CAR rebellion

I would appreciate if you keep all the relevant discussion on the talk page for the article in question. In addition, please keep in mind I will notify administrators and any merge will be voted upon. Unless you present your case in full, I am not even going to waste time in discussing it. I think I made my point clear - comparing the two conflicts does not work in your favor - not only has one of the groups changed sides (at least one), there is also a splinter cell within that group, the UN forces are missing, France and the US refused help this time around, and so on and so on. The fact that the two conflicts are interconnected, i.e. one is a consequence of the other, does NOT warrant as merge of the article. You can certainly go ahead and petition for a summary article with ALL the coup d'etat since the 60s, but other than, I think you have no point. So in your reply, please, I'd like to see actual evidence of what you're saying, and keep the smiley faces to yourself. Remember that WP is a combined effort, not a do-as-you-please adventure... Redundancy is bad

Keitsist, I see your point that these words may look weird to speakers of both involved languages. The fact, however, remains that "awkward" is still a heavily subjective word, which should generally not be used at all in an encyclopedic context. If something is awkward or not should be decided upon by the reader, not by the enclyclopedia. May I suggest a compromise? We could use the word awkward but in a sentence which quotes in the prose of the article itself the person who coined "awkward." How does "[...] which commonly leads to the, redundancy "Seleka alliance," which is viewed by [influential observer X] as "awkward." sound? —♦♦ AMBER^(ЯʘCK) 17:48, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Okay. But the thing is there is a RM at the moment about the name. It is worthwhile to leave the line of text with ref so that readers can see what the relevant part of the reference says. (Personally I consider this cite format annoying and reader-unfriendly, but I understand many editors like it).

Also. This edit isn't duplication:

• A. The word Seleka reportedly means "The Alliance" or "The Coalition" in the Sango language. (source journaux-francais.com but there are others)
• B. The name of the group means the "CPSK-CPJP-UFDR Alliance" in Sango (no source)

No, the source for B is AFP 2013-01-01, which is cited right at the end of that sentence. This source says exactly the same thing as the non-reliable looking blog cited for A.

It is redundant. Saying that "Séléka ABCDF" means "ABCDF Alliance" is the same as saying that "Séléka" means "Alliance," in my opinion. I see how a hasty reader could get thrown off by the group of initialisms, so a more pedantic explanation may be called for. As the abbreviations of the individual militia names have already been explained, their meaning in conjunction with the word "alliance" is self-evident. The name of the group isn't Seleka. It is Seleka CPSK-CPJP-UFDR. I added the content about the previous use in there for the precise reason that you state - to underscore that "seleka" alone is a generic term for a coalition, not a uniquely identifying name as it has come to be used. To be precise, it was not used as a name; it was used in a name.

I agree that the sfn citation format is not ideal. It is the most effective one that I have found so far though.

I apologize if I'm being thick. I am no linguistics expert. To me it is very difficult to imagine how "some foreign phrase" means "some English phrase, in some language" would not convey exactly what it seems like it should. In this case "the name of the group" stands in for the "some foreign phrase." While this requires the reader to remember for about three paragraphs what the name of the group is, it avoids repeating the unfortunately lengthy name itself.

The sfn style separates footnotes from the reference list, which is the intuitive approach for anyone who reads academic texts. I started appreciating it when I was citing books, which you can't click through to anyhow. The web links are still there in the reference list though. No, the equivalent statement is "'discos Sony BMG' means 'Sony BMG disks' in Spanish." Your statement, which I removed, is the equivalent of "'discos' means 'disks' in Spanish." Neither is incorrect. I am fixing the links. You are intentionally violating the clear policy at WP:CITEVAR. This is not about what you prefer. The sfn style is established in this article. Please stop damaging the article.

(1) WP:CITEVAR is something I have not seen before. Perhaps because the non-functioning template you are using isn't common on articles I work on.

For future reference however when you say someone is intentionally doing something counter a guideline that you haven't cited you're making an assumption and accusation which is straying close to a personal attack. It is best not to use the word "intentionally" about other editor's intentions freely.

Yes, I have put a lot of effort into this article, but that has nothing to do with the fact that it is objectively damaging when editors do not take due care to review cited sources. Sources give individual statements. We combine these statements into sentences, paragraphs and articles. That AFP source makes all the statements that appear in that translation that you objected to. I realize that this phrase is too complex for many editors to process all at once so it will be changed.

Okay you are in fact correct that you did mention CITEVAR, it didn't register. As I said I have never come across it. All the same please don't say "intentionally" in an edit summary, it is not nice. And all I can say is you've effectively locked out other editors from contributing to any article you make a rule that once this ghastly (and non-working) template is used every other user must use it or is not allowed to add sources, without which they cannot edit. And the result still doesn't work, you still have created an article where half the references cannot be seen or accessed. Click RFI 2012-12-20 and you see what I mean. I put up with citation styles that aren't my favorite all the time. Their documentation is all available, eg WP:SFN. I didn't invent that, I'm not the only one using it. I also repair and improve many references inserted by other authors. I believe that this is the most constructive path.

I see that some of those citations don't take you immediately to where you want to go. I apologize. I'm working on it. In the mean time it is easy to visually identify the appropriate source in the list below, based on name and date, just as in the journals we all grew up with. Again, I really don't mean to get personal, but I keep getting the sense that you are not reading thoroughly enough and then blaming (and even belittling) others when you don't comprehend (see: missed CITEVAR link, misread fini question, overlooked reference links, improper Sony BMG comparison). Plectranthus rotundifolius‎

Hi, Keitsist. Thanks for your additions to the Plectranthus rotundifolius‎ article! I liked your reformating of Vernacular Names table. I'm glad someone's taking an interest in the article, and the plant, since I've been really lazy about working on it. I copied some additional sources about the plant from the draft on my old user space to the article's talk page. Hopefully, they'll be you useful to you and other editors, and maybe to me if I get back to work on it.

I have a question about ngaboyo as a vernacular name P. rotundifolius‎. Is this just from the list in Lost Crops of Africa? If so, I'm dubious about adding it. Names from Lost Crops' list that I've been able to check have numerous errors – which can happen easily enough if someone's typing up lists of words in foreign languages, and the editors have no way to check them. For example, they have kentang dwaja as an Indonesian vernacular name. It's a typo for kentang Djawa, the pre-1972 spelling for kentang Jawa, "Java potato". They have kembili or ubi kembili listed as a name in Malaysia – gembili is a vernacular name for Dioscorea esculenta (a kind of yam), not Plectranthus rotundifolius‎. They give kizhangu as a vernacular name in India. It means "tuber" in Tamil and Malayalam, and P. rotundifolius called is siru kizhangu, "little tuber", in Tamil, but kizhangu by itself is not a specific term for P. rotundifolius in either language.

I haven't been willing to add names from the list in Lost Crops to the article unless they're confirmed by other sources familiar with the language, the plant, and the botanical name (preferably a source familiar with all three, but I've been willing to accept a combination of sources to confirm that a listed name is a real word and does in fact refer to P. rotundifolius‎). That Lost Crops just gives ngaboyo as a name in Chad without specifying a language doesn't exactly inspire confidence. --Namnagar (talk) 12:39, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

• I'm not really that worried about it. I have had no indication that the Lost Crops book is unreliable but that may be true. At the moment it is the only reference to the plant's name in Chad. My inclination would be to include it since I can't imagine how doing so would cause harm if it turns out to be false and it increases the chances that future editors will improve it. I didn't mean to imply that Lost Crops was in any general way unreliable, just that their list of vernacular names isn't.
