edit

Hi I am new to Wikipedia and I am trying to add information found at http://foodpsychology.cornell.edu/ to various pages as relevant. The problem that I am running into is when I try to upload the cartoons and info-graphics found on the website via wikicommons. I realize that as a new editor I cannot add media without first adding it to wikicommons but each time I add something it gets taken down because I do not have proper permissions. I am in contact with the people at the Food and Brand Lab and they very explicitly want their comics and info-graphics distributed and published freely but are not certain how to make that explicit on their website so that these images don't violate copyright law. My question is: what do I tell them to do to ensure that the original images that they post are allowable for posting on Wikipedia?

FYI I am not only going to be adding information from that site... that is just were I wanted to start since I am familiar with the information.

Thanks! Katie

  • Hi Katie! Although I'm not an expert in copyrights, I'll try my best to help you. One of the most important policy page regarding this I suggest you to read is Wikipedia:Copyrights. If the image/s you're trying to upload are not freely available in the public domain, then they cannot be hosted on Wikimedia Commons as that is for free content only. Also have a look at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission as the page describes a clear and easy process in requesting copyright permission. You can also ask this specific or any other help related questions at Wikipedia:Teahouse where other experienced editors can suggest you many different things. And you can also request any particular files to be uploaded for English Wikipedia at Wikipedia:Files for upload. I hope I've made things clear hereĀ :), but still I'll leave the help me template active for a second opinion if I've missed anything. Regards. -TheGeneralUser (talk) 18:51, 3 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
