The rater tool is absolutely amazing - I've been vaguely hoping for something like this for years. Well done! Andrew Gray (talk) 21:02, 12 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Unclutter

edit

Hello there! I really like the idea behind your unclutter script (well, at least the signature cleanup part). I've noticed some bugs with the script. I'm viewing Wikipedia with the vector skin on a Win Vista laptop running Firefox 21.0. If you'll take a look at WP:THQ you'll see that your script does some funky things with the section headers and doesn't tidy up the signatures at all... I'm thinking because of the nature of that page, perhaps it is one of the pages your script should be disabled on by default. Next thing I decided to do to see how well it worked was to hit up WT:Protected_Page_Editor/Tally which is a wall of various signatures. Your script does fairly well at catching most of them, although I've noticed some of the formatting still manages to slip through. I would love to work with you on tidying up this script (pushing T27141 though would make this so much easier

). I had actually just begun User:Technical 13/Scripts/CommonHebrewUserNames.js‎‎ which was going to end up doing something very similar with an added function to roughly translate non-Latin usernames to a Latin equivalent. Anyways, I look forward to working on developing this with you (if you would like) and hope to hear back from you! Technical 13 (talk) 21:56, 18 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

It works fine on my Chromium. I also tested it on Iceweasel (15.0, on a remote computer, but still; I have to conserve space on my own) while logged out and it also worked without problems. Can you elaborate? Post a screenshot? Have you got any other gadgets enabled which might interfere? Anything interesting in the JavaScript console? Etc.
As of now Unclutter considers a signature to be a slice of the DOM tree which begins with a link to someone's user space (and optionally some fancy characters, possibly formatted using <span> or <font>, preceding it) and ends before a timestamp on the same DOM level, does not contain too long passages of text, links to other users' userspace, pages in some specified namespaces, or any external links. Non-timestamped signatures are not caught, because they are just too bloody hard to recognise. Though Unclutter has a bit more relaxed conception of what it considers a timestamp than, for example, Comments in Local Time (which I also use, and therefore took pains that these two scripts work together nicely).
Remember, you can write your own processSig which returns true whenever wgPageName === 'Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions', or under whatever condition you please. I am not particularly inclined to make any exceptions enabled by default.
Also, are you implying that the rest of Unclutter functionality is objectionable? :P Keφr 22:16, 18 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I have IE7, FF21, Chrome, Safari, and Opera that I can test stuff on. I just noticed that the rest of unclutter eats my talk page and makes a mess of my TOC... I am too tired and feeling ill right now, I hate the TB (I watch all talk pages I comment on for awhile and echos are more relaxed than TBs). As far as what might be interfering, I'm thinking it has something to do with the default site gadget "Ask a question on the Teahouse" that it isn't getting along well with. I'll take some screenshots in a couple days when I'm feeling better. back to bed for now though... Technical 13 (talk) 23:11, 18 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Technical 13: So, can you tell me what was the problem? Keφr 10:42, 23 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, sorry, been busy... The Teahouse screenshot is File:Uncluttered_Teahouse_bug_screenshot.jpg. As you can see by the screen shot it doubles up the "respond to this question" links. It does some other funky stuff on other pages as well, like it destroys my TOC and mangles my design on my talk page. I'll take some screenshots of those things as well. Signatures in the Teahouse forum are now recognised (but not wrapped by default) when the talkback link script is installed. I could not find the script responsible for the "respond" links, and it does not run for me at all — the reason is beyond me. But it seems to me like a problem that should be fixed in the other script; I have no idea how I could work this around. User talk page reformatting is part of the documented functionality. It might be a bit too aggressive sometimes, and admittedly some pages are not really deserving of it (though in your case, I would remove or at least brighten the background a little, it makes the page a bit harder to read), but I prefer that to talk pages looking like this. Yes, I have seen a few of those. I realise that in such extreme cases a better solution would be probably to actually remove the fancy formatting from the page, but Userboxpedia has some history suggesting it would not well. Ah, there it is. MediaWiki:Gadget-teahouse/content.js. Still no idea how I could workaround this. Keφr 11:39, 23 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) The script responsible for the "respond" links (which have recently been visually changed to "join this discussion") is a site-wide on-by-default gadget of which the code can be found at MediaWiki:Gadget-teahouse/content.js. You can (dis|en)able this gadget from the Browsing section of your Preferences → "Gadget" tab titled ""Ask a question" feature for the Wikimedia Foundation's "Teahouse" project". I find it less than likely that script will be modified to get along with your script due to it's status. Technical 13 (talk) 11:48, 23 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I will try my luck. Keφr 12:02, 23 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I saw that and have added my thoughts to it. Technical 13 (talk) 12:42, 23 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Please consider withdrawing/closing the discussion at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2013 May 21#Template:Information page early. The broad consensus seems to be "fix it in each place where it is used improperly" with nobody except you recommending deletion. One editor suggested rewording the template.

Until the discussion is closed, every place that this template is used people will see the following text:

The only reason to keep the discussion open is if you want to see if anyone else has other options or if others want to endorse some of the existing suggestions. Given the strong "keep" support, this template has a WP:SNOWball's chance of being deleted as a result of this discussion. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 17:47, 26 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
