Nepenthes
editThank you for your comment; yes, I know this also, having spent many years in the United States. I've listened to some of the online pronunciation guides since raising this issue, and they all seem to begin with "nip" - I've never actually heard anyone pronouncing it this way outside of an online dictionary, which is rather vexing. The OED pronunciation guide on the iPod hasn't got IPA, but pronounces it in perfect RP as Nə-penthes, which at least lets me know that I'm not delusional.
I'm afraid that there's probably not much you can do without persuading one of the Wikipedia IPA folk who hold all the strings to anything pronunciation-related. I suppose it's understandable that they're generally controlling, and much of what they do is truly excellent, it's just not always necessarily correct! Attenboroughii (talk) 18:01, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
- Hi! Yes, I suppose you're right, and besides, we're famous as a country for our unilateralism! Perhaps it would be easier if we all learned and tried to pronounce in Latin; then it'd be nɛˈpɛnθɛs and there'd be no issues at all ;) Jeljen (talk) 18:15, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
