Topics Summary

William Caslon was born in 1692 in Cradley, Worcestershire. He began working as an apprentice of a London engraver of barrels and gunlocks, later he would open his own shop utilizing his engraving skills and more. He was persuaded into taking up type design, by a printer named William Bowyer. After being persuaded, Caslon began designing typefaces finding immediate success.

Caslon eventually gained more success and popularity as he developed his down type face. This type face was well-known for its contrast between its thick and thin strokes, while not very creative; his type face was found visually appealing and very easy to read. Caslon’s type face would then influence other type face designer to incorporate similar details into their type faces. For example, the designer of Baskerville, John Baskerville incorporated Caslon’s use of thin stokes in his type face.

A VFX creative director is someone who is responsible for a film or videos visual effects. They have a very strong presence in a production being able to decide what effects will or will not be part of it. They are chosen to work closely with the director to ensure both the visual effects work well with the production and sometimes they assume the responsibilities of a director as well. A VFX creative director must direct and supervise the making of the effects from start to finish.

For example, the directors must supervise when a blue screen is being used to film an actor’s scene to later insert them into a certain background. They also must supervise the compositing of the scene, which is takes the blue screen footage and placing it into the visual effect images created for that scene. They are also responsible to direct the various other visual effect artists such as the editors and others. VFX creative director are not only have part of a productions visual effects, but can also have a contribution to the storyline, costumes and cinematography.
