Please take this as just a constructive criticism. The tesseract you created isn't as easy to understand as this one, as yours is rotating in two ways, but this picture is obviously inferior in quality to yours. Unessesary reflections?

Hey Jason, I absolutely love your pretty pictures of 4D stuff. I can't stop staring at them. However, I just noticed that the opaque planes connecting the lines and points of said objects have reflections in them. I was trying to understand the 24-cel, and it was when I looked at the hypercube when I realized there was a lot of relection going on. The reflection no doubt looks cool, but I think this is a case of form inhibiting function, which , as far as I'm concerned, should never happen. If looking cool affects the scientific (or whatever) information one can derive about 4D objects, well, it's simply not a good thing. Could you perhaps make a 24-cel without the reflections just to see what it looks like?

POTD cancellation

Hi Jason,

It has come to my attention that your Featured Picture Image:Tesseract.gif no longer appears in the Tesseract article. It seems to me that if it's not good enough for the article of its subject, then it probably shouldn't be a Featured Picture either. Accordingly, I've canceled its POTD appearance and have nominated it to be replaced by one of the other two tesseract animations you have in the article. Hey, i really like what you do, but i'm a little confused. I know 3DS max and maya quite well, but I have no clue how you do those pictures. Do you use a plugin of some sorts or do you fake the rotation by applying transformations on your model? To accomplish this in Maya, I actually set up a MEL script for each cluster that serves as a vertex. The MEL scripts were rather similar, and differed only in what initial x, y, z, and w I associated with them. The rotation and the projection were done completely with code.

It is portrayed in a slightly distorted manner: when the convex hull of the 3-dimensional projection is octahedral, the vertices which only have edges on the octahedral shell should draw together, thus flattening the octahedral convex hull, then back apart, and then stop while the convex hull is hexagonal bipyramidal. [1]

Unfortunately my Stella4D is a jealous god, and only imports 4OFF, won't export its polytopes. I could generate VE data quickly for most of the uniform polychora, any format, but I don't have time to add faces for now. Since I obtained the ability to render any shape I can get a VEF file of I did new renders of all 6 polytopes with a new material. I'm sorry to hear you do not like the new version... which aspects of the original did you prefer? JasonHise (talk) 20:28, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well just scroll down here and look at the difference between the thumbnails for the current and original versions. The new version doesn't even work as a gif. You can also see it on my user page, where it now appears as a static and uninteresting image (at least on a Mac using Firefox). --Epipelagic (talk) 09:20, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
The lack of animating is cause by some bug/limitation in the resizing algorithm uses in the wiki engine - SO larger files only animate if sized to the original resolution. I'm unsure how to describe the limitation/failure/bug, but in this case the old file was 625k, and new one 3meg. On the quality, perhaps the old images should be restored if they are different and considered better in ways, and new images uploaded with a separate file name? I agree with Tom that some of the older version should be there as well. Why not retain your new and more sophisticated versions as you want them, but reinstate, under modified names, the older versions which, at smaller sizes, both animate and display more elegantly, particularly the 8-cell? --Epipelagic (talk) 00:07, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I see this thread which explains quite a bit but I had left a post at Commons:File talk:8-cell.gif concerning the broken animation when resized before seeing this. I wouldn't upload any new versions of animated gifs until this is resolved somehow. I was asked to fix a broken gif on a userpage which led to this.
