Historical Fiction

edit

Nice edit. I had written that a long while ago and didn't quite like the way it sounded, but I couldn't for the life of me make it sound any better on my own. That's exactly the point I was trying to get across. At the time Historical Fiction had been redirected toward Historical Novel, which indicated that in order for it to be Historical Fiction it had to be a book. I just wanted to try to expand the term past that. I hadn't intended for the article to become a list of random books and authors but that seems to have snowballed on it's own.

The only reason I used the numbered citations is that I'm a fan of formatted citations, and if they're the citations I used I may have been paraphrasing those cites so I thought citing them in the text was relevant. I guess unformatted footnotes could be used, but we'd have to be careful to avoid plagiarism. Hewinsj (talk) 19:42, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Persuasion by Jane Austen

edit

Jbeans, from an edit you did a long time ago, is there any chance you have the isbn for the book? It is this ref Le Faye, Deirdre (1998). Jane Austen. New York: Oxford University Press. p. 90. in Persuasion (novel). I have hunted about, finding other books by Deirdre Le Faye, but not one published in 1998 by Oxford University Press with the title just those two words. There is a fourth edition printed in 2011 of Jane Austen's Letters, indicating first edition in 1997 by OUP, but that might not be the book you cited. I hunted for the isbn for her 2003 book, which I found; WorldCat says that it was published that year by Frances Lincoln of London, so I added that information to the citation. I hate bothering you, as you are pretty much the only person to add reliable sources to that article, in all these years. --Prairieplant (talk) 07:53, 5 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Prairieplant, Your request is certainly not a bother---in fact it's a treat to hear from one who is making such fine improvements to the article of my very favorite novel by my very favorite writer! But indeed it's been a while since I have been stalking the JA articles. Regrets, I do not have the book nor isbn you asked about; I vaguely remember consulting the Jane Austen Letters volume by Le Feye---which I (must have) borrowed from the local library---but not the book you are chasing. I note from perusing the History file that the reference was apparently not my post---instead it was by Rborgo on 21 October 2014. Unfortunately, he/she hasn't posted for a while. Would I could be of more info, but pls try me again if you think so. Thanks for your good work, and Best Regards. Jbeans (talk) 19:42, 5 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Ah Jbeans it is my favorite book by my favorite author as well. Thanks so much for your reply, and your work to find the right person. I put a message on Rborg's talk page, can only hope that person will do some more work on Wikipedia soon enough. I thought you did it, from reading the Talk page for the article, instead of looking at the article history, which is the more logical thing to do. I did add a quote on the article's Talk page regarding over 7 years, 8 years, 8.5 years ago in the novel. The novel begins by saying over 7 years ago Anne met Frederick, then when Anne is with her married sister in the late autumn and meets him in person, Anne says 8 years ago, and in the letter Frederick writes to her in the hotel in the early spring (which I quoted out of the Project Gutenberg copy) he says 'eight and a half years ago when you broke my heart'. Time marches on through the story. Thanks for checking to find the actual editor who added that reference. --Prairieplant (talk) 12:00, 6 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

House of Plantagenet

edit

Hi Beans, thought I would take this conversation here. Whatever the rights or wrongs of your debate with Ealdgyth, and she can be a right pain, your edits don't belong in this article. This is dynastic rather than a general history and the consensus has always been amongst a lot of editors that only information about the family, their actions and their impact should be included. You can see that in the archived talk and the various reviews. Now your edits might make more sense in England in the Late Middle Ages. Btw, you can also see in the talk of this article the accepted way of attributing copying text between articles, which I expect Ealdgyth would have acknowledged. Norfolkbigfish (talk) 14:07, 23 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Norfolkbigfish, I am Jbeans---thank you for your response.
Please let me be clear on a key point: I am not "debating" with Ealdgyth; nor with anyone else at Wikipedia; nor am I willing to. Instead I am looking for discussion with her. I have been a debater; there are rules and behaviours to maintain honesty and mutual respect among the participants. I am not willing to indulge in what passes for "debating" at Wikipedia---it is typically sophomoric and disrespectful of other editors and other editors' work; and it is always unprofessional. It doesn't advance the purposes of Wikipedia, nor the quality of work-product, nor the quality of working conditions, at Wikipedia as much as it impedes.
"High-schooling" at Wikipedia is not more than a 'drive-by' rejecting of other people's work without regard to its content---or as to whether the edit is from a vandal or a newbie; or even perhaps from another editor who could (perhaps) be as competent even as some members the "debate team". (IMO, even vandalism doesn't justify projecting low standards of treating with other people or with their efforts and feelings as a good-faith editor.) Time is precious, and shorter than we think; wasting people's time and good will---whether personally or writ large, as at Wikipedia, is very poor policy. Dissing first, then deprecating another editor's work, and then dismissing their contribution outright---as unworthy even of discussion---is extremely destructive of Wikipedia's prospects for the future.
Unfortunately, any editor's unwillingness to discuss, combined with a strategy to 'destroy-by-debate' rather than discuss, wastes (a great deal of) time, collegiality, and opportunity for consensus at Wikipedia---typically with complete disregard of the damage by members of the "debate team". //Jbeans (talk) 23:49, 26 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
