About a recent block
Just FYI: I can certainly see why User talk:Matey488 was blocked, but I didn't quite get the same sense of WP:NOTHERE. I've left a suggestion on their talk page to consider requesting an unblock after spending some time (weeks) learning. Cheers. Willondon (talk) 01:18, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Willondon: I certainly respect the attitude, but this is one of those cases where there's little sign of light once you look into it more. Matey488 is quite clearly a sock of NinjaRya; meanwhile, both appear to be duck socks of Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/RRRR8888/Archive, a user whose edits and socks I've dealt with for months. All these usernames have the same habit of edit warring on game show and award show articles (particularly American Ninja Warrior), against other editors' requests to collaborate. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 02:07, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

You're right, I miscounted there and should not have reverted. Thank you. Agtx (talk) 02:23, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- Agtx, I'm not sure why KrakatoaKatie reverted you without an edit summary. [1] I had a look at your edits when I was looking at the situation. This is exempt per WP:3RRNO. This is not a revert. This is your first revert. After I blocked the IP for edit warring, you made your second revert. --NeilN talk to me 03:28, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- You're even more right NeilN. I take it back. Still, I try to stay way on the right side of the 3RR, especially when I'm reporting another editor. In any case, I was considering making a case for it to be reverted under BLP guidelines when another user removed it independently from me. Agtx (talk) 03:35, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Agtx: Good grief - I used rollback, which is why there was no edit summary, and accidentally reverted you when I was trying to revert the other guy. Sorry about that. I had the edit history pulled up while I was dealing with the RFPP report, and it showed the IP edits as the most recent. Came back, hit the rollback button and it must have reverted yours instead of the IP's. That'll learn me. Facepalm KrakatoaKatie 15:38, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

I'm very sorry about the situation on that page, and I regret reverting. I'm sorry. I'll try to get it resolved on the talk page, I just wanted to say that I admit that I was wrong.
Best,
GAB (talk) 23:25, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- @GeneralizationsAreBad: You were fine at one revert, and it's okay to come to RFPP if you think the page needs protecting. You're supposed to do exactly that, and I have no problems with it. It's the cycle of reverting over and over with edit summaries about talk page discussion without, you know, any actual talk page discussion that isn't constructive. Like I said, I know next to nothing about Marxism but the IP edits are clearly not vandalism and are not exemptions to 3RR.
- If he has something to contribute, great, if not, great, but that blind reversion stuff had to stop. If the dispute gets resolved before the one week protection is up and I'm not around to remove it, ask any administrator to do it and point to this discussion. Thanks. KrakatoaKatie 00:41, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
- Precisely right; it was the whole talk of "discuss on the talk page" that was so ironic. I have posted on the talk page about my view of the edit. I kind of freaked out when I believed I would be blocked, and I tend to apologize mindlessly when I don't know exactly what I did wrong. Thanks for protecting the page, in any event; I'll try to deal with this and reach a compromise without any more reverting. Sorry for the trouble.
- Best,

Dictatorship of the proletariat
Thank you for protecting the article. What is happening there is part of series of forcible NPOV edits introduced by 2 users, possibly sock puppets of the same person, who has now switched to an IP user. There was actually some factual discussion with this person, but the main problem was that his edits were really significant and he rarely took up any discussion, just removed whole parts of the article. I have just briefly documented history of his activities here[2]. Kravietz (talk) 10:29, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
- As the current article protection expires tomorrow may I ask you to keep at least anonymous user edits protection for some time? Kravietz (talk) 20:11, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Kravietz: Looking at the talk page, it probably should continue. I can't see any agreement there on what the article should or shouldn't say and I have no confidence that the edit war will not resume. (Pinging NeilN and Nakon for second opinions.) If you feel there's sockpuppetry going on here with a named account, as you're alleging on the talk page, you should start an investigation at WP:SPI. There's circumstantial evidence that the IPs are the same person - the 177.189/0 range is listed as static IPs, so that's definitely suspicious - but you'll need a CheckUser to look into any named account(s). KrakatoaKatie 21:32, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
- I think full protection should continue and parties should consider using WP:DRN. There's no consensus on the talk page yet. --NeilN talk to me 21:47, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Protected the page for two more weeks. This sockpuppetry issue needs to be settled. KrakatoaKatie 23:32, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for advice - will do both. Kravietz (talk) 04:33, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
- I think the specific suggestions by Kravietz on talk page [3] are very much reasonable. Probably the best solution on this point would be to semi-protect this page. This would allow long-term contributors to fix the page (which is full of "original research"), and even possibly clarify the sockpuppetry issue (if any). It does appear that the user uses multiple IP addresses for edit war (see here), which is a violation of WP:SOCK, although I am not telling this is necessarily Zozs. My very best wishes (talk) 20:52, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
- A request has been made for moderated dispute resolution at the dispute resolution noticeboard. Two of the editors there have said that the only disruptive edits to the article were made by the IPs, and have requested that the protection be downgraded to semi-protection. Hey,
I thought I had seen enough evidence to protect The Huntsman (film) for three days under persistent addition of unsourced content. I hadn't seen you already declined it. I wanted to know if you have any objections to me leaving it protected. Thoughts? --ceradon (talk • contribs) 01:48, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Ceradon: That's fine with me. I think I saw it earlier in the day and felt it was too infrequently edited to justify semi, but in retrospect I might have done PC for a month. It happens sometimes that I'll disagree and protect something someone else has already declined, or vice versa. No big deal. I'm more aggressive with protection on BLPs than I am on other types of articles with an edit pattern like this one has. :-) KrakatoaKatie 11:37, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
Requesting creation of "Denise Milani"
I'm not able to create a "Denise Milani" article because it is protected so that only admins can create it. You were the admin who protected the page which is why I'm here. So I'm requesting that you create the page for me, or let me know what needs to be improved before you allow it, if necessary. And I've already made a draft, which can be viewed here: User:Rainbow unicorn/sandbox Thank you. Rainbow unicorn (talk) 09:56, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
- @Rainbow unicorn: Sorry I had to step away from here for a few days. This article was recreated as spam/silliness many times after the 2007 AFD discussion - like ten times - and that's why we had to salt it. I'm satisfied that your draft is substantially different than the version deleted at AFD, so if you give the okay, I'll move your draft into the mainspace (I won't disturb someone else's userspace without permission, so you need to tell me to do it). I should probably do it myself, bypassing AFC, because of the high probability it will be declined under CSD#G4 (or simply tagged if you move it yourself) - such is the way of things, sadly. Please note that I have no opinion on notability of the subject. Let me know whenever you're ready. :-) KrakatoaKatie 05:24, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
- I give you permission to move my draft for me. Rainbow unicorn (talk) 08:32, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Adminly advice
Hi KK! Was hoping I could bend your ear quickly. I've got a competence case that I'm trying to figure out how to handle properly. This guy's English is really bad, the user at one point was dominating the talk page at Talk:List of Dora the Explorer episodes with completely incoherent text. And, to top it all off, he was indeffed at the Spanish Wikipedia. Should I climb the blocking tree with him (48 hrs, 72 hours, 1 week ... indef) or just pull the plug and indef him now? Something else? I don't see how warning him again is going to make him more competent. Your thoughts are appreciated. I'll watchlist your page. Thanks! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:38, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
- @Cyphoidbomb: Looks like you stopped him, at least temporarily, with the last warning. It's apparent to me that he's aware of his language problems. It's almost as if he's using Google Translate or something similar to make his edits. (Maybe he'll learn French next. Or Tagalog.)
- Just for the record here: the Spanish Wikipedia first blocked him for a month in July 2014 for deliberately adding factual errors. (I guess they don't mess around over there with the low-hanging fruit on the blocking tree.) A few hours into that block, he started modifying other editors' messages on his talk page, so they re-blocked him for two months with talk page disabled. In August he started socking, so they extended the block again for an additional two months. In December, he began creating inappropriate pages as well, after which they blocked him for a year. He then started socking again, which bought him the indef block. The last entry in his block log is the change to block his talk page. He knows what he's doing and he knows how blocks progress. Not a newbie here.
- I thought about this for a bit. I don't think he really qualifies for a NOTHERE block (though YMMV), so I'd use my Spidey powers to vault up the blocking tree in one, maybe two steps (one week, one month), and if he persists after that I'd take him to ANI for a community ban. I feel we can go faster in his case because of his experience and blocks on es. If he returns after that block/blocks and continues to disrupt, we have an excellent case for the ban. That's what I'd do.
- I'll be around later this weekend after I catch up on reading the boards I missed during vacation. Did I miss anything great/awesome/stupid/sucky? KrakatoaKatie 19:05, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
- I appreciate the input. I've gotten a lot of resistance to community bans over the years. A lot of people feel that these are badges of honor to disruptive users, and simply by indeffing they are de facto banned. I'll ruminate. Nah, you didn't miss anything. Even if you did, I wouldn't tell you because it would just mean more time getting sucked out of your day. :D Welcome back! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:21, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Blocking IP address 86.182.32.83 on the Type 99 tank
Why did this IP address get banned exactly? I'm aware that it has something to do with disruptive editing, but is it possible to give a summary of his/her errors rather categorizing them? Kind regards, Khazar (talk) 01:34, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Al Khazar: He's not banned. He's blocked for 31 hours for adding unreliable/unsourced content after a final warning. The messages on the user talk page and the user's contributions can lead you in the right direction if the block message isn't clear to you. In this case, there was an RFPP request; I could have semi-protected the page, but this was the only user currently causing disruption. If/when he comes back, he'll either source his edits or he won't, and we'll go from there. If you have more questions, I'm happy to help. KrakatoaKatie 01:43, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
WikiCup 2015 September newsletter
The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.
In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.
The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:
- Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
- Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
- Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
- West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
- Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
- Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
- Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.
The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.
Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list
Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you! My disruptive editing
Hi Katie, I received a message from you regarding disruptive editing on the Orlando International Airport page. I'm new to wikipedia, and have been trying to learn how to join the community. Could you please enlighten me further as to what I did wrong, so I can make sure not to do it again? I live in Orlando, and wanted to contribute to pages regarding things I'm familiar with.
Thanks!

- @Jackichino: We have edit filters in place to prevent the spamming of external links. Your edits set off those filters repeatedly because you kept trying to add links to Uber and Lyft. Don't do that anymore, provide reliable sources for your edits, and we should have a much better experience. :-) KrakatoaKatie 05:01, 11 October 2015 (UTC)

Regula Headaches
Hi Katie - that looked like a complicated close. Thanks. (I'm not a regular editor but lurk a lot in fascination at the culture.) What I actually want to say is that I too have Cluster Headaches. Mine last for 5 or 6 months every second year, 4 to 6 a day between about 8 pm and 4 am. Nasty stuff. Doctors tried various drugs about 30 years ago but nothing worked. However, 7 years ago I discovered that drinking white wine in the evenings stops them for me. That cycle was much less painful than usual and stopped early. The next cycle I started drinking wine as soon as I started getting shadows, and the cycle never really started. The same happened last year, and I'm hoping that the same will happen next. My theory for why it works is that while most alcohol vehicles are vaso-dilators, white wine is a vaso-constrictor. There seem to be all sorts of individual reactions so this probably won't help you, but you never know... All the best and my sympathies - ghytred talk 13:21, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, gosh.. I have been using wiki for years and years and just never had nerve enough to even look into adding an Article. But now I think I have added one that I believe should have already been there. But there is so much to read, absorb and the DO IT right! WOW! Hopefully I told his story ok. I did look at sources and redid the data in my own words. and of course NAMED my sources as I always do. But I don't know if I did it right??????? and I have to go back to the Museum and get the name of the books his data is listed in. And may I add photos, the Portrait in the museum, and I have permission from the owner, like one of his headstone..??? Again, Thank you.(Gene/History buff) CaroleGreertaylor (talk) 23:11, 16 October 2015 (UTC)Greertaylor §
- @Greertaylor: No problem - we have lots of help available. Worry about the sourcing before you worry about the images. Images are optional but desirable; sourcing is mandatory. Take a look at articles on similar subjects to see how they're structured. That was a big help to me when I started.
- Ah, images. Freely-licensed images of headstones in the US are usually covered under what's called freedom of panorama, so if the photographer/artist licenses it appropriately, you should be okay. (That's not always the case in the rest of the world, particularly in some EU countries. Italy is a good example.) A portrait in an American museum is a little different and much depends on when it was made. I would ask specific questions at WP:MCQ.
- When you think your article is ready, you can submit it to Articles for creation and they'll give you feedback. Don't move it into the mainspace (meaning don't make it an article outside your user space) until you're ready, because you don't want it tagged for deletion while you're still working on it. Good luck, be bold, and have fun! :-) Katietalk 06:43, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
Matthew Steen Page deletion accusation?
Katie,
Re. the talk:Matthew Steen page. Sorry for the flood of messages on this. However, this part of Weathervane13's complaint is a bit disturbing: "A complaint and warning of vandalism was posted on the talk page the day after this was detected. However, the vandal deleted this from the talk page, although he started referencing vandalism immediately thereafter."
Shouldn't that show up in a history or something?

- @SteveJEsposito: Yes, it will show in the page history. You're allowed to remove any or all messages and warnings from your user talk page, but it's not acceptable to remove the comments of other editors from the article talk page. Honestly, I'd let it go at this point. If you get bogged down in stuff like that, the focus turns toward who-said-what-to-whom and away from fixing the article. I've explained to him that your edits aren't vandalism; it he persists in calling it that, there are steps that can be taken. I'll be offline this weekend upgrading the hardware in my MacBook Pro, so the BLP noticeboard is the best place to go to get lots of eyes on the issue. Katietalk 06:43, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
