Problems with my Gaelic

edit

Dear Kevin Scannell,

I just wanted to inquire about your deleting of my three articles. I think the possibility of some grammatical mistakes is entirely possible, as well as some general issues of intelligibility due to the topic being one not a common topic of conversation in the Irish Gaelic language. I just wanted to ask about it and I used this example to elaborate upon it:

"Tá an imreoir bisiúl go gránna i a trí bliain le an foireann"

Tá - Simply present form of Bí, identical to English "to be."

Imreoir - Player, derived from "imir." It originally referred to the concept of carrying, but its use as play is well-established, and imreoir's use as a word specifically for players of ballgames is also attested.

bisiúil - There was a typo here, fault taken.

go gránna - Terrifically. Google translate (which I did not use in writing the article, but I used it to check this bit after it was deleted) accepts it and actually combines bisiúil and go gránna as "prolifically," even with the typo

i a trí bliain le an foireann - in his three years with the team

Other than the typo, seems correct.

No, unfortunately, far from correct. For starters, Google Translate is not trustworthy! "gránna" means "ugly, offensive, horrible", etc. so I had no clue what you were trying to say here. There are several grammatical mistakes in the remainder as well: it should be "an t-imreoir" since "imreoir" is masculine. "i a" combines to "ina". It's "trí bliana", not "trí bliain". "le an" should be "leis an". And "foireann" gets eclipsed to "bhfoireann" in the dative. That's a lot to fix in one sentence... it takes a lot of effort for the very small number of fluent speakers to correct articles like this and bring them up to a readable state. We'd still welcome your help if you're interested in contributing other ways... there's lots to do in terms of infoboxes, categories, and so on while you ramp up your Irish. Amused

edit

So, thank you for the thanks - I was surprised to see you are in St Louis! I haz family in that there city.

Anyway - I followed the links you provided on your user page and had a very amusing time with google translate. I didn't recognise "Cadhan Aonair" (My Irish is not that good). So I let google translate the page and it claimed it was Single Cows. No, I thought, that's not it. So I stuck Cadhan into a google translate which claimed it was the hindi for resources. I changed it to Irish and it returned rabbits. So I just googled it and it gave me Brent goose. Finally one of the dictionary results suggested lone bird. This has been quite the amusing adventure. Meanwhile I find myself hoping you could take a minute to cast your eye over the various recent Irish language related women I have written articles/Stubs for to see if there are any horrible glaring translation errors since I mostly use machine translation for support. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 20:01, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

And I see you did find an error. Thank you. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 20:09, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Single Cows!! That's great. I just tweeted that out to Irish-speaking Twitter for a laugh. Happy to look over the articles you've written - maith thú for the work you've done so far, and I'm inspired by your long to-do list as well! Kevin Scannell (talk) 23:16, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Husseybot questions

edit

Hi Kevin, Husseybot is a great benefit, wonderful for picking up the odd missing fada here and séimhiú there, and I'm very grateful for it! However there's a puzzling message on the Úsáideoir:HusseyBot page, which I looked at just out of interest. It says "Riarthóirí: má tá an róbó seo ag sainmhíniú no ag déanamh damáiste, cuir cosc air, le do thoil." Although I'm no expert in the language, I'm sure the bot would be the first to notice that 'no' is missing a fada! But also, is 'ag sainmhíniú' (defining) really the word that was intended here? Dmhball~enwiki (talk) 14:36, 1 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Dmhball — thanks... I'm hoping to greatly improve the quality of the Irish articles. Plenty of work to do! That message looks like it comes from the Irish translation of Wikipedia, which unfortunately suffers from the same quality issues as many of the articles on ga.wikipedia.org. And yes, "sainmhíniú" is clearly wrong... so wrong that I can't even guess what the original English message was. Maybe I'll look into applying some of these automated checks to the translation files. Kevin Scannell (talk) 16:35, 1 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Townlands within town bounds

edit

Hi. Just curious, but was wondering if there was a reason for (re)creating a standalone article for An Ghráinseach Thiar, Contae Chorcaí (Mainistir Fhear Maí)?

I ask as Grange West is a relatively small townland (~270 acres, ~30 houses, ~90 people). That is, to all intents and purposes, part of Fermoy.

(I say this as all of its area lies within the civil parish of Fermoy. Most of its area lies within the town/census boundary for Fermoy. 10 or so of its 30 odd houses are on the "Fermoy side" of the "welcome to Fermoy" sign on the N72. And so a large portion of its population counted within the Fermoy census area.)

Typically, unless there are sources which allow for expansion beyond a short "Grange West is a townland in Cork" type stub, we wouldn't (on the English Wikipedia at least) have separate articles on the individual townlands within a town. Any more than, say, there'd be a separate article on the houses/businesses/whatever in Carrignagrohera townland or Fermoy townland within Fermoy.

I was wondering: are you aware of sources/coverage/material (perhaps which I overlooked) that allows for expansion into a more substantial standalone article? (Just curious really...) Guliolopez (talk) 20:18, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes, there's some material in Bailiúchán na Scol from this townland, for example. I'm interested in trying to link some of those stories with articles on the Irish Wikipedia if possible.
But having said that, I also believe we should have a lower bar for notability when it comes to places in Ireland. If you'd like to discuss that, we can, ach ba chóir dúinn é a phlé i nGaeilge ar ga.wp.org. Kevin Scannell (talk) 20:38, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hiya. Thanks for the quick response. RE:
  • "some material in Bailiúchán na Scol [..] link some of those stories with articles on the Irish Wikipedia". OK. Grand job. I'll keep an eye on the ga:An Ghráinseach Thiar, Contae Chorcaí (Mainistir Fhear Maí) article. And help expand if I can.
  • "believe we should have a lower bar for notability when it comes to places in Ireland". I don't understand why that would be the case. And, absent that understanding, don't agree. (There are 60,000 townlands in Ireland. Many no bigger than a field, containing no buildings, no population, no archaeological remains and (therefore) no sources to state anything more than their name. Other townlands are within, overlapping with or completely coterminous with other geographical topics. Like the towns/villages/cities they form part of. I don't see why, in those cases, we would have a "bar" which would expect an article covering a slightly different name (or even the same name) for the same geographical area.)
  • "ba chóir dúinn é a phlé i nGaeilge ar ga.wp.org". Ceart go leor. Tá baint agam leis an tionscadal le fada an lá. Tá leathanach plé agam ag ga:Plé úsáideora:Guliolopez. Tá Plé:An Ghráinseach Thiar, Contae Chorcaí (Mainistir Fhear Maí) ar mo "liosta faire" freisin.
