Melbourne railway stations

edit

I'm sorry - the Essendon article isn't bad, but I'm not awfully fond of the format, and I'd rather not see it used across the network, for fear of having to do a cleanup round later on. Firstly, it's too short to have sections. Sections are useful for longer articles, but in standard articles of this size, they just make the thing look bad. Secondly, the language could do with a polish. Thirdly, the second image (and its associated caption) looks amateurish. I also don't think the quick facts box is really necessary - the content can fit fine into the lead section. In general, the content is fine, though - I just don't see why it can't fit into a standard article, as per the others. Ambi 11:21, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi - as I guess you noticed, I tend to answer questions on the page they are asked on - keeps the thread together. Anyway, yes copper (and other) mineral prospecting is done with multi-spectral imaging -see [1], [2], [3], [4] and[5] from a quick google on multi-spectral mapping copper. Could probably write a wiki article about this. -Vsmith 13:47, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Script (performing arts)

edit

Hey, thanks for that fix. I guess that was the obvious thing to do, but I never thought about changing the redirect.

re: User talk:Harmil#Script; Yeah, I might get my copy of The Complete Book of Scriptwriting back from a friend and see if there's any insight into scripts for stage that Wikipedia doesn't already have under screenplays (he covers a bit about stage play scripts as well). What would you think of Script (performing arts) pulling in info from play and screenplay, to create a general sense of what a script is for, how it's written and why it's different from a book? It would have links to the other pages, of course. -Harmil 13:09, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
PS: Points on Camera diet well taken. I'll see what I can do.... hmmm... I may need a TODO page soon.

Feel free to re-vote on Wiktionarypar2, and now on Wiktionarypar3 also. This is a new vote, with an explanation as to why I tagged them for deletion. The vote now covers both templates. You may want to read Template talk:Wiktionary for an explanation of the issue behind this. In short, Wiktionary is now case-sensitive, so the entire scheme of these linking templates needs to be updated. Creating these two new ones just adds confusion and is not going to be part of the final solution. -- Netoholic @ 15:52, 13 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

What are you doing?

edit

Why do you keep editing my User talk page? -- Walt Pohl 17:05, 14 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

I've been removing links to a disambiugation page; so that Special:Whatlinkshere/mercury isn't so polluted I can't figure out what's linking to it. Because I've been changing so many pages (I don't watch them otherwise I'd have thousands of pages being watched), I hadn't realised you'd changed it back, which is why the changes were made a second time. Do you have a burning desire to link a year old conversation directly to that disambiguation page rather than indirectly via an external link? Josh Parris 23:37, 14 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I just realized that you deleted the carefully compiled list of people named Moore from that disambiguation page. What on earth made you do that, and why, on top of that, did you hide it as a minor edit?

It seems you couldn't even be bothered to compare the two lists before embarking on your deletionist venture. If you had done so, you might have noticed that lots of names are missing from the list you are referring to, possibly orphaning quite a number of stubs. If you had carefully transferred all new pieces of information to the "List of people", we could have argued what the point of removing material from a disambiguation page might be. The way you acted, however, seems rather irresponsible.

Please be more careful in the future. All the best, <KF> 21:33, July 15, 2005 (UTC)

Scottish TV

edit

Hi Josh. I just noticed your edit to Scottish Television, but have to say that a link to independent station is inappropriate in a UK context - "Independent Television" is the name of the first national commercial TV network, founded in 1955. -- Arwel 05:01, 4 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

DPT

edit

Thanks for altering me to the ambiguity in User:Pmanderson/DPT, but I did not mean independent (mathematics); I meant a weak version of logically independent. I am sometimes tempted to hold that the rush to dab does more harm than good; after all, it's providing readers with a mere convience. Septentrionalis 21:19, 4 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

I'm pleased that I got part of the way there - Logical independence does appear on independent (mathematics). I agree that sometimes it is too easy to dab counter to the intention of the author; but if the author was clear on what they wanted to link to and in less of a rush to link then disambiguation wouldn't be necessary. Sometimes in my dab work I actually remove the link, because it seems that the wikifier has basically linked in search of a dicdef of the word - not helpful. Re: Accolade (disambiguation)

edit

I found that in Accolade (disambiguation) you've linked to brace, but the brace listed there relating to music I don't think is the one you intended. Can you give me an explaination so I can create a differentiation between the existing one and the new one that needs to be created (I imagine going to have to modify the references to brace (music))? Josh Parris # 05:32, 21 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your note. I have no idea what that's referring to now. At a wild guess, I'd imagine I created the disambiguation page in order to facilitate linking, based on an article I edited; the most likely choice for this is my cleanup of Death and the Maiden (song) so checking there might be a start. Really all I did was rephrase the existing text, and clean it up a lot; I didn't fact-check it too much, so it might be that an accolade is not a brace between two staves (which is the usage I would have created the d'ab page in order to draw attention to) but I've no idea. Hope the link helps, at least. Rob Church Talk | Desk 12:38, 21 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Braces

edit

It's true that this is a plural, but "the braces" are normally considered as a whole - even if you're only moving one sail, which you generally don't, you still need to work with both of its braces. Hi Josh, Can you explain why you removed the following. Could you put that explanation on the Sarfati talk page as requested.

he also referred to homosexuals who disagree with anti-homosexual interpretations of the Bible as homonazis, a term which is offensive to most homosexuals given their persecution by Nazis.

Yeah, I'm tired and it's late. Don't ask me how- but I overlooked the beginning part where you said "How is this..", I only saw the POV bit after the quote. In any case I hope that I've made the situation clear on the talk page.

Thanks again for your response. Christianjb 07:11, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yup, well I got my sleep, and woke up to find another series of edits by an anonymous editor once again trying to alter the text on the Answers in Genesis page regarding these comments. I don't know. I think it's highly relevant to point out the reason why these neologisms could cause particular offense is because of the persecution of gays during the Holocaust. They will continually argue that even pointing this out is POV. I'm going to try and find a way tonight of reinserting this connection in the most NPOV way possible. I want people to know that behind the bluster of love-the-sinner-hate-the-sin, this organization is profoundly intolerant. There's also an ongoing fight about my pointing out that Answers in Genesis specifically links to the infamous Leviticus passage calling for homosexuals to be killed. Hell, I'm straight and this offends me- so I imagine it might be of some offense to the gay community.

In "good" news, I did manage to undisputably show that Answers in Genesis openly use discriminatory hiring practices for their creation museum (see the article). They haven't challenged that yet- and I don't see how they can.

Remember, this is a multi-million dollar organization who are anxious to create good PR. We're doing this part time and for no pay. This is a battle. Christianjb 00:07, 6 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

1.How do you get rid of the things you look up on a search engine or the bar on the top of the screen eg: when you type up w, then on the bar at the top, it list all the website you've been on starting with "w" etc?

2. first of all, i'm just asking out of curiousty, i'm not going to do it. You know that you can edit stuff on wiki. add of delete, even delete an entire article. if your loged on, it shows who done it. but what if an anonymus person, did it, but on the same computer, does the person get blamed for it?

You give me more credit than is due. The links I added were an attempt a disambiguating the bazillion links to John Moore from the find-a-grave list, nothing more. WikiProject Disambiguation Talk Request

edit

This is a form message being sent to all WikiProject Disambiguation participants. I recently left a proposed banner idea on the WikiProject Disambiguation talk page and I would appreciate any input you could provide. Before it can be approved or denied, I would prefer a lot of feedback from multiple participants in the project. So if you have the time please join in the discussion to help improve the WikiProject. Keep up the good work in link repair and thanks for your time. Nehrams2020 21:32, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Dividers redirection

edit

I am very sorry that I am new here and quite lost so please forgive me if I make any mistakes. I am quite confused while I try to learn the ropes here. This is in reference to your comment to me about the redirection of dividers. I do not know how to change redirections and I do not feel brave enough to do it anyway. You say Dividers was moved to the dictionary as it was just a short definition. I believe dividers deserves its own page and that any redirection should be avoided. I am willing to write a short article if someone would create the page which I do not know how to do. Or you can tell me where I can learn to do it and then I can do it myself once I have the text written. I hope you do not mind doing a bit of handholding while I learn. GS3 1 january 2007

How to categorise a page

edit

Some weeks ago I created the page Nicolas_Estevanez and shortly after a notice was added "This article is uncategorized. Please help improve this article by adding it to one or more categories," I have looked around and I think I could add the code to the page but I do not know how to find the list of existing categories or on what basis I should choose. I would appreciate it if you would help me categorise that page (military men? Cuba? Canary Islands? History of Spain? Death penalty?...) so I can learn. Thanks GS3 1 january 2007

Dab on archived pages

edit

I noticed that you have been editing some of the archives in /unusual measurements/. While the specific edit I noticed hasnt done any harm, I cant help being concerned that one day the bot(?) will change an archive in a critical way; it may be that it was very relevant to a particular discussion whether a person linked to an ambiguous page or not. I would seriously suggest that you skip any page noted as an archive when doing such disambiguation. Rhialto 06:03, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Human. It was clear what the intended term was. I put a {{dn}} in if it's not clear; on talk pages I just grin and bear it. Josh Parris#: 06:06, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Why the revert?

edit

Hi Josh I noticed you reverted the Melway article recently. Any reason why the new information wasn't valid? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hex77 (talkcontribs) 10:41, 11 January 2007 (UTC).Reply

Basically, who designed the cover of one edition of the Melway is trivia that does not warrant two weblinks to the design studio responsible; it smacked badly of spam. In fact, in my opinion, it is useless trivia even in the context of internal operations of Ausway, let alone an encyclopaedia article about their street directory. Trammel points

edit

Thanks for disambiguating the rod to pole. I grappled with that word(rod). I was looking for threaded rod but only the description of the bolt was the most accurate. Was the explanation of how to use the Trammel points clear to you? --Johnalden 01:35, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the feedback. A footnote was inserted in the introduction of Trammel points to clarify the point that you made about the wood beam. Machine screw is probably the best description on the pop up that you inserted. --Johnalden 01:01, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Definitely worth a note

edit

I assume then that you are unaware that melway has had the same design look and feel for the last 40 years? The fact that the company is beginning to change their approach after 40 years might warrant a short note.

As for the links. I was not sure how to go about that. Perhaps a link in the external links area may have been sufficient.

Sorption => *Sorp ?

edit

Dude, sorp, adsorp, absorp, desorp, are not words. Terminally, the "labial plosive" (like the b or p) becomes voiced (b only). Likewise before vocalics (like other voiced consonants or the vowels). It becomes unvoiced before unvoiced. The consonant at the beginning of "-tion" is unvoiced, so we use a 'p' there. The suffix "-ant" begins in a vowel (voiced by definition), so the end of the root becomes a 'b' (as in "adsorbant"). You can't use an unvoiced there (like "adsorpant") -- that's just not how it's done. Plus, everybody says "adsorb", and *nobody* says "adsorp". Just sounds weird. IP

edit

Josh, I reverted your edit on IP. The term 'intraperitoneal' does not mean 'the peritoneum', it means 'in the peritoneum' - in fact, it means surrounded by peritoneum except at the mesentery for a viscus and inside the peritoneal cavity for, say, an injection.

The terms you linked to are in fact redirects to the places I already had them linked to. - Richardcavell 00:21, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

ACC account creation interface access requested

edit

Someone has requested that this account be given access to the ACC account creation interface access, but you have not made a confirmation edit on your talk page. Could you please let me know if you were indeed the person requesting access to the tool? Regards -- Александр Дмитрий (Alexandr Dmitri) (talk) 11:50, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I must have missed that part of the instructions. Yes, it was me. Josh Parris 12:55, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I didn't miss it. It's not in the instructions. Josh Parris 12:59, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
It is effectively not in the user guide, but hidden away when you sign up to register. Thank you for pointing this out; I shall update the guide shortly to make it more prominent.
I have gone ahead and approved your request so welcome to the team. You may now access the tool here. Before you do so, please read the tool's guide to familiarize yourself with the process. You may also want to join #wikipedia-en-accounts on IRC where a bot informs us when new account requests come in as well as the mailing list.
Currently you are allowed to create up to six accounts per day (a day being from 0:00 UTC to 23:59 UTC), although you won't be able to create an account with a similar name to that of another user; these requests are marked "Account Creator Needed". However, if you reach the limit frequently, you can request the account creator permission at WP:PERM.
Please keep in mind that the ACC tool is a powerful program, and misuse may result in your access being suspended by a tool administrator. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions. Thank you for participating in the account creation process. Again welcome! ---- Александр Дмитрий (Alexandr Dmitri) (talk) 14:09, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Jeremy Soul editing

edit

Hey Josh, I was editing a new version of Jeremy Soul to reflect what the references actually reference, here it is. I had a look at the articles in Swedish and in Norwegian and with a rough translation they make very little mention of Soul, and definitely do not support what they assert they do. Anyway I saw you were editing it, so below are my thoughts (and I was being pretty generous!):

Jeremy Soul, or Soul is a British-born Asian dating coach for Love Systems.

Biography Jeremy Bonney was born in 1983 in London, United Kingdom, and gained a Bsc in Psychology from the University College of London.[citation needed] After taking an interest in the teachings of the seduction community, Jeremy Soul took part in a Love Systems workshop, a turning point in both his personal life and career.

Jeremy Soul began his career as a dating coach teaching at Love Systems. He was also voted the number one instructor at the 2008 Love Systems Super Conference.[1]

Recent media mentions include articles in Oslo’s Aftenposten[2], the Las Vegas Weekly[1], and Sweden’s Metro[3] and The Local.[4]

Be bold. I've cited the residence thing, that was covered in the Swedish article. I'm glad someone's willing to trim it down to verifiable statements - the Adam Lyons article got a lot better when all the unverified statements were removed. Josh Parris 01:38, 17 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Jeremy Soul

edit

Hey Josh Parris, I remember you voted in an AfD of Adam Lyons, some seduction guy. There is a similar AfD going on with a guy called Jeremy Soul. Any input from you would be interesting as there is the usual meatpuppetry going on I think, so some fresh eyes would be useful regarding the notability and sources on it

Here it is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Jeremy_Soul DRosin (talk) 19:58, 15 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Josh, I've had a look at the article, thanks for bringing it to my attention. I've had a go at improving it and put my 2 cents in on the AfD discussion. I think there's a real problem with a lack of coverage for this guy but would be interested to see if anyone else can turn up some more (and more useful) sources. I'v got the inconvenient habit of addressing complete strangers by their hebrew names. so Yehoshua, thanks for the help. it's good to meet you.

happy 2nd half of Kislev.

looks like a good week so far.

I'm sort of a rehabilitated vandal. as in a vandal tribesperson, locked up, accused of being an untermensch, and released a while later. subsequently i've made several contributions, including fixing 200 extreme POV category template links, resulting in a warning about the moral impossibility of responsibly claiming that judea ever existed, and that the palestinians did in fact occupy land belonging to jewish terrorists before the common era. if this is a POV, then please ban me. i can't really tolerate extreme intolerance. this itself is a form of, in my POV, mild intolerance. intolerance of intolerance is an extremely ethnocentric POV, since tolerance relies on the absence of certainty and the

systematic erasure of inconvenient historiography.

Re: R from incomplete dab

edit

You are correct; for example, because "Tomorrow" is the title of more than one song, Tomorrow (song) should have this template. Maybe the template should be better phrased, go right ahead if this is so. Also, happy new year!   Lenoxus " * " 19:31, 1 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Whoops, I indeed misread your original. I should have just linked to this conversation that apparently inspired the template's original creator, Piet Delport, to create it. You're basically right about what I meant — "Tomorrow (song)" could be its own dab, but isn't, to save hassle.  Lenoxus " * " 23:42, 1 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I didn't realise. Tony Sidaway also did some archive as well... is this a big problem if I do this? Will it adversely effect the bot? - Tbsdy lives (formerly Ta bu shi da yu) talk 09:40, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

No. Now that I know that a bot is handling this, I won't do it any more, I was more just curious whether it would cause any issues. Back when I originally started the admin noticeboard there was no such bot, and I haven't participated in Wikipedia in an administrative capacity in almost two years, so this was news to me! Thanks for letting me know though. - Tbsdy lives (formerly Ta bu shi da yu) talk 09:50, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Abstractions

edit

Is there some reason you are discussing the bot about "incorrect name" instead of what the bot is doing? I have no idea if this is still about changing "American Broadcasting Corporation" or not. Is it? --IP69.226.103.13 | Talk about me. 05:50, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yep, because that particular problem is a specific case of a general problem. In the same way the problem with the American Broadcasting Corporation appearing on the main page was a specific case of the more general case of American Broadcasting Corporation being used on pages at all, and thus taken to RfD for resolution (rather than just fixing the main page featured article). Would you support me if I make a very specific application to change all of the instances from ABC->ABC, and then I generalize that for the generic {{R from incorrect name}} case, giving an immediate solution to this problem and a more general solution later? Josh Parris 06:03, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
The discussion was about the specific and it somehow got hijacked into the general. I'm only following the specific, and I don't want to read "grammars" written in that cumbersome combo-style on wikipedia, I just want to quickly look at what you plan to do. --IP69.226.103.13 | Talk about me. 18:36, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
