I have drafted a press release and I would like some input. I have never wrote an "official" one so it is a very raw draft. Any suggestions on a "boiler plate?" I also think it may need some quotes. A word document is posted on the Google Wiki. Please comment if you can!

Museum Studies Students Document IUPUI Public Art

Undergraduate and Graduate Students Author Wikipedia Articles about Campus Art

Indianapolis, IN— As part of the Collections Care and Management Museum Studies course at IUPUI, students have searched and compiled a list of campus outdoor art to document on Wikipedia. Forty Wikipedia articles are to be published by December 1st, 2009 and each will include such details as artist information, location of the artwork, and a complete report on the condition of the piece.

This is the first phase of the Wikipedia Saves Public Art! project and will continue to grow with future classes. The focus of this process is for students to understand collaboration in a museum-like environment, identify and determine what should be included in a collection, and use Wikipedia as a content management system. Flickr will serve as the digital asset management system to store photographs of the pieces.

Information documented will be sent to the Smithsonian Institution’s Save Outdoor Sculpture! program and is intended to raise awareness of IUPUI campus art.

Image Copyright Information

A lot of people had questions in regards to image copyright laws so I thought I would do a bit of research on the subject. I referred mainly to the U.S. Copyright Office Webpage but here is a brief synopsis:

If using someone else's image you can find who owns the copyright by contacting the U.S. copyright office or searching through the records online. However it does cost money for the office to search for you (and we are all poor college students!) and seems like it would take longer than the two weeks we have left. But if you do know the copyright owner you can ask them for permission directly.

Since our images will be used for educational purposes it seems to coincide within the Fair Use guidelines. However these images will be published for public view on Wikipedia and the "educational purposes" argument is probably voided. A good rule of thumb is if in doubt, obtain permission.

I read over the webpage and only pulled out the most relevant points. For further research the website is very accessible and has a search box to locate specific content. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me!

Image Copyright Information Update

I have found some copyright tags that are very applicable to our project. If you upload your image on this Wikipedia:Upload and go directly to the form uploader located in the first paragraph (click on the "If you are familiar with our image policies and already know which license applies, go directly to the upload form" sentence) you are able to upload your images and tag accordingly. Here are the tags that fit our project:

• {{Non-free 2D art}}—for low resolution images of two dimensional works of art under copyright.
• {{Non-free 3D art}}—for images of three-dimensional works of art that are still under copyright.
• {{Non-free architectural work}}-for images of buildings that are still under copyright in areas where there is no freedom of panorama.

I hope this helps because I think everyone is uploading via commons and just assigning a public domain tag. If you do not use commons and apply both the public domain tag and any of the tags listed above it will actually stay on Wikipedia.

Collections Management Systems Analysis

To decide the best way to categorize our final Wikipedia articles on IUPUI outdoor sculpture, some research had to be performed. Three platforms were viewed- several Wikipedia articles, the Smithsonian Institution Research Information System (SIRIS), and Indiana’s Save Outdoor Sculpture project- and the following is an analysis of each. The purpose of this paper is to determine the optimum way to organize each Wikipedia article that will accommodate our intended outcomes for the IUPUI public art project. Suggestions for how to organize the future articles will be proposed in the conclusion.

The first article under consideration is titled List of Dog Breeds. The breeds are listed in a chart and in alphabetical order. Each dog listed is linked to an article on Wikipedia, supplying more information about the breed. Each column is abbreviated, which is a bit confusing at first, but each one is linked to an article explaining what it means. The two ideas that I enjoy the most is that almost all of the dogs listed have accompanying pictures and there is a bulleted list of more information that can be found on Wikipedia (the “See Also” section). The only cons of this article are that the list is incomplete and there are sections of the chart that are blank.

The second article for analysis is quite different then the first. It is titled Figure Skating and utilizes a “content” section. This allows for easy navigation and a viewer would be able to jump to any part of the article if they wish. While the content section is helpful the article is quite incomplete. The United States Figure Skating Association is not even mentioned and testing levels that all figure skaters are required to participate in are barely discussed.

The last article is titled Homo Erectus and is organized like the figure skating article. The content outline is again helpful but I particularly like the small area to the right of the page. There are highlights listed including “Conservation Status,” “Scientific Classification,” “Binomial Name,” and “Synonyms.” I also thought the images were used well and coincided with the information present and the external links are credible. A con to the article is that it is locked and permission to edit has to be requested. I understand this is a controversial subject but requesting permission to edit may deter an author from doing so.

All Wikipedia articles can be put into categories that allow viewers to search for articles by topic. Three categories that are relevant to our project are "Outdoor sculptures in Indiana," Outdoor Sculptures in Indianapolis,” and “Art WikiProjects.” The first is a topic category, the second is a subcategory of the first, and the final is called a project category. After reading the FAQ’s and exploring, I have determined that these are extremely confusing. Listing articles in categories is a good idea but one of the questions addressed is “Why is an article not in the categories I would expect?” Articles may be put in subcategories that would not show up in the initial topic category. If a researcher plans to find articles through categories it may take more time.

While it may take longer to search for information through the use of categories on Wikipedia, the Smithsonian Institution Research Information Systems (SIRIS) is vastly different. Once a keyword is typed in the search box the following page displays everything relevant in the collection that is associated with the search query. The best part of the database is that the search can be narrowed down by “limits,” such as if the item is a painting or photograph. The horizontal tabs at the top of the query offer different view options and even keeps track of the search history. This is an extremely easy way to navigate within the site and I was unable to determine any cons.

There is a publication online that discusses information in regards to the Indiana’s Save Outdoor Sculpture project. This PDF file was created to show a small portion of Indiana sculpture and invite people to find more. Information on Indiana’s sculpture was collected, organized, and stored in a permanent archive. This article is dated, mentioning that 1992 was the year that this project began, but at that time the public could either visit the Landmarks Resource Center or call the librarian at the phone number listed to inquire about sculptures.

The map of Indiana in the document shows how many sculptures are in each county and is an interesting way to present information. Taking into account that this information was published about sixteen years ago and that the amount probably has changed, I thought the map put in perspective how much public art really is present. A con about the Indiana’s Save Outdoor Sculpture publication is that detailed information would be kept at the resource center, making it a bit inconvenient. A step in the right direction was allowing researchers to call the librarian but it would be nice if these resources were updated and available online.

To conclude, multiple sources were reviewed including three Wikipedia articles, Wikipedia categories, the Smithsonian public database, and information about Indiana’s Save Outdoor Sculpture project. After analyzing each I have determined ways in which our final Wikipedia articles can be organized. There should be a master list of IUPUI sculptures on the Wikipedia Saves Public Art! page presented in a chart and listed alphabetically. The chart is for uniformity and should include categories such as location, owner, and an image. The names of the sculptures will be linked to the student’s individual essays and detailed information on the sculpture (materials, dimensions, condition, etc.) shall be documented on the right side of the page- similar to how the Homo Erectus article is formatted. A content section should be utilized on the WikiProject page and individual articles to allow viewers to jump to various sections. Lastly since there will be over forty articles about IUPUI public art sculptures it would be wise to link all of them together through the utilization of the “See Also” sections. It would be best to list all other sculptures in this section because we want viewers to see the IUPUI collection as a whole not just bits and pieces of it. Overall uniformity is key and formatting articles in such a way will allow for easy navigation not only within the individual article but for all of the articles about the public art on IUPUI’s campus.

Images

Hi editors! I uploaded several images (in regards to the Glory sculpture) forgetting to add the appropriate copyright tags. I could not figure out how to delete those and I apologize for duplicates. However both the Glory and the Peirce Geodetic Monument articles are for a class project and I would really like images to stay on the page. How can I keep them there? This is my first exploration with Wikipedia and I would appreciate guidance. Thank you.
