folks' thoughts on the challenge). • As I suggested, reasonable minds limited by AGF can differ. These principles aren't all to my liking, but after a few years here, they become "known terrain" to navigate through. Early on, Wikipedia suffered from a dearth of content and there were many projects that sought to expand the number of articles at all costs as a team-building and perhaps clout-building exercise, or possibly to show some raison d'etre. So we have literally millions of stubs of long-standing - even those which have been edited since create are most often edited by bots, just correcting spelling or changing categories as they shift or are renamed. I tend to think of the permastubs less as a bug than a feature. Nearly every small village or town in the first world has many online or readily accessible sources to be expanded and some nearby editors who care enough to dabble in editing the article. Less so for smaller places in the outer islands of Indonesia, say. I hope that may change in the future, but I am an optimist by nature. :-) Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:06, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

ACTRIAL:

• WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

• Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

• A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

• There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

• Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

• The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
• Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

• A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

• Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
• The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

Deletion discussion survivors

Thank you to those who have participated in portal deletion discussions. There are still some editors out there who despise portals, and this comes across in their argumentation style. Wow. Such negativity. But, there is some good news...

• Portal:Quidditch survived its 2nd deletion nomination
• Portal:Prehistory of Antarctica did the same

Portal space clean up

While portal detractors are trying to get rid of portals via MfD, we have deleted many of them via speedy deletion (per {{Db-p1}} or {{Db-p2}}). Essentially, they were bare skeletons, with maybe a little meat on them. The plus here is that speedy deletion is without prejudice to re-creating the portals. They can easily be restarted from scratch without getting approval, or be undeleted by request by someone willing to work on them. We have kept track of these, for when someone wants to rebuild them. They are listed at Portal talk:Contents/Portals#These are not listed yet.

We are also removing subpages, the functions of which have been migrated to portal base pages. To see which ones have been removed, look for the redlinks in our watchlist.

There is also an MfD concerning some of these at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Redundant subpages of the Cornwall portal.

For subpages that need to be deleted, you can conveniently place this speedy deletion template at the top of each of them:

{{Db-g6|rationale=of subpage clean up – this subpage's function has been migrated to the portal base page and is no longer needed}}

Then an admin will come along and delete them.

Please help list the unlisted portals!

There are still 100 existing portals not yet presented on the main portal list at Portal:Contents/Portals. There were 400, so we've come a long way. Thank you! But we are not done yet...

Please list a couple of them. Every little bit helps. If each member of this project listed one more, it would almost all be done. Many hands make light work.

GA/FAC Reviewing

I think your point about subject expertise is a good one and since it's not exactly germane to that review thought I'd respond to my thoughts here. Just how much knowledge I should have before starting a GA review is one I've struggled with. This particular review felt the furthest outside my comfort zone simply because not only had I not heard of it, there was a great likelihood of there being local knowledge around the topic that I would have no way of knowing was missing. I'm glad you popped in. But there is a struggle because this page had been waiting for a reviewer for more than 6 months (221 days). At a certain point it seems like the encyclopedia benefits from having someone give a good faith effort to review rather than it sitting in purgatory forever and so I end up reviewing an article that is outside my expertise zone. FAC has the advantage of many eyes in a way that GA doesn't. I really do wish more WikiProject members would step up when an article is nominated for GA in their area to provide that sort of expertise. Archibald Erskine Smith?

I am currently trying to research Archibald Erskine as connection to Erskine Link in East Perth but at the moment I am finding a lot of articles on Trove for an Archibald Erskine Smith.

Is this the same Archibald Erskine? One article I have started reading through states that he was a mining broker and in parts of North America he was known as "Coolgardie Smith" and classed as a Soldier of Fortune.

649 covers all mainland tribes, as far as I can check. So that's done. If I've missed any group and you notice, drop me a note. The Tasmanians are 48 ethnic units, but the destruction was so profound there's hardly any chance of making any article on individual groups as far as I can see, so that just leaves fixing the Tasmanians, one article. Mitch

Of course he is well-intentioned, but these mass-edits on this subject are usually disastrous. I still haven't forgotten the particularly big fiasco of his move into political parties, such removing parties with WA and NSW representation from the national category because they were categorised in Victoria (but not in the states with MPs). Finding an article categorised in a parent and a child category might mean that it can be simply removed - or it might mean that there is a category issue which needs to be discussed, in the latter case which randomly removing the parent often leads to stupid outcomes. In any case, Mitch needs to think about what he has found, then act - and absolutely stop removing the parent in all circumstances.

Very often in these cases the answer is that Mitch has found the sort of category issue that means a discussion needs to be had - so perhaps, if I keep reverting his mass-moves where they lead to stupid outcomes, he will do that first, instead of only after being reverted.

I don't know what should happen here: all suburbs are currently in the city suburbs cat (unless they have their own suburb-specific category), and the random category for the City of Swan is an outlier. It might be that you create another category structure for suburbs-by-LGA, which may or not diffuse the main city suburbs category. It might be that you delete the City of Swan category. It might be that some other option is better. I don't particularly have a preference there. But randomly burying all the suburbs of the City of Swan (I had trouble even finding the category amidst the long lists of suburb-specific categories - and I knew what I was looking for!) because Mitch's instant response is to delete the parent is the worst of these potential outcomes. No disagreement here. I think this stuff needs to get actually discussed out a lot more than it currently does, but it's hard to get people to care about categorisation issues outside of their immediate focus of interest, so difficult to do more than hash out the local issues when they arise. (Though I will say more generally that this is an area where I wish everyone would stop unilaterally rearranging the place: the most logical category structures we've established have been the ones where we actually worked out a sensible way to organise things.) Thanks for your initial response to the edits, (with a question), rather than an 'Undo' and an angry comment. I'm just getting rid of the (8000+) error messages that are produced in the system since they no longer recognize the parameter.
