Maps

edit

Why is it necessary to have two maps showing identical things on some hurricane pages? What's wrong with the ones we already have there? --Golbez 21:58, July 16, 2005 (UTC)

It's not necessary to have duplicate maps, but neither does it hurt anything. Some of the maps I uploaded show a larger area than the existing tracks, but others may be spurious. Since I was adding the maps as a batch I added them to all articles even if there was already a (slightly different) map there. Jdorje 22:15, 16 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Adobe pictures

Is there a way to upload a picture from a pdf file onto Wikipedia? I have found this fantastic image of Hurricane David hours short of peak intensity here: [1] on page 9. Better yet, it is a NOAA photo, and therefore in the public domain.

Convert them to PNG before you upload. Jdorje

I don't know how to convert a PDF to a PNG.

E. Brown, Hurricane enthusiast - Squawk Box 22:03, 1 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Well, you could...take a screenshot. But there has to be a better way. Jdorje 02:03, 28 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Template:HurricaneActive

edit

Is there any way to restore the colors of the original table onto the template to clearly ensure that the effective time, the "As of:" and the category stands out?

BTW the color scheme for each category should be:

Extratropical
Tropical depression
Tropical storm
Category 1 hurricane
Category 2 hurricane
Category 3 hurricane
Category 4 hurricane
Category 5 hurricane

CrazyC83 20:01, 23 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hmm. Well, I didn't take the colors away (I just copied the table as-is from the article to the template) - someone changed the table form to an infobox form which is without colors. I don't know if there's a way to get colors back without getting rid of the infobox form. Also, I didn't realize the color was supposed to correspond to the category - but that's really cool, the only potential problem is with typhoons which use a different scheme. However, I'm not sure how to get it back into the template cleanly, but I suspect it is possible. Maybe with CSS or some other tool we can associate color "category4" with "orange". Finally, the above table should be a template (it's included all over the place now, right?) and we also need to find a way to get the same color scheme into the other templates (like the infobox hurricane template). Okeechobee Storm

edit

Is that right? Wow! 4075. Where did you get that number? I'd like to see it. I'd always known the total as 3,411. This must have come out of a more detailed analysis of the apocalyse the storm caused on Puerto Rico.

Hurricane project

I'd just like to commend you on the incredible job you're doing with expanding the hurricane database. You've created more than good quality articles on hurricanes that have been needing them for a long time, Indianola and 1947 off the top of my head. Also, I know the best places to find sat photos for the infobox. I'd upload them myself, but I don't have an account in Wikimedia Commons and have never figured out the Wikipedia uploading system.

Sounds great. I've been meaning to get off my ass and do something. I am facinated by hurricanes. I've bragged about some of my related accomplishments in Wikipedia and independently on Hurricanehink's talk page.

Hey, I'm not here to argue. I'm taking info from UNISYS, which get their plots from the NHC best track file. Also, that list you gave me lists Frederic as a 3 at landfall. No way that's right. UNISYS has it as a Cat. 4 inland nearly to Hattiesburg. UNISYS can be wrong, but they're not that wrong.

Don't you wish official sources would agree on a conclusion instead of making life so difficult. :)
E. Brown, Hurricane enthusiast - Squawk Box 23:46, 5 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

When you say some of the lists need to be "complimented or replaced by catagories", what do you mean?

E. Brown, Hurricane enthusiast - Squawk Box 00:57, 6 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

I don't think we need a rubric so strict that we chain ourselves to the wall. We need to have some flexability in that structure so that interesting facts are not omitted. It would be easy for that to happen with such a tight structure.

Great New England Hurricane

edit

70 mph! God damn! No wonder it killed 600 people. Jesus! That's unheard of. Where did you read that, that may be a record forward speed for an Atlantic tropical cyclone?

E. Brown, Hurricane enthusiast - Squawk Box 00:12, 6 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

No argument here. That Wikipedia entry sounds a little suspect to me, as Wikipedians have a general reputation for being over-the-top.

Hurricane Gordon (1994)

edit

I'm very glad you liked my article I created on this storm. It was definitely needed... I mean, 1,145 people dead?! I say it's as noteworthy as Katrina, which I unfortunately experienced firsthand (I live 40 miles north-northwest of New Orleans). I added the infobox to the article like you suggested. I'm still learning how to work on everything on this site. This was my very FIRST article, and it took a lot of guess and check and research. PenguinCDF 06:15, 8 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

I should ask... you updated my article to say that Gordon performed a cyclonic loop off the coast of North Carolina, but the 1994 Atlantic hurricane season page states it was an anticyclonic loop. I admit, I'm a bit stupid :) so I don't know the difference. Which page is correct? PenguinCDF 07:22, 8 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
Ah, the first loop (and more complete loop) is cyclonic (counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere). Just updated the 1994 season page. PenguinCDF 07:38, 8 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
Upon further analysis of the track (and my being more awake now), it performed the cyclonic loop within an anticyclonic loop, so I clarified that in the article. PenguinCDF 14:11, 8 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Pictures

edit

I'm damned sick of not being able to upload pictures. This makes a grand total of no sence whatsoever. I go to the upload page, do everything I'm told to do (cite source, copyright info and whatnot) click "Upload" and nothing happens. It is so frustrating because I have all these good pictures and can't contribute them because I am clearly not smart enough to devine what quest the stupid page wants me to undertake before I can upload the picture. Let's start with a general question, what is supposed to happen when I click "Upload"?

E. Brown, Hurricane enthusiast - Squawk Box 22:14, 6 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Do I have to have a seperate account for Wikimedia Commons. The last time I tried to login there it said my password and user name were incorrect.
E. Brown, Hurricane enthusiast - Squawk Box 23:02, 6 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
All right, I got a picture uploaded and am trying to put it in the Hurricane Audrey infobox, but the formatting is screwing with me. [[Image:]] and |250px|center| and the caption are still displaying and I don't know how to make that go away.
E. Brown, Hurricane enthusiast - Squawk Box 23:41, 6 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
I uploaded an image unassited: Hurricane Pauline. I can be taught! :D Thanks for unconfusing me.
E. Brown, Hurricane enthusiast - Squawk Box 00:04, 7 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
I added a few images. I'd swear there was a picture there once for Hurricane Alicia. Check the history.

Fair Use

edit

I just uploaded this picture of Hurricane Hugo as a Category 5. It probably originally came from NOAA, which means it would be free licence, but it came directly from UNISYS, which is copyrighted but their copyright page states:

Authorization is hereby provided to you to copy documents published by Unisys Corporation on the World Wide Web provided such copies are used for non-commercial purposes and solely for use within your organization. This authorization is specifically conditioned upon including all legends, copyright, proprietary and other notices which appear herein on all copies you make of such documents whether they pertain to Unisys Corporation or another party.

Which it is. Is that fair use, or otherwise legal?

Hurricane categories

edit

Hello! I think that it's important to add "history" or "country" categories to hurricanes, but we should distinguish it. If some hurricane affect country X in bigger scale, we should add category about country X. But if this hurricane only pass peacefuly through country Y, we should not add country Y category here. I think that you are welcomed to add guidelines for this categorization to WikiProject (my English is not so good). I have had a lot of free time this weekend so I added them to some hurricanes, but now I am back at college, so my contributions will be weaker. Third, I am using categories "History of country X" in that case, if there are at least a few articles to put it there (look at Category:History of Nicaragua). In case of Guadeloupe it would be useless, cause there would be only 1-2 articles there. Thank you for your message. Leave me another, so we can prepare better guidelines. You are always welcomed to add these categories to hurricane articles. - Darwinek 11:24, 10 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

How is that construction critism? That is more like politcally activism? What are you totally out of touch? That would not be constructive critism to the NHC. If I worked at the NHC I would gladly take any constructive critism to see what I can do and what my colleagues could do and tell my managers and everyone who funds my organzation to get their act together. For it's my job to make sure I give accurate information to save lives. Instead of marshing it around politics. User:tdwuhs

TD 24

edit

Heya Jdorje, you'll be better off talking to V. Molotov about TD24, he seems to think an article is needed. You also ought to note this article was also "Hurricane Wilma" and "Tropical Storm Wilma". -- NSLE | Talk 04:28, 17 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

There is no need for an article that is just a stub that has the exact same information that's in the season article. I changed it to be a redirect into the season article. Note that these have the *exact same data*, so duplicating them in both places will have the exact opposite effect from what I imagine you intend - it will make it harder for people to get updated information about the storm...or write new information about the storm. Take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. Jdorje 04:34, 17 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
You are correct...thanks for informing me. Lately, it seems I have been doing a whole bunch of crazy things. File:Smilie.gifMolotov (talk)

Thanks. Will stop rv-ing his edits, although I'm not too happy about being listed at WP:VIP and being accused of using a sockpuppet IP. I suppose you and the others could do the reverting though. -- NSLE (Communicate!) <Contribs> 06:13, 22 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
