Hi Knytil, it doesn't seem to be the case that Knút Háberg Eysturstein meets the notability criteria. Has this person been the subject of published, secondary source material? Also, is this a self-biography? I just wanted to let you know first and hopefully discuss this before I start the deletion process. --Ships at a Distance (talk) 03:55, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for getting back to me. I googled "Knút Háberg Eysturstein" and I got several sites selling music and a myspace and facebook page. While it seems like your music career is going really well, I have several concerns about this article. The first is that it doesn't seem to meet any of the criteria laid out in WP:BAND "Note that members of notable bands are redirected to the band's article, not given individual articles, unless they have demonstrated individual notability for activity independent of the band, such as solo releases. Members of two notable bands are generally notable enough for their own article." Maybe you meet "two or more albums on a major label or one of the more important indie labels" (I'm not really familiar with the labels mentioned in the article) or "Has been the subject of a half hour or longer broadcast across a national radio or TV network" since you mentioned you host a radio show. However, there are still a couple of important problems. Any information you put on Wikipedia has to be verifiable, which means it has to be published by reliable sources. Also see WP:OR. So even though you know all about yourself, and you have some webpages, that's not really a good basis for writing an article. The third and most important concern I have is conflict of interest. The article seems kind of self-promotional. I don't think it's the best idea to write an article about yourself, but if you fix the concerns I mentioned and add some published references, maybe I could help so the article is more neutral--Ships at a Distance (talk) 04:33, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Congratulations on all the success with your albums. About your sources though, none of them actually meet the standards of WP:SOURCES. While it's great you've had so much success with all those bands, again: "Note that members of notable bands are redirected to the band's article, not given individual articles, unless they have demonstrated individual notability for activity independent of the band, such as solo releases." You said on my talk page that readers and editors should be the judge of content that could have a conflict of interest. The problem is, that since all of this information is based on your own word, I have no way of judging whether or not the things you say about yourself are really true without reliable sources. The sources are really important. Policy states: "If no reliable, third-party sources can be found for an article topic, Wikipedia should not have an article on it." --Ships at a Distance (talk) 05:03, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
You're right that there is a ton of work to be done on Wikipedia, and way too many bad articles. (You should help out!) I think at some point I'm going to nominate the article for deletion, so that other editors can weigh in. But since you probably know more than anybody where the third party published articles are about yourself, I don't think there are going to be enough sources to establish notability or verifiability, even stripped down. But in the meantime, I hope you stay at Wikipedia and help out. You should start here: Wikipedia:Welcoming committee/Welcome to Wikipedia, familiarize yourself with Wikipedia policies, and if you need some ideas here's a directory for Wikiprojects I think you might be interested in: Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory/Culture/Music--Ships at a Distance (talk) 06:05, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Make sure you put the links you showed me on the article's page so that other editors can take them into account in the deletion discussion. --Ships at a Distance (talk) 17:19, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
The discussion is supposed to close after 5 days. If not many people comment, it can be relisted to get more discussion if it's necessary. I don't know about the ones from 2006, maybe you're looking at archived discussions or ones from 2006 that have a new deletion discussion?--Ships at a Distance (talk) 17:38, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

AfD nomination of Knút Háberg Eysturstein

I have nominated Knút Háberg Eysturstein, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Knút Háberg Eysturstein. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 23:46, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Knút Háberg Eysturstein

edit

Now that you started signing your messages, I see that the WP login name is the same as that of the DJ alias--so it's you. Well, congrats on the albums and the nice review from Rambles. (It may well be that that review can tip the balance to your advantage.) I went to work on your article and cleaned it up. You may not like what I did, but it's more in line with WP standards, and it stands a better chance of survival, IMO. The bottom is still that there are standards for notability (in WP:N), and everything relies on reliability (see WP:RS). In my opinion, allmusic does not count--and considering the wording of the bio there, that is probably submitted by someone close to the article, *ahem*. What might help is the tour in 2006, what would help even more is newspaper articles--the Faroe Islands aren't that big, surely someone wrote about Knút Háberg Eysturstein, no? What would also help is to tone it down in the discussion; you're not doing yourself any favors by being antagonistic, esp. not since you're the creater, and really esp. not since you're also the subject--that's a WP:COI concern. WP attempts to be more than a blog; some of us take this seriously. The more someone acts like they're being mistreated, the less sympathetic editors become--it's a fact of life, and not just here. We (well, most of us) have no intention of f***ing people, and if some articles slip by, well, there's almost 3 million articles. That other stuff exists on Wikipedia is not relevant. Good luck. Hello Drmies,

Thanks for the attempt to clean up the article, but apparently it was deleted so I didn't get the chance to see the changes made. It was never "up for editing" but "up for deletion", so that's that then. Off course you're all just doing your best to maintain WP, more power to ya!(Knytil (talk) 08:16, 18 January 2009 (UTC))Reply

Listen Knytil, I had good hopes that with a cleanup job (which might also make it more clear that for instance the Rambles thing was a real review, and I added the Green Man review) it might just squeak by. I hoped that some other editor would step up and say something nice and useful and keep it. Really, the article didn't need much more--a newspaper article (or two) and another review would certainly clinch it. Also, I had hoped that some editor (someone who knows this stuff) would say that Tutl (is that what it's called") is significant enough to provisionally satisfy WP:BAND--see "Criteria_for_musicians_and_ensembles" #5. I'm sorry the plan failed.
I've left a note for the administrator to see if I can keep a copy--you spent a lot of time on it, and so did I. Then maybe later the article can be restored, like when your next record comes out. I'll keep in touch. Drmies (talk) 16:31, 18 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hello Knut, the admin has left a copy of the article at User:Drmies/Knút Háberg Eysturstein. Now, I've beefed up the Tutl article as much as I could, because the deal is that WP:BAND states that notability for an artist is established by having two or more records with a major independent label. The admin wasn't convinced that Tutl was notable enough, which is why I've worked on that article a bit. So perhaps when that second album comes out you're notable enough for WP, in which case we can move the article back to the mainspace. This is probably redundant, but I would urge you to keep copies of your press clippings (with all the bibliographical information) so I can add that to the article, and maybe you can do something spectacular--though I wouldn't do what Varg Vikernes did to establish notability/notoriety... ;) Good luck, Drmies (talk) 04:53, 19 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
