Capitalisation in card games

Hi Krychek, thank you for your edits on Wikipedia. Please be aware that it is not incorrect to capitalise card names when describing card games. The sources divide almost equally into those that use capitals e.g. Ace, Jack, Five and those that don't e.g. ace, jack, five. Most American sources use lower case and most non-American sources use capitals. So we should prefer neither over the other and I'd be grateful if you'd revert your edits at Twenty-One and any other card game articles. Cheers. Bermicourt (talk) 07:42, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

I don't see anything in WP:MOS to indicate that individual playing cards are an exception to the guideline that game equipment should not be capitalized. If you can get that added to the MoS, I'd be happy to revert my edits. As it stands, I find this a very clear case of overcapitalization. Krychek (talk) 16:33, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

MOS is a great tool but it is no more than top level style guide of a tertiary-level source. It cannot claim to have primacy over primary and secondary sources nor does it cover every eventuality in every topic area. This is an area that hasn't been addressed before and our style should be informed and guided by the relevant reliable primary and secondary sources. I'm happy to summarise my research and give some examples if that helps. So I'd still be grateful if you'd revert your edit. Thanks. Bermicourt (talk) 16:48, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

I know you have no reason to believe me, but I'm actually the editor of several prominent bridge writers -- two of them British. I have read texts on bridge and many other card games. So I feel my own research is at least as relevant as yours. While I do not doubt that there are numerous examples of overcapitalized terms in the genre, that doesn't make it correct, and it absolutely goes against the general WP advice against capitalizing non-proper nouns. This is similar to the former practice of some WP writers to capitalize animal species. They always claimed that some source or other did it, so it must be OK. But it was decided that while those sources are experts on their subject matter, they are not experts on grammar or style, and it became the official WP position that we should leave species names lowercase. Please don't patronise me. I am also a researcher and author in this field. If you study a wide range of sources, you will find that they use both forms in roughly equal measure. However, there are trends. Single game books tend to use lower case and there is a general American trend for lower case informality which permeates card game books too. Neither are wrong, but nor are they universal. So what some see as "over" capitalization, others clearly see as perfectly acceptable. No need to respond; we're not going to agree on this one.
