Sabina Spielrein

I had to revert your recent changes to the Sabina Spielrein article. For a few reasons. 1. If you change the name of a file (image), then that image will no longer be displayed. Even if her name were spelled "spilbrein", you still can not "fix" it. 2. You make serious changes, like for example changing her place of work, without any explanation or indication of source. 3. In general, you remove sourced information, and that is usually a big "no no". Most of these changes you should really discuss first on the talkpage, and make them only after you see a consensus for them. Debresser (talk) 21:25, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for this. I've recently written the first full length scholarly biography in English of Sabina Spielrein (now added to references). As you know, I'm a Wikipedia newbie, finding my way. I'd like to amend the last sentence under 'Legacy' to read something like:'Extensive extracts from her diaries and letters have been published in [refs]. Her correspondence with Jung and Freud has been published in [refs]. A full bibliography of her published works appears in the English biography by John Launer [ref] and the German one by Sabine Richebaecher [ref]. How does that sound? 2 hours later:Having mastered the basics of editing (I hope!) I have now added two important facts to the summary of the article. 1. The well documented erotic relationship they had during 1908-10, which is closely depicted in Spielrein's diaries, acknowledged by Jung in his letters to her and Freud, and the reason that people are generally aware of her. 2. I have now made changes to the 'Early Life and Chidhood' section, covering what I believe are generally agreed to be the most salient facts about this period of her life, with appropriate references from biographies and reputable academic sources. I have left some of the secondary or journalistic sources from the earlier version of the article unchanged.Johnlauner (talk) 09:53, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

Today I have edited and expanded the section of her life from 1904 to 1911 in accordance with current scholarship. I have added some citations but have had problems with using an initial attribute followed by further citations in the prescribe form When I did this yesterday it seemed to work fine, but today I get error messages saying I haven't added the final </ref>. I've now worked out what I was doing wrong and corrected it, but would appreciate advice about how to use repeated references to the same source but with a different page number each time eg "Lothane 1999" page 115, and then later "Lothane 1999" pages 170-77.Johnlauner (talk) 09:14, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

In the last few days I've updated all the sections, have had it reviewed informally by colleagues who are also experts on her life and ideas. Happy to have further feedback, and can add citations anywhere extra they seem to be needed. I'll work on the Further Reading next week Johnlauner (talk) 11:10, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

I have continued to edit this page, checking all the citations and references by previous editors. I have removed duplications, replaced secondary with primary sources where possible, but deleted that was unconnected with Spielrein, and an orphaned citation in the text with no reference. I have changed her patronymic from Naftulovna to Nikolayevna (including in Cyrillic) as she used this name on her papers published in Russian, as well as on official forms (see Etkind 1997 in references). It is also the one used for her on modern Russian websites. I have given the name on her birth ceritificate as testified by Ljunggren and Richebächer who have seen it (see refs). I have added a further transliteration of her name. 'Shpilrain' as this is the one used by her heirs in north America including the mathematician Professor Vladimir Shpilrain. Help me!

Please help me with: should I cross-refer every time I mention a name that I've already cited? (eg "Shakespeare was born in 1564...Shakespeare finally died in 1616?.") Or is it enough to do it just the first time?

Also is it expected to cross-refer to everything that has its own page or can you ignore some if it is totally obvious someone could look it up if they really wanted to? (eg Shakepeare produced his plays in London)

Johnlauner, we link articles with the relevant Wikipedia hyperlinks when it aids in the understanding of the article, when the information is relevant to the subject, when an unfamiliar term or phrase is used, or for proper nouns (people, geographic locations, et cetera). Generally, we only bluelink the obvious at the beginning of the article; things such as "London", and "Shakespeare". If those are already linked once, it's not necessary to do it again.
