Managing a conflict of interest
editHello, Jason.e.stewart. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page 12 Characters in Search of an Apocalypse: On the Road, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Jmertel23 (talk) 16:29, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hiya, thanks for pointing this out. I added the COI before I created the page, just in case, because I am connected with it but not in any monetary manner. I am an upaid director of a Community Interest Company in Wales, Giraffe Social Enterprises. I have not published any information about GSE on Wikipedia. The 12 Characters on the Road is an unpaid travelling show that invites local groups to discuss the consequences of the climate emergency with one another - all of the work is available for free to anyone for download so they can do the work themselves. I'm not the author of 12 Characters, that would be Andrew Boyd, and he and I have no relation to one another. So I'm pretty sure there isn't any violations of the letter or spirit of any Wikipedia guidelines - if there's something I've overlooked, please let me know. Grazi... - @Jason.e.stewart: Thanks for following up. I'm glad to hear you are not receiving payment for your contribution to this article - thank you. I'm guess I'm confused as to the nature of your connection - you openly stated you have a conflict of interest, but now say there is no conflict? Can you please clarify? Also - if you have no relation to the author, how is it that you have listed " Private communication from author" as a source? (Please also note that "private communication" counts as original research and is therefore not a valid source). Thank you in advance for further clarifying. Jmertel23 (talk) 17:26, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
- Sure, happy to do what's needed. Adding the COI notice to my page seemed necessary because I was directly connected with the roadshow - not because it was a source of income. Perhaps that was unnecessary? About the private communication - he and I have emailed one another quite a few times over the years and we met once in Washington, DC in 2018. Otherwise we have no connection - neither relatives nor friends nor working companions. Is that helpful? I've gone ahead and published the email Andrew wrote and added a link to that instead. I can understand that original research is not allowed, thanks. Jason.e.stewart (talk) 17:41, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
