UKIP membership

Please read the RFC carefully as it has set the protocol that membership figures quoting UKIP sources should indicate that. The RFC was closed on 22 June 2014 by GimliDotNet who concluded his summary asking that "uninterested users please voice an opinion on this contentious issue". This was done by S Marshall on 5 August 2014, who wrote,

"There is a clear consensus to include the membership figures but make clear that UKIP itself is the source via in-text attribution." (my emphasis).

The point you make that all membership figures come from party sources was well made in the RFC and elsewhere. It is, though, not accurate. Where party claims are clearly ridiculous we do not use them and seek reliable sources elsewhere. As has been clear from UKIP's figures, on at least one occasion a party spokesman has got it wrong, apparently a genuine error, but it was quoted as gospel! The key point is that Wikipedia must not be seen to uncritically endorse any figure (or anything else, come to that) without giving a reliable source and stating what that source is. In the nature of things, a party cannot be regarded as a reliable source for a myriad things, including membership figures, and even when reliable sources such as quality newspapers give a figure it is accepted that they have probably just rehashed a party statement though they may have been able to research and verify things. For this reason, describing the figures as being sourced from the party, in this case UKIP, is essential. Emeraude (talk) 13:35, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

In response to your question at [1], Wikipedia's copyyight policies are quite proactive; we do not wait for proof of guilt. Please see WP:LINKVIO. We are prohibited from linking to videos where we "reasonably suspect" that works are hosted without license. WP:YOUTUBE notes that links need to be evaluated "for inclusion" on a case by case basis, not for exclusion. Alisdair links to this page where he makes clear that he is "Just someone who loves history, language, culture and music." Lacking any evidence that this user is an authorized uploader of this content, we cannot include it. If Alisdair demonstrates somewhere that he is an authorized representative of these diverse copyright holders, then we can revisit the question. On a case by case basis.

In the meantime, I will remove them as an uninvolved administrator. Please do not restore them. Unfortunately, we can't use stuff just because "someone who loves history, language, culture and music" uploads it to the internet, even if it would otherwise enrich our articles. --Moonriddengirl ^(talk) 22:22, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
