One useful thing to be aware of is that a decent number of interface boxes are based on the ELM327 chip, and that a lot of the software automatically supports that as well.

Also, just an offhand comment, but it may be better to distinguish between "smart" interfaces (those that have a microcontroller, or otherwise handle a certain amount of the protocols themselves) and "dumb" interfaces (those that require the PC to all of the work, including low-level communications), since there's a large cost difference between the two, and there are sometimes important functional differences between the two that may make the cost differences worth it. --Underpants 01:27, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
