IP edit on Government

The large addition to the Government article was in fact from the Simple English Wikipedia: simple:Government. So in some sense it was a copyright violation since it was copied without proper attribution. I always try to use Google to find copyright violations in large additions of text. Jung Myung Seok

I am new to Wikipedia but seek to make sure the informamtion is correct. According to BPL (SIC?) rules any information that is unsourced or of a dubious source is to be removed. In the article Jung Myong Seok I take issue with citations 11, 12, and 13.

11 Is attributed to a French sociologist Ms Nathalie Luca. Problem is the citiation page does not support the claim that JMS was a member of the Unification Church. Additionally there is an out of place British flag on the top of the citation page which does not fit CNRS country of orgin--- France. Therefore, I do not only doubt the authenticity of the citation but it does nothing to support the claim made in the body of the article.

12-- Citation leads to a link titled Radio Australia with 5 poorly written sentences that describe a supposed historical timeline. The article has no reference to primary sources AND does not even have a listed author. It gives me the impression that someone robbed a page from Radio Australia and wrote whatever suited their needs. Furthermore, the information contradicts what was written in paragraph 3 of the JMS article. Mr Jung was not fleeing justice but was carrying out missionary trips. The sentence associated with this citation clearly portrays Mr Jung as a criminal on the run. This is a shameful act of intellectual dishonesty and it is travesty to leave this libelous information posted with an inadequate citation.

13 The citation link is no longer available and can not be used to verify the statement in the body of the article. What accusations reached other countries and why was he investigated by Taiwanese authorities? The answer is not stated in the wikipedia article but the implication is that he committed sexual assault or some similar crime in other countries. These 3 sentences( associated with citation 12 and 13) flow with the clear intent to slander Mr Jung without 1 single properly referenced source.

Please remove this slander and libel from Wikipedia that the truth may be known.

I reverted your edits as you did not explain why you removed the text. I would tend to agree with your removal. I would suggest next time you explain your removal in the edit summary or others will likely undo your edits. Mike Richman redirect

Hey, Jim! Thanks for keeping an eye on the 3O page, but Sajoch was actually following the directions for listing a 3O. They're normally signed with only a timestamp, no username. It's supposed to help reduce any prejudging of the issue on the part of us volunteers; there might be a natural tendency to take a side based on who listed the dispute. Just wondering why the external link for Solent fuchsia Club was removed? You have stated that it is not a notable club. What factors have you considered when arriving at this conclusion? The Solent Fuchsia Club has been established for 40 years and is affiliated to the British Fuchsia Society. I would be most grateful if you would please consider reinstating the link.

The way it should be setup is that Solent Fuchsia Club should have its own article in Wikipedia. Then a Wikilink from [{Fuchsia]] would be linked by the code [[Solent Fuchsia Club]]. The Solent Fuchsia Club article could then have an external link to the society. So, none of those external links to fuchsia clubs should be there per wp:el. I.e. they are spam and should be removed. (non-commercial spam) The other clubs do appear to be non-local, and likely of more interest to Wikipedia readers in general.

If the Solent Fuchsia Club is notable (I personally have my doubts), I would suggest you write an article. This can be a difficult task. I would suggest creating it in your sandbox as creating it as an article directly is likely to result in rapid deletion. I good location might be User:Steve Bass Ellis/Solent Fuchsia Club. Click on that link and create it there. Put a link to the article on your user page User:Steve Bass Ellis for your easy access: use the code [[/Solent Fuchsia Club]] on your user page. You can copy the code of a similar article to your article (in part or whole). You can also copy/follow/peruse similar articles, especially wp:good articles. Wikipedia standards would include wp:notablity, encyclopedic tone, not sounding like an advertisement, etc. When you are fairly certain that it meets Wikipedia standards, you can submit it to wp:afc. Or, wp:boldly move it to the article space (beware of sudden deletion here). I am not much for creating articles, but I would be willing to help where I can. Re this edit of yours:

• What convinces you he was born in 1962? You don't provide any evidence, just your unsupported assertion.

I've highlighted the relevant dates, to prove it was not a typo.

As it is now, we have an article saying Kogosowski was born in 1962, supported by a source that says 1952. Not exactly an ideal circumstance.

Sorry about that, I did a google search and google sez 1962. I did check another article, but looking back, it may have been a copy of Wiki. I undid my edit, might want to try to report the problem to google. Also, might want to put a comment around the date to alert other users of the google issue. As there is a easily found, but unreliable source (google), I would avoid calling it vandalism per WP:NOTVAND. It would likely have been in good faith per WP:AGF. Thanks for the note. Thanks for the quick response, Jim. There’s been subtle vandalism going on since 2009. When I wrote the article in 2008, all I had was a birth year, 1952. It’s not clear now exactly where I got that bit of info from. But I knew it was right because I saw Kogosowski when he first came to national attention in 1966, on the TV talent show "BP Showcase 66". He was aged around 13 or 14 then, so 1952 fitted that nicely. (I was aged only 15 myself). He was certainly not aged 3 or 4, as a 1962 birth would have meant. I've been sort of following his career ever since, which is why I decided to write his article in the first place.

Someone has subtly edited out the inconvenient year 1966 from BP Showcase. (AGF: They must have assumed it was an error.)

On 12 August 2009, an anonymous editor removed the year 1952. They also removed the specific mention of his Polish heritage, replacing it with "European". If Kogosowski ain't a Polish name, I’m a monkey’s uncle. But I let it slide at that time, because I couldn’t prove 1952 was correct.

On 9 January 2011, Frania Wisniewska restored 1952. The Polish heritage bit was now back in.

In March 2011, unregistered User:Rapidclick removed both these pieces of information once more, again with no explanation ([1], [2] et al).

On 21 December 2011, I added the exact date 22 December 1952, from his mother’s memoir, which I provided as the source.

Despite that, on 9 March 2012, an anon removed the date, with no explanation. I managed to miss that edit.

On 17 September 2012, I noticed the above edit and I restored the date.

Now today we’ve had more unexplained removals. And the sudden appearance of 1962. To a previously uninvolved editor such as yourself, the google evidence might seem to support 1962. But the pitfalls of google are legion. -- Jack of Oz ^[Talk] 08:57, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately in the time I allow myself to verify many things, I do introduce errors. Hopefully less than I remove. I added a comment to Alan Kogosowski which is only visible when editing re the 1962 problem. If you search on "Alan Kogosowski" in google, you can click on the feedback on the box. Also, if someone adds content that you find dubious, feel free to undo it and request a source. WP:V is the responsibility of the person adding the content, not the one questioning. Thanks Jim. "Keeping an eye on the article" - are you not aware I wrote the original version, and did virtually all the legwork in providing the current content and all the references?

The correct birthdate and the reliable source have been there since I added them last December. When others removed the 1952 date from the article and/or replaced it with 1962, the source remained in the References, for anyone who cared to read it. I guess my concern is that you would go straight to google and accept blindly whatever it says, completely ignoring the reliable source I provided, which is far more credible than anything else, because it's his own mother.

It makes me wonder what's the point of doing any decent research, if it can so easily be ignored and/or overridden. For me, as the original author of the article, and not knowing you from a bar of soap, it looked like just more of the mindless vandalism that's been happening on and off for 3 years. That was because you simply asserted in your edit summary that 1962 was correct, but without a shred of evidence. Not good practice; the sort of thing a troll/vandal would do. The anonymous people who had previously removed 1952 also did so without a shred of evidence or explanation. I braced myself for another shit fight with a vandal.

I probably ruin more peoples' days then most. I don't block them, but I do request the block. Doesn't that make me evil? Hadn't scrolled down far enough on the Alan Kogosowski edit history to see you as the page creator. Good to talk to a real editor! I suspect that the day of the anonymous IP editor is limited. It is getting to the point where if it sounds good, I'll not question/revert it. I use wp:huggle and the new edits scroll off the screen faster than I can review them. The Alan Kogosowski article has it easy. Try American Third Position Party and this edit to the talk page diff Someone on Foursquare encourages vandalism on Wikipedia and I spend the next hour with rapid fire vandalism reverts. Likely reverting valid edits as well. My advice is to undo dubious unsourced edits with little remorse. Eyes needed

Could use some eyes on Australian Christian Lobby, where, like with the article on the American Third Position Party, schills have been trying to portray the movement as they describe themselves. The movement is an over-the-top extreme-right "Christian" organization that is rabidly anti-gay to the point where even other conservative Christian groups in Australia have distanced themselves from it. Kyrgyzstan Time

Hi Jim,

You reverted my addition of the Kyrgyzstan Time UTC offset times on the List of time zone abbreviations page. There is only one time zone, but it covers two offsets. If not doing it the way I did it, how would you do it? Please advise.

Presumably, the code "KGT" would be a single time zone. It would refer to how people set their clocks in that area relative to UTC. Presumably, the purpose is that if one knows where another person is located and the time zone code, then one can easily find the UTC+offset, and a simple calculation would tell you what their watch is set to. If the code were to cover two different offsets, then things would be confusing.

If you look on List of time zone abbreviations, you can see there are no other double entries. A google search on KGT and timezone shows UTC+05 *and* UTC+06. But, websites don't show both offsets on the same page, suggesting some confusion. Looking at the time zone map, and UTC+06:00 I would say that Kyrgyzstan is entirely UTC +06. Various sites on location: +06 http://www.prokerala.com/travel/timezones/Kirgizstan_Time +06 (spam filter flagged this one) +05. If there is another timezone in Kyrgyzstan, it should have a different code. If the area is not significant, it may be a code not associated with Kyrgyzstan itself. The map does not have any area that is not +06 that I can discern.

I had set Kyrgyzstan time to UTC+05, but just corrected it to UTC+06. Hopefully, that is the correct timezone. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 00:33, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

According to Kyrgyzstan Time, there are two time offsets. For instance, Kara-Suu District isn't following the rest of the country. Given that the Kara-Suu District is a relatively small area, I would think it unlikely they have a special code; unless there is something unusual such as daylight savings time. This page [4] seems to have it as +06, not +05. Does not give the offset, but it has the same time as Bishkek. There could be some transition or disagreement concurring. False positive of anti-vandalism?

Hi, Jim1138. There might be false positive cases of anti-vandalism. You recently reverted my edits of Template:DecreasePositive and Template:IncreaseNegative. The two didn't have any documentation, so I created one with {{documentation}}, and wrote "{{documentation}}" in the summary.

My edits in fact deleted the category and interlang links from the template pages themselves, but they're instead contained in the doc pages, so there's no problem. You could have easily understood it if you had actually visited the page, but I guess the deletion was done automatically by "HG", which I've never tried. Could some measure be taken?

Hi Jim:

I live in Long Branch. Over the past few days, I have seen numerous rubbish edits being made to the Wikipedia page about it, by some person who prefers not to use a name. I decided to revert these edits when they stopped appearing. This morning, I noticed that you had reverted them, which pleased me, but now I see that he (or maybe she) has reverted your reversion, and added more rubbish. I was afraid this would happen.

Is there anything we can do to stop this abuse?

External link for British Museum

Hi, You recently removed a link that i posted in external links for the British Museum. can you tell me why? The 360 views are pictures, not an app (though java may be requried). While the app may not have a price, I nor other editors have the time nor necessarily the qualifications to determine if it is free. A good app probably should be listed on the British Museum's website. Wikipedia editors are probably not qualified nor likely have the time to qualify an app for use: accuracy, quality, malware-free, etc. Having a link on Wikipedia to an app could be construed as an endorsement leading to legal liability. If you feel that it is a high quality app, I would suggest contacting the British Museum.
