Monthly/yearly page view dumps

Hello Kolossos,
Sorry for not letting hear from me earlier, and that it took me so long to finally publish the requested monthly/yearly logs. It's just that it has been relatively time and resource intense (for my PC ;-); but now it's done :-) Some (daily/~monthly) logs have been available earlier (you may have noticed it?), but I had to move all public logs to external services (after having aggregated data for 150 days (5 months) now). I hope with up to 150 days of counted page views you will have a pretty good basis for your analyses now.

The Project Openstreetmap is very similar to Wikipedia so you can edit there together with other volunteers. The only thing you need is a GPS-device. Please read the Beginners' guide. It's a really fascinating project. --Kolossos (talk) 13:09, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Coat of arms map

Hi Kolossos, thanks for the note - I took a look at the tool. That map is pretty cool! Unfortunately, I don't think I'll have the time to volunteer writing a Signpost article anytime soon (consider how long it took me to even reply here ;), but you could try posting a suggestion at WP:POST/TIPS and see if someone takes it up there.

Alternatively though, with my professional hat on, I think we could justify spending some time supporting the writing of a short blog post on the Wikimedia blog. The audience there is a bit different (more readers from the general public without a lot of technical editing experience), but I think it might work well there and maybe even generate some press. Here are two things that we would need to do:

• explain clearly how this is an application of Wikidata (the coat of arms property making this data machine readable, enabling the automatic generation of the map), plus what you wrote in the Kurier article
• find some interesting example screenshots - e.g. including several widely recogizable coats of arms, or showing how many towns on (say) Germany's North Sea coast have water-themed coats of arms.

If you are interested and have ideas for such screenshots, we could start off a draft on Meta soon, and I or one of my colleagues from the WMF Communications team could help with writing and publishing it.

Fix for wp-world/googlmaps-proxy.php

Someone on IRC mentioned the broken Google maps display on this page, which I believe you run, so I investigated, and I believe I have found the problem.

function initialize() {
  var chicago = new google.maps.LatLng();
  var mapOptions = {
    zoom: 11,
    center: chicago
  }

The "chicago" is maybe the remains of a test or a placeholder, and a blank LatLng isn't much use... This setting of the center seems to be what causes the problem, and removing these two lines (both lines with "chicago") cures the problem for me when tested locally, with the map automatically showing the right area.
