Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contribution(s). However, as a general rule, while user talk pages permit a small degree of generalisation, other talk pages such as Talk:Tropical cyclone naming are strictly for discussing improvements to their associated main pages, and many of them have special instructions on the top. They are not a general discussion forum about the article's topic or any other topic. If you have questions or ideas and are not sure where to post them, consider asking at the Teahouse. Thanks. AntiDionysius (talk) 22:37, 19 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Please refrain from using talk pages such as Talk:Hurricane Sally for general discussion of this or other topics. They are for discussion related to improving the article in specific ways, based on reliable sources and the project policies and guidelines; they are not for use as a forum or chat room. If you have specific questions about certain topics, consider visiting our reference desk and asking them there instead of on article talk pages. See the talk page guidelines for more information. Thank you. AntiDionysius (talk) 00:04, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Message from WeatherWriter (Help with getting started on Wikipedia)

edit

Hey Joseph Ca98! As mentioned above by AntiDionysius, article talk pages are not suppose to be used like a standard forum-style page. They should be used to help improve articles. With that, I saw you mentioned adding information on category 6 hurricanes. Some information regarding a proposed category 6 ratings is actually already in the article: Saffir–Simpson scale#Proposed extensions. A perfect way to use an article talk page would be if you have additional information and sources regarding a proposed 6th category for hurricanes. If you do, that is what you should either add to the article or mention on the talk page.

With that being said, while article talk pages should not be used like a forum, user talk pages can. If you want to message me about Wikipedia or a general weather-topic, feel free to message me on my talk page anytime! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me! Cheers and welcome to Wikipedia! The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 00:17, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Articles to work on

edit

Hey there Joseph. I was curious what aspect of tropical cyclones you're most interested in. Was it European tropical cyclones? Was it more recent storms? What about lists? For example, I had a lot of fun writing List of California hurricanes. There's a need for List of South Carolina hurricanes, for example. Or maybe you're more interested in older storms? Whatcha think? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:39, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I am just really interested in hurricanes. Any hurricanes, but Atlantic and Pacific are really interesting. Joseph Ca98 (talk) 11:14, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree, Atlantic and Pacific storms are interesting, but I guess I'm wondering if you're more interested in newer storms, older ones, or a combination? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:38, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Newer ones (storms from 2012 onwards) and Katrina Joseph Ca98 (talk) 20:44, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ooh, glad you mentioned Katrina! There is actually a big project between a few users, including myself, trying to get the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season article to a featured topic, which means every storm from that season is a good article. Katrina is a huge topic and a lot of work is needed. Was there any aspect of Katrina that you were interested in? There's political effects, the number of displaced people, the rebuilding of New Orleans. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:47, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Do you have the famous point on where the levees broke and flooded 80% of New Orleans? Joseph Ca98 (talk) 20:50, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Or Miami's landfall? Joseph Ca98 (talk) 20:51, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
There's articles on Effects of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans as well as Effects of Hurricane Katrina in the Southeastern United States, both of which need a lot of work. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:55, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
OK! Joseph Ca98 (talk) 20:56, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Now, I wanna give you a heads up that these articles are gonna take a ton of work. I worked on Effects of Hurricane Katrina in the Southeastern United States fairly recently, and the entire Louisiana section needs reworking. I was going to get to that at some point, but if you wanted to try, you might be able to figure out what needs to be done. For example, making sure the information is cited, makes sense, and is thorough. There doesn't need to be a ton of information about Louisiana, since there's the subarticle for New Orleans, but it should be covered in some detail. Let me know if you need help or direction, but a lot is going to need to be rewritten entirely. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:59, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, but I still have no idea how to cite, already have a lot of work, and can't find a time. Joseph Ca98 (talk) 11:17, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Citing is extremely easy. You start with <ref> and then put the url in, and then end with </ref>. There's a lot more you could do, but if you're in a hurry and just want to include the URL, that's OK too. As for not having time, that's also ok, there's no deadline. But if anyone has an interest in writing, they should at least know the basics like citing, for whenever they do have the time. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:15, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Joseph Ca98 (talk) 20:37, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Umm, i put in the URL for a cite, and it did not work. Joseph Ca98 (talk) 17:45, 25 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Try it here. For example, [1] - this is the most basic way to cite something. Below is how it'll show up. But if you look below, you'll see that the second one is a more completed reference, like right here - [2] You can look in the edit window to see how I did that.
How the reference looks.

Just a quick question cause I'm very tiny-brained, and wasting my sweet, precious time working on a Leslie article (pls don't kill me I'm trying to do Katrina too), and I don't know how to get started (no I can't get to the page where I start making the article) so can you please tell me it might help for any other articles too butt i don't know srry Joseph Ca98 (talk) 17:44, 26 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Never mind Joseph Ca98 (talk) 17:44, 26 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
why did i say butt i meant to say but Joseph Ca98 (talk) 17:45, 26 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'm very tiny-brained, and wasting my sweet, precious time

I gotta address this first. I don't think anyone should speak down about themselves that way. The fact that you typed that means you have enough brain capacity to type with multiple words. That is better than the average person online. Secondly, you shouldn't be editing Wikipedia with the mindset of wasting time. If you're doing something as an experiment, then you can make sandboxes, like if you wanted to try writing something up. As for Leslie, you have to start with the question, what are you trying to add that isn't currently on Wikipedia? That should be the goal for any editor. If you want to make articles to get Wiki credit or some kind of status, then you're editing for the wrong reasons. We're all editing the same encyclopedia, trying to contributed to the sum of human knowledge. So there are two very different questions you're asking. Are you asking how to make a new article? If so, check out Wikipedia:Articles for creation. But if you're asking how to edit, I think you already know how to edit. So would you mind being a bit clear about what you are asking for here? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:22, 26 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia:Articles for creation helps. Also, sorry I did that... Joseph Ca98 (talk) 03:41, 27 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Furious

edit

Whoa there dude, why are you furious? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:48, 27 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

It's because of everyday life stuff. Joseph Ca98 (talk) 11:50, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
You gotta find good ways of dealing with all of that. Wikipedia is supposed to be a chill place where we learn and collaborate. If you're furious, I suggest taking a walk, listening to some chill music, that kinda stuff. It doesn't make for a good editing atmosphere when you're writing in all caps on talk pages, or saying you're furious. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:52, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh, thanks! Joseph Ca98 (talk) 21:14, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree with Hurricanehink here. If you need to calm down, then step away from the thing that hurts you. I almost quit Wikipedia, but with the help of others, I became better and calmer. 🍋 🍋(talk!) 20:24, 31 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thanks-now how do i delete Leslie Joseph Ca98 (talk) 20:25, 31 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

  It’ll be ok!
I know how you feel on people telling you “no”. I felt the same way when making the Kirk article. It wasn’t until a sockpuppet of Andrew5 (Crete44) published it. It‘ll be ok. The seas will calm down. 🍋 🍋(talk!) 20:32, 31 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
