Jockey Colours for 1,2,3
editCould you please stop any further additions of jockey colour images for 1, 2, & 3 to existing horse racing articles. Before anyone starts to make changes to multiple articles it is normal practice to explain on the Talk page what your intentions are and to seek the opinions of other members of the project.
- Is it your intention to provide these images for all races or just some races?
- Are you only going to provide them for the years 2013 and 2014? If so, why?
- What is your connection to jockeycolours.com
- Are you providing these images to promote the website?
Please reply on the Talk page. Thank you. Cuddy Wifter (talk) 07:36, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
Champion Hurdle
editI have used the colours you supplied in the new articles 2011 Champion Hurdle, 2012 Champion Hurdle, 2013 Champion Hurdle and 2014 Champion Hurdle. I think they look good in the infoboxes. Thanks.21:40, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
Would you be able to take a look at the Champion Hurdle article? Binocular's colours in 3rd place look a different shade to the ones shown for is win. Thanks. --Bcp67 (talk) 11:38, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the message. I think the yellow ones shown in the 2011 1st place are more like the current version, so I'd say go with that. Mind you colours vary don't they - I remember the ones Baracouda carried had much wider yellow hoops than the ones normally seen over here. Keep going with the colours by the way, I think they are a really good addition to the race articles, and must be tricky to do - I know I couldn't do it! --Bcp67 (talk) 14:21, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
Do you take requests?
editWould you consider doing up colors for USA-based stables? One article that would benefit from an image would be Calumet Farm - which had "old" historic "devil's red and blue" silks that were sold when the farm's original owners went belly-up, and the "new" black with gold striped ones of Brad M. Kelley, the current owner. Another one I've been working on is Reeves Thoroughbred Racing. Thanks. Montanabw(talk) 17:20, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
- @Montanabw: Not sure if I should reply here or whether I should reply on your Talk page? Anyway, here goes ...
I am still not yet clear what the format of "single colour" images should be. With your help I think the 1-2-3 images now fit well on the pages, but with only one set of colours the image is much too tall and thin. Attached are my attempts to rework for a single set of colours. As you can see I have included the colours description, primarily to fill up some space, but also because I feel that this largely ignored form of poetry deserves exposure too! I realise I may be in a minority of one in believing this, so any suggestions regarding how best to organise the components in the single image are most welcome. Of course, even if I wasn't puzzling over what format to use, I would still be severely tested by the much greater complexity of the US colours. The (scandalous) restrictions on UK patterns/colours make generating images fairly straightforward but the idiosyncracies of US colours mean that many will need to be indivually crafted. Scary! Fortunately I'd had a go at Mucho Macho Man before when experimenting with the Breeders Cup in 2012, and the Calumet Farm is fairly standard... (JockeyColours (talk) 22:42, 20 March 2014 (UTC))

- I think you are having way too much fun! Let's play around with these parameters some more! Also: Can you also whip up the "new" black and gold Calumet colors? (See Oxbow (horse) for example) As for the rest, here are my thoughts: 1) I don't like the three silks in one image, because if you get hit by a truck, then next year I have to chop and swap existing colors, I'd rather use a multiple image parameter - also, say for 2013 Breeders' Cup, perhaps I only want the winners' silks, don't need all three for all 20-katrillion races they now run. 2) I actually PREFER "tall and thin"- the 180 px default for most browsers means something too wide gets scrunched at default size. I would be using these images either under an infobox or as a basic illustration, as shown in my edit here. I also see your idea behind the description, but my thinking is that, because wikipedia is international, the description is better placed in the image file (click on the Reeves image and see how I edited it) so that other languages can be used -- putting it right on the image limits it to English, while having it in the text description allows for a copy and paste (see second image here) and also - and this is VERY important - it can be read by a screen reader so visually-impaired people can get an idea of what it looks like. A common way silks are displayed in the USA is shown here, which is close to square, and thus can be adapted in whichever direction is needed. Montanabw(talk) 02:03, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
Combining images to form 1-2-3
edit- @Montanabw: Clearly I'm not going to convince you on the 1-2-3, and I can see your point (although obviously if I was hit by a bus then Wikipedia would be the least of my worries), so before I get too far down the line perhaps I will need to change my strategy. My concern on the individual owner images is the sheer quantity of image uploading that will need to be done, and also the mechanism I will need to develop to determine whether the image already exists or not. Contrary to your belief that I am enjoying myself, this week has been a bit of a nightmare Wikipedia-speaking, as my attempt to ease the upload process by using Vicuña Uploader led to 100+ images being loaded to Wikipedia (not Commons), and with no Copyright information! Hopefully I have learnt from my mistakes.
Attached are prototypes with individual images. What do you think? (JockeyColours (talk) 08:46, 21 March 2014 (UTC)) The two problems I see with this are:
- (presumably) not possible to use a "multiple image" inside a "multiple image", so some space is lost around the images for padding/frames etc.
- how to name the owner files? I have so far used a "owner" prefix and then the owner name. The alternative would be to name the images using the colours description (remove commas etc), but this would probably make them very difficult to find. The disadvantage of files named by owner is the case when the owner has multiple colours. In such cases I think these will need to be handled manually with additional files created with names such as "owner_JP McManus_blue cap.svg" and then race templates edited accordingly.
But there are also several positives (as previously discussed), so I think we go with it.

- I like it! I changed one example from "footer" to "header" ( see left) which I think will work better for you. Template:Multiple image has lots of parameters to play with. Here are my responses to your comments:
- Use owner name. Least likely thing to change. I think you've got it right. I'm not too worried about white space and padding, keep the images themselves as tight as possible and you'll be fine.
- I see in the existing files that titles like (second colours) are used for owners with multiple silks.
- If someone wants to get more complicated than any of the above, they can use a table and put these "multiple image" things inside a table cell - it's not easy, but it can be done - see what I did in the first section of my user page to pop in all the silly quotes and badges.
- In commons, don't forget to add the category! If everyone else has, you can see at a glance what's been created or not. You can also request file mover rights, so if you want to rename files to be consistent (i.e. Darley silks are already there...) it could work. Over there, perhaps ping User:Pitke, who is a horse person from Finland and quite active on commons, might be able to help you with categorizing everyone else's uploads.
- I'd say there is nothing stopping you from doing the sets of three for your own work, but for the rest of us, we would either be chopping up your images ourselves or bugging you all the time -- after all do you REALLY want to commit yourself to do EVERY major horse race from the Arc to the Melbourne Cup? Yikes! After year one, there will be a set of all the major players - it will get easier to just fetch the silks in future year! For example, Breeders' Cup 2013 we saw the return of Mucho Macho Man, Trinniberg, Wise Dan, Fort Larned, Mizdirection, Beholder and so on. In 2014, it's a good guess that Phipps will be back, Morton Fink will be back, Darley will be back, Team Valor will be back, Jungle Racing will be back, etc... you see how mix and match will become a time saver that will not depend on you being the person we keep bugging? Silks, once created, are forever... Montanabw(talk) 17:48, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
Single images - best size?
editExperiencing problems with the names wrapping around. Doesn't look good and also adds an extra line. Think I can remove the 1. 2. 3. from the front as that is intuitive, but for names like Imperial Commander and Neptune Collonges it still needs a width of 120px per image. Is that too much?
Something else - I can't get the alt text to work.
Later: Can adjust text size with HTML syntax - small or font & center
Small text seems to solve the problem. Fun to watch this project develop! One comment I have is that when I added an image to Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, it's pretty big, standing alone. Not sure there is a solution, but I notice that most web sites that have silks images tend to make them roughy square. Montanabw(talk) 20:12, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I'm happy with the formatting now, so have started upgrading the Cheltenham pages. One small issue is the (in)visibility of the white cap against the white background!
Regarding the size, I'm aware that racecards etc always reproportion the images (usually by putting the cap in an unnatural place) but they are obviously short of space whereas Wikipedia generally isn't. I do agree that the image on the Reeves page is at first glance a bit big (the 1-2-3 assemblies are better proportioned), but I quickly got used to that (it's not taking space that's needed for something else) and now like it. However, if you have suggestions for resizing/rearranging that you think will make the images more widely used then let me know. (JockeyColours (talk) 21:16, 23 March 2014 (UTC))
- I think you can shave off a little vertical space by making the cap round instead of oval (even though, I admit, most people's heads actually ARE kind of oval). That or make it a half-circle side view, with brim, so it's obviously a cap (as if the jockey was looking to the right or left) The white cap problem can probably be solved by putting a thin black line around it. Not a huge issue, though. It's just cool to have colors done up. BTW, if you could do up the "New" Calumet farms colors to go side by side with the "old" ones (which you've already created) I'd love to add those sets to that article. (The new colors are seen at Oxbow (horse), as well as elsewhere - they are Brad Kelly's colors from when his racing operation was called Bluegrass Hill, should you have trouble finding them under Calumet...) Montanabw(talk) 17:43, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
- @Montanabw: I have added some American colours (apparently Kentucky Derby winners - luckily my US contact is back online!) including those for Bluegrass. The Oxbow colours probably need to be redone with 3 chevrons on the body rather than two, but hope this will do as a start. (JockeyColours (talk) 21:44, 26 March 2014 (UTC))
- @Montanabw: As I see font size mentioned here, I'll respond in this talk discussion. One cannot use small tags inside images. Image text is already smaller than normal text. Adding the small tag brings text to 85% of normal size. With the combination of the two, this drops text size under 75%. I'm unable to read the really small text. Per WP:NOSYMBOLS, text size shouldn't drop below 85%.
- JockeyColours, to bold text, please use wikimarkup. Do not use <b>, but use '''. I really like boxes. Adding it to the articles is a really nice touch. Bgwhite (talk) 07:46, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
- Not INSIDE the images, you've got it OK here. My point there is that no text should be part of the image per interlanguage wikis, and horse names change while colours stay the same for owners, so illogical to put words into an image. The "small" parameter works fine. You also don't need tags for defaults, either. Just showing you what Bgwhite and I mean, see left. Montanabw(talk) 17:10, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
- ok, so I can use "small" (that's a relief - couldn't see an alternative except wider images) but I should convert "b" to Wikipedia syntax (three single quotes). I can live with that. Thanks to you both for your input. (JockeyColours (talk) 17:22, 25 March 2014 (UTC))
- @Montanabw: I must have misspoke. Small tags should not go into the caption of the images. The text in the caption is already "small" and adding the small tag will make the text drop below 75%. There are exceptions. I did remove all the small tags from Arkle Challenge Trophy except one, "Forpadydeplasterer". Removing the small tags there does mess things up to where it is illegible. Of course if Forpadydeplastere were blown to banner size, I still wouldn't be able to pronounce it. You guys didn't add the table in the articles, but you might want to consider removing the small tags there too. The table is at 85%, so it is withing guidelines. Removing the small tags (its actually div tags) would make it easier to read. Bgwhite (talk) 18:18, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
I'm not a syntax expert, so if you want to demonstrate (here or elsewhere) the best way to do this for JockeyColours, I'm in. I just figured he wanted to shrink text so it didn't reap??? Montanabw(talk) 21:23, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Murphy Group Chase
edit- Acroerion, and Anupmehra, how about not WP:BITEing the newbies? It is far better to HELP new people create articles than to go around tag-bombing and running people off. Further, you deleted this less than two hours after nominating it, so how could this user even get notice that it needs to be fixed? Montanabw(talk) 20:48, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- Shame these articles got deleted so quickly, I'd have been happy to expand them as I did with another small article which JockeyColours created for Dominican Republic Handicap Hurdle. I'll keep an eye out for similar things to see if I can save them from deletion. --Bcp67 (talk) 08:42, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help in avoiding "speedy deletion" on the Dom Rep and Irish Daily Mirror pages. I must admit to having felt a bit disillusioned with the whole process when my earlier pages were getting jumped on so quickly. As a result I have created a few "private" pages for other missing races which I would be pleased if you could help me get into shape for future release. Do I need to tell you what they are called or can you find them? Is it possible to restore these deleted pages (although I will need to redo my work in the new format)? (JockeyColours (talk) 12:57, 1 May 2014 (UTC))
- People are sometimes a bit too keen to jump on articles which are being worked on and its a shame if it put you off. You could put the {{newpage}} template on if you have just created a page and want a little bit of breathing space - it should be enough to stop someone sticking a speedy on it. If your in-progress articles are in your user space I can find them by searching for User:JockeyColours/ , I will have a look later on. I don't think its possible to restore deleted pages unfortunately, do you have still copies in your user space or did you move them into article space? Please keep up the good work!! --Bcp67 (talk) 18:00, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

- @Montanabw: I am considering moving away from the multiple image template and using a table format instead.
The disadvantages of the multiple image template are
- The alt/title attribute does not work, so the colour description does not appear on mouseover
- The surrounding box is bigger than necessary
- stacking multiple "multiple image"s results in large gaps between them
- The text formatting is inflexible
On the right you can see the same two races done using a multiple image (top) and two versions of a table (bottom). The first table uses the standard wikipedia template "wikitable", the second does not, which enables the content to be scrunched up so reducing the size slightly. The table formatting could be improved but would add complexity, and the syntax is already more complex than for multiple image.
What do you think? Does the reduction in size, and the addition of the mouseover text justify the possible maintenance overhead introduced by more complex syntax? (JockeyColours (talk) 08:31, 11 April 2014 (UTC))
- I'm not enough of a techie geek to answer this question; both look good and I can see the advantages. I'm going to ping @RexxS: who is my go-to person on templates and charts and ask him to give you advice on which format is better. Montanabw(talk) 23:05, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
You can use templates to hide complexity from the editor. Have a look at the wiki-text here that's generating this table. It should be quite usable by any editor with a few minutes practice or a couple of examples to copy. If you want to use it, just steal it - I have no problem with that. P.S. I've made the name into a table caption to improve accessibility for screen readers. --RexxS (talk) 22:47, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

- @RexxS: That's great, I didn't know creating templates was so easy.
As suggested, I have copied your templates under my own user and will now try to refine them for use everywhere. Many thanks for your help. Later: Is there a delay on updating templates? I make changes and then try to retest immediately and nothing has changed. Later, sometimes much later, I see the revised format! (JockeyColours (talk) 21:06, 13 April 2014 (UTC))
- Yes! When you change a template, the cached version of the page can still be served for some time. The best thing to do is to purge the template page. There's an option in Special:Preferences -> Gadgets tab -> Add a "Purge" tab to the top of the page, which purges the page's cache when followed (or the one that adds a clock as well as purge a little above above). Sometimes you may have to purge your browser's cache: see Wikipedia:Bypass your cache. Hope that helps, --RexxS (talk) 22:06, 13 April 2014 (UTC)
Have I got a challenge for you!
editCan you render these silks? LOL! (Actually I'm serious, see California Chrome) Another set for you to tackle, as I may soon create an article for these people, are these:[1] Let me know if doable/possible or not. Thanks! Montanabw(talk) 23:26, 16 April 2014 (UTC) This one was done for Royal Ascot.
Will have a go at the other one.(JockeyColours (talk) 22:00, 17 April 2014 (UTC))
- Heh, but can you do the BACK of DAP? (with the green donkey? the owners had a graphic designer do up that donkey special... we can get away with this in the states![2] ) Montanabw(talk) 23:39, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
I have added a jacket with the Moose (which way should the moose be facing?) but of course it is shown on the front. Will try to get a back view of the same jacket made up (maybe useful elsewhere too?) so you can display as a front & back pair (JockeyColours (talk) 13:29, 1 May 2014 (UTC))
LOL, that's a donkey, not a moose! But YAY! You've got it right. Can't find anything bigger than here: http://www.kentuckyderby.com/horses/california-chrome Montanabw(talk) 09:23, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Previous Years
editI like the format you're using for colours on articles, with the most recent result shown and the previous years expandable by clicking - looks neat. --Bcp67 (talk) 08:40, 1 May 2014 (UTC) Thanks, I think (after several attempts, and help from other Wikipedia users), I may finally have got it right! I felt that the full expanded list was too invasive, especially on a iPad/tablet, forcing the text content into a narrow column. Now visitors to Wikipedia can only look if they are interested - hopefully they will be.(JockeyColours (talk) 12:52, 1 May 2014 (UTC))
Individual races
editI have been doing articles on individual runnings of the 1000 Guineas eg 2013 1000 Guineas. I have been trying to insert your 1-2-3 images into the infobox, but can't get them to work without messing up the page. Can you take a look please? Tigerboy1966 10:29, 5 May 2014 (UTC) I think for individual races it's easiest to go back to the multiple image format (rather than hack the expand/collapse table). I have applied to the 2013 page. Hope this works for you (JockeyColours (talk) 16:13, 5 May 2014 (UTC))
Have created a new article for the above, if you want to add anything to do it. --Bcp67 (talk) 20:00, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Templates in user space
editPlease don't use templates in your user space inside articles in the main space. Such templates should be in the template namespace. Fram (talk) 12:06, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
- Fram, what are you talking about? @RexxS: and I were helping this user figure out ways to display things, the syntax is cut and paste, is it not? Montanabw(talk) 20:40, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
- When I see very recent edits like this one, where he or she adds {{User:JockeyColours/123Header and so on to an article, then I am telling him or her that user space templates don't belong in mainspace articles. He created today Ascot Stakes, with automatic edit summary Created page with '{{User:JockeyColours/123Header | and so on. No "User X" things should ever appear in the mainspace, that's why I dropped this note. A cursory glance at his edits would have made this clear, I think. Fram (talk) 21:03, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
I have now restored the page content using the Jockey colours header, Jockey colours row etc tags. Is this what I should now be using?(JockeyColours (talk))
- Essentially, Fram would like you to only use templates that have been moved into template: namespace in articles. Once you've made sure that the templates you created in your user space work as you intended, you should move them into template space and then just refer to the template by its name when you use them in articles.
- I see Plastikspork has moved them for you (thank you PS), so you can just use {{Jockey colours header }}, etc. in articles now. In articles like Ballyogan Stakes you should make these sort of replacements:
- {{User:JockeyColours/123Header -> {{Jockey colours header
- {{User:JockeyColours/123CollapsibleHeader -> {{Jockey colours collapsible header
- {{User:JockeyColours/123Row -> {{Jockey colours row
- {{User:JockeyColours/123Footer -> {{Jockey colours footer
- Let me know if you get any problems. --RexxS (talk) 01:14, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks all for solving this. Yes, I have no a priori problems with the templates, I only objected (mildly) to the use of userspace-located templates (or redirects) in mainspace articles. Fram (talk) 06:46, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'm pretty certain that I've caught all the instances now by following "What links here" on the redirect pages. Interesting to see there's actually a report on Wikipedia:Database reports/Transplanted user templates. "Transplanted", no less! --RexxS (talk) 23:13, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

King George

And another request
editOn the above note, I will be sandboxing User:Montanabw/Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey (Which might wind up being named Ramsey Farm, haven't decided yet) But need the "Circle R" silks. (see http://www.ramseyfarm.com/index.shtml ) Never mind, you have them File:Owner Kenneth L and Sarah K Ramsey.svg. Montanabw(talk) 21:24, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Also, have you yet figured out how to do silks showing the back without the buttons? Note DAP Racing. Montanabw(talk) 21:21, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Help!
editGetting some flak at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/California Chrome/archive1 because the back design of File:Owner DAP back.svg is on a template that looks like the front. Can you eliminate the buttons? Also, can you provide me a source where you get the descriptive details on colo(u)rs? Montanabw(talk) 03:38, 30 July 2014 (UTC) I'm afraid that I'm not the artist but the programmer, and my mate the artist has not been responding to requests lately! In the meantime I have done my best with a back (at least it hasn't got buttons). Hope that deflects some of the flak. Interested in the discussions about copyrights, please keep me informed. By the way I am a (English) "he". Regarding colour descriptions, that is the Holy Grail, and they seem harder and harder to get hold of. More and more sites only show their own (often incorrect) images. I can get the latest UK colours from a SMARTFORM feed, and Weatherbys publish a supplement every year (but don't provide back issues). Prior to 1970, Ruff's Guide also published a list each year, but since that stopped I have a big gap until the end of the century. There is a thread on the Racing Forum site where many leading race winners are published by enthusiasts, but for me the winner is a "horse", whereas the 1-2-3 is a "race" so I keep looking for new sources.(JockeyColours (talk))
Aga Khan's colours
editHi, I've put a note on the Epsom Derby talk page re the 1988 winner, Kahyasi, who carried the colours originally used by Aga Khan III. Same thing applies to the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes 1986, where Shardari also carried those colours. Would you be able to fix it at all? Thanks. --Bcp67 (talk) 21:51, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for sorting that, looks great. --Bcp67 (talk) 18:05, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
- I have another one for you, if its OK. Toulon, in the 1991 St Leger - wore Abdullah's French colours, with pink epaulettes rather than the pink sash. It doesn't always work that a French-trained Abdullah runner carries them (Zafonic wore the sash colours when he won the 2000 Guineas), but Toulon had the epaulette colours that day. Hope you don't mind these comments - I don't know how to fix them myself, sorry. --Bcp67 (talk) 20:49, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
Badger Ales Trophy
editHi JC, would you mind having a look at the Badger Ales Trophy? The winner has been disqualified, so the 1-2-3 colours need changing - is that something you can fix? --Bcp67 (talk) 19:52, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip-off. I have now updated. (JockeyColours (talk) 22:45, 17 November 2014 (UTC))
- Thanks, all the best! --Bcp67 (talk) 17:43, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi, you might be wondering why I took out all the work you did in extending the winners back to 1987 - what's happened is that the winners you added were actually from the December Gold Cup, the 2m5f race at the same meeting - sorry for having to undo all your hard work. But the references were useful, and I have retained the ones relevant to the article. All the best! --Bcp67 (talk) 05:48, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
Oh hono(u)rable one...
edit...And great god of racing silks! Any chance you could whip up the colours for the USA Jungle Racing, LLC for Jim_Rome#Horse_racing? Shared Belief is apt to continue his winning ways and so is the stable. photo here. Gracias and so on... Montanabw(talk) 02:10, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

Thank you oh great one! Montanabw(talk) 20:12, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Horse Profiles
editI am experimenting with displaying the colours based on a horse's races.
Do you think such a thing could add colour (and happy memories) to the biography of a horse like Kauto Star?
I'll not weigh in on jump racing, but I'd not favor it, personally, for US flat racing. At least, not on the stats chart for a horse with an extensive record. For a horse such as, for example, Mucho Macho Man or [{Zenyatta]], it would bloat a race chart to the point of unusability. Montanabw(talk) 00:28, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
I think you're right, I will save them for my own JockeyColours.com site. I just hope nobody accuses me of trying to "sell something" if I then provide a References link! (JockeyColours (talk) 08:02, 12 January 2015 (UTC))

Lanzarote Hurdle
editInteresting edit today - I never knew that Ray Cochrane rode over hurdles early in his career until I saw that. Good work on the Fairlawne Chase at Windsor too. --Bcp67 (talk) 22:16, 11 January 2015 (UTC) A surprise for me too. When I see Cochrane + Ron Sheather I always think of Chief Singer, but it seems it goes further back than that. Apparently he rode 9 winners over hurdles and only returned to the Flat when his weight dropped following a broken leg. (JockeyColours (talk) 08:00, 12 January 2015 (UTC))
Agfa Diamond (Gainsborough) Chase
editI saw you added the race to the list of British NH races - I was actually thinking of dropping you a line to ask if you had considered it for an article. It was a pretty important Gold Cup trial back in its day but lost its prestige somehow in the 90s and disappeared. --Bcp67 (talk) 15:07, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
I will rename it the Gainsborough Chase, that's more traditional - despite being listed under Current Races I don't really fancy calling it the Betfred Masters! Hope to have the new page up and running in the next couple of days. It's a shame this Sandown meeting is in such decline, it was always one of my favourites when living locally in the late 1980s. The Cheltenham Festival is great but there seems so much focus on it nowadays that much of the rest of the calendar is devalued.(JockeyColours (talk) 21:50, 31 January 2015 (UTC))
- You and I would have been at the same meetings! I was a regular at Sandown's jumps meetings from the late 80s to the mid 90s. A few of their jumps meetings have gone wrong over the years, the old Whitbread seems to have lost a lot of its status now, the Mildmay-Cazalet long disappeared etc. Also the modern trend is for top chases to be run as conditions races rather than handicaps, back then you'd struggle to find many decent level-weights 3m chases outside the Gold Cup and the King George VI. Look forward to the Gainsborough article and will do what I can with additions to it. Didn't Burrough Hill Lad walk over in it one year? --Bcp67 (talk) 08:52, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
References
editSo, for the recent new articles like the Gainsborough, or additions to Eider Chase, where have you got the details from? Would be good to have some citations or refs in there. --Bcp67 (talk) 19:45, 13 February 2015 (UTC) Most come from Timeform Chasers & Hurdlers annuals. Of course this contains a Copyright notice (although the winner data is surely "public property" rather than something unique to Timeform), so don't know whether I can reference it directly. What do you think? (JockeyColours (talk) 22:48, 13 February 2015 (UTC))
- You can certainly reference printed material, no problem at all with that. A copyvio is when you copy their words in directly, but obviously that wouldn't apply to information which, as you say, is in the public domain anyway - they don't have copyright over the winner of a race which people will have seen for themselves. --Bcp67 (talk) 23:09, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
- Definitely want to cite material source whether PD or not. I just had a big debate over verbatim use of some known PD material in an article on a National Park Service-maintained site, and got a sense of the rules - but the rules still require citation. If we don't cite, we run the risk of an automated copyvio checker getting all up in arms about verbatim wording. For myself, other than the raw statistics, I prefer to treat PD sources the same as copyrighted ones and avoid close paraphrase, but that's partly 'cause I'm really, really anal-retentive! ;-) Montanabw(talk) 19:50, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
- Agreed re copyright and close paraphrase. But there's no issue where its the bare facts of a race result - winner, trainer, jockey - what you refer to as the bare statistic above, that's public information. What I think would be copyright there would be any extra information added by (e.g.) the Racing Post, or Timeform - so any comments added to the result or description of how the horse ran, like "moved up to challenge 2nd last, led on run-in" - I'd say that would definitely be copyrighted.--Bcp67 (talk) 20:41, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
- Yup. I agree. Montanabw(talk) 00:07, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

editThere's a slight difference between the two sets of colours representing Iznogoud, 2004 & 2005, the cross-belts look more brown in one set and more red in the other. Not sure which is correct though. --Bcp67 (talk) 22:07, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so! If you need guidance on referencing, please see the referencing for beginners tutorial, or if you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks for the tip - have now fixed. Regarding another Kempton race, the Easter Stakes, I think it's now time to declare this "dead" and switch to Discontinued races. What do you think? (JockeyColours (talk) 16:37, 2 April 2015 (UTC))
- Yep, I'd agree with that, looks dead & buried in its old form to me. A question - what does "API" in "Jockey Colours API" mean? --Bcp67 (talk) 20:21, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
API=Application Program Interface - it just means (to me) that I am updating the page using an automated process rather than changing manually. (JockeyColours (talk) 03:05, 3 April 2015 (UTC))

- Except: See [3] You need to add the letter "Z" over the pocket of the shirt. And maybe a touch more blue - still turquoise, but see image. Montanabw(talk) 04:57, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
Have uploaded new version - hope it is how you intended. Incidentally, are colour descriptions (e.g. Turquoise, large yellow spots ...) for US races published anywhere online, or are internet racecards now only using images to indicate the colours worn? (JockeyColours (talk) 06:45, 7 May 2015 (UTC))
- That works nicely. To be honest, I have yet to find an online publication that describes silks, I think it's because there are 36 states that have licensed horse racing, and not all of them have the same rules for silks...though people do register their designs widely so no one else copies them. The Jockey Club has a registry, but it appears to be limited to New York: [4], California has its own rules. Sigh... the NYT had a good article about USA rules... Dawn Run Novices' Hurdle
editApologies for this but I've just marked your new article for speedy deletion under the criteria of duplicating an existing article. I created one last week - Dawn Run Mares' Novices' Hurdle. I have though copied across your jockey colours header to the existing article, so that won't be lost, and also changed the conditions to show that the race is open only to fillies and mares as you correclty stated - thank you. --Bcp67 (talk) 19:09, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
I followed the link on the List of British National Hunt races page. That will need to be be updated to point to your new page (the distance in metres also seems wrong). (JockeyColours (talk) 20:24, 23 March 2016 (UTC))
- Cheers - link sorted now. I've used the convert function to convert the distance in yards to metres, but I used the yardage figure from the accurately-measured distance of 2m 179yd, rather than the 2m 1f rounded distance, which would indeed come out at 3,420m. I actually prefer the 2m 1f rather than 2m 179yd - never seen the sense of measuring NH races to nearest yard, so I am going to change my article. All the best! --Bcp67 (talk) 20:47, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, I wasn't clear. It was the distance in metres on List of British National Hunt races that was wrong. I have corrected it now. (JockeyColours (talk) 22:37, 23 March 2016 (UTC))

Here is a version that I have used for UK runners such as Casual Look, the winner of the Epsom Oaks in 2003.
Googling I found several versions of the green and gold, but I suspect the one you want has three (thin) chevrons on the jacket, and two chevron armbands, with a plain green cap. If you can confirm then I will make one to this specification. (JockeyColours (talk) 20:42, 29 June 2016 (UTC))
- Would prefer the USA design with arm chevrons (looks like two on the arms, three on the back) and solid green cap. Here are two images on their own web site: [6] [7]. Montanabw(talk) 21:08, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Lists of races
editDo you reckon there is any value in adding the name of the most recent winner to the race lists for each country? I'm thinking it might be worth doing but not sure and thought I'd see what you think before going to the project page. Cheers. --Bcp67 (talk) 20:02, 1 November 2016 (UTC)
As someone who generally accesses Wikipedia on a wide screen desktop, I am not against the idea of augmenting the existing data to attract people towards the pages themselves. However, if we are targeting SmartPhones and Tablets then probably the tables are better kept narrow. If we do decide to add, then I think I would prefer them to be for the current season and filled in (from blank) as the season progresses rather than continually wrapping around to the previous running. All in all it's probably best to propose this on the project page - it should be an interesting discussion. (JockeyColours (talk) 19:53, 3 November 2016 (UTC))
- Great, thanks for that - has given me a different perspective as I don't use phone or tablet at all, so I hadn't thought of that issue. Wrapping round to the most recent running was what I had in mind but just current season might be easier to follow. I'll put it up for discussion, thanks again. --Bcp67 (talk) 20:33, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

The silks are registered to Khalid Abdullah in Europe, with a sash in UK and epaulets in France. I think both Arrogate and Flintshire wore the UK version at the Breeders Cup, so I guess that is also the US version:

We noticed though that when you edited Al Maktoum Challenge, Round 2, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Godolphin. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Thanks for all your good work. Would you be able to add some colours to this article? Tigerboy1966 07:03, 5 June 2017 (UTC) I would be delighted to add the colours (I have them ready here: http://www.jockeycolours.com/JockeyColours/career/flat2017/classics.jsp#Derby ) but what format would you like them in? We have tried before adding them as an extra column in the Results table, but to my mind it wasn't very successful as the bigger images distort the text entries. Alternatively, I can try a 6 x 3 grid (like on my website) or else just put a 1-2-3 at the top. (JockeyColours (talk) 18:41, 6 June 2017 (UTC))
Dubai Duty Free Cup
editHi, FYI image error on Dubai Duty Free Cup File:Owner Mrs R F Johnson Houghton.svg does not exist, I though it was maybe either File:Owner Mrs H Johnson Houghton.svg or File:Owner Mr R F Johnson Houghton.svg but the colours don't match the source so thought I'd flag for you to fix? editHappy New Year. I have been creating some articles on Oaks winners of the 1960s and I was wondering if you had an image of the Charles Clore colours to go with the Valoris article. I believe they were blue, pink and white. Tigerboy1966 07:27, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

List of South African flat horse races moved to draftspace
editAn article you recently created, List of South African flat horse races, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please follow the confirms on the Articles for Creation template atop the page. — Zawl 15:03, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

editIrish races
editHi, great work on new articles for Irish races. I've noticed on the Racing Post results there is a tab for "past winners" if you want to check any names of jockeys or trainers. Also, if you want to identify the Mullins cousins, Danny is D E and David is D J - David has an article with (jockey) as the dab, Danny doesn't have an article yet. I'm hoping to use this quiet spell for racing to make sure articles have ref and all up to date. All the best --Bcp67 (talk) 17:00, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
Your article creation
editI came aross this in my search for Wrack's races and as you created the Newbury Spring Cup article I thought this information might help a little: Winners of the Newbury Spring Cup, Daily Racing Form, 1916-07-18 [8] Stretchrunner (talk) 18:31, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for July 17
editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited National Stakes (Sandown Park), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Michael Hills (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Palace Pier
editHi there. Can you pop the silver colours onto the Palace Pier (horse) article. It had the blue and white colours for Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum (which I have removed), but it should have those for his nephew Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum. Tigerboy1966 15:04, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
La Coupe
editHi, I've noticed you added Glycon to the jockey colours for La Coupe - he actually won La Coupe de Maisons-Laffitte, which was confusingly run at Longchamp this year. Would you be able to fix at some point, thanks. --Bcp67 (talk) 14:21, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

editHi JockeyColours, I've had a dillema since the Grand National last Saturday - I waned to add the colours for 1,2,3 & 4 (in sandbox waiting) but the 2nd placed Balko Des Flos wore crazy colours [9] that I can't seem to find anywhere on commons - Can you help in creating or pointing me in the right direction (I'm usually more involved in the In The News section of the Main Page so I tried to improve the race article in order that it would get published on the day but would still like to kind of finish it off for future reference). Best regards JW 1961 Talk 11:20, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
Yes, I had a bad feeling as I saw the 2nd horse cross the line last Saturday - how to easily reproduce these colours?! I will do what I can this weekend and get back to you JockeyColours (talk) 13:34, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- JockeyColours, Thanks so much JW 1961 Talk 14:54, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

I've tried but I'm certainly no artist - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Owner_Racehorseclub_Com.svg Hopefully it captures at least the spirit of the original design?! JockeyColours (talk) 17:01, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Abingdon Stakes
editHi JockeyColours, would you mind updating the 2020 colours on Abingdon Stakes please? The winner, Franconia, has been disqualified - you probably saw the story this week. Thanks and best wishes. --Bcp67 (talk) 17:53, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
Can you please add the silks for Verry Elleegant, the 2021 Melbourne Cup winner?
editUsing your own silk maker, (https://www.jockeycolours.com/JockeyColours/owners/colours.jsp), and some help from here (https://www.skysports.com/racing/racecards/flemington/02-11-2021/1045472/lexus-melbourne-cup-group-1-handicap), I have designed Verry Elleegant's silks on your website. Unfortunately you don't have the svg on your site, and I don't want to violate your copyright (if this is applicable to the "make your own" section).
The description I used was: "red, royal blue band, royal blue armband, red cap, royal blue tassel, band on cap" which gives the correct silk combination.
Your help would be much appreciated. DiamondIIIXX (talk) 01:39, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
- DiamondIIIXX Thanks for getting in touch. I have now uploaded the image for Jomara Bloodstock Ltd and added to Verry Elleegant JockeyColours (talk) 07:51, 3 November 2021 (UTC)

Grand National silks
editWhere do you stand on adding silks to every horse in the race card section? Should it be a separate section? Should it be ommited entirely and just have the placed horses silks? Should the owners be listed in the race card?
All the Grand National pages appear different and I would like to standardise them all. Lankyant (talk) 21:49, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
- I think the silks of just the Placed horses is a good compromise. JockeyColours (talk) 13:24, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
- I will go through and add the placed horses to the individual Grand Nationals but I have added 1-2-3 silks to the main Grand National page up to 1987. 1987 is missing The Tsarevich silks which is black with a light purple cap, could you please see if you have it? Also need Hallo Dandys (all black but with green spots on cap), Corbiere (all light blue with 3 red chevrons on chest), Grittar (Light Purple with white stripes on arms and chest, quartered on cap), Aldaniti (White with blue sash and blue band on arms, blue cap) @JockeyColours Lankyant (talk) 04:43, 15 April 2022 (UTC)

March 2023
editHi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give RSA Insurance Novices' Chase a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.
In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. ~ Eejit43 (talk) 12:53, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
