Hi James, I am not involved with Roar but do know its editors. I feel I would be in a good position to start its wiki page. Apologies. I am new to wiki and am learning about your copyright policies. I am affiliated with KCL Radio. Does this mean I will need to get someone else to writie the page? If so, can I start the page and get someone else to edit it?

The article KCL Radio has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

non-notable student "radio station". May start actually broadcasting next year.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Notability

Hi. As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia is selective about its subjects, unlike sites like Myspace where anyone can write about anything. Our main criterion for inclusion is called notability, and is not a matter of opinion but needs to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes Myspace, Facebook, blogs, places where anyone can post anything; independent excludes the subject's own website, affiliated ones and anything based on press releases.

Student clubs, newspapers, internet radio stations etc are very seldom notable and articles about them often get deleted, so think hard before you put much effort into trying to create them. Would you consider the article written by KCL independently of KCLSU and us notable? http://www.kcl.ac.uk/news/news_details.php?news_id=1460&year=2010 Also page 23 of King's' independent and official paper Comment (this is nothing to do with and is not influenced by the union) http://www.kcl.ac.uk/media/publications/comment.html Also our mention on the Alumni report page, again independent from us https://alumni.kcl.ac.uk/Page.aspx?pid=3546

I realise that all these references are from King's College London. However, KCLSU is completely separate.

If these are considered not noteworthy then fair enough. Will an article or two in The London Student (a university of London publication) suffice?

Notability and all that

No, I don't think those are enough for notability (not "noteworthiness" - Notability is a technical term in Wikipedia, and is not a matter of opinion). The first seems to be a press release, the alumni thing is just a mention in a long list, and what you really need is some indication that the subject has had some substantial interest outside the world of KCL, or of London students - an article (more than a mention) in a national newspaper, for instance, but even there one would probably not be enough. I am not Authority - we don't work like that - but that is my opinion.

Suggestions for reading (apologies for just giving you links, but it saves writing it all out again, and we have this sort of conversation very frequently):

• Wikipedia: Notability
• Wikipedia: Notability (organizations and companies)
• Wikipedia:No amount of editing can overcome a lack of notability - there's no point piling up trivial references
• WP:OUTCOMES#Education - a summary of the results of past deletion discussions.

Looking round the various notability guide pages, I have found Wikipedia:College and university article guidelines which includes, in the section WP:UNIGUIDE#Student life:

Under Wikipedia's rules for media notability, a campus or college radio station is notable if it is duly licensed by the appropriate media regulatory authority, such as the FCC in the United States or the CRTC in Canada. Unlicensed university or college radio stations which broadcast only on Part 15, carrier current or Internet radio may be mentioned in the school's main article, but are not entitled to independent articles unless they are themselves the subject of reliable secondary sources. Similarly, student newspapers may be mentioned in the school's main article, but need to be the primary subject of reliable secondary sources to qualify for independent articles.

I regret being so discouraging, and you are of course welcome to go ahead, but I should be sorry to see you pour into it the same amount of energy and emotion that your Netball Club colleagues did. You can read here the last two of several long rants they wrote explaining how wonderful and important their club was, but they never managed to get their heads round the idea that it could be wonderful and important in their terms and still not notable in ours. Their article ended with a long string of reference links, but they were to the websites of the student union bar, of the sports ground, of the supplier of their kit... multiplicity of inadequate references does not help.

I can see from your talk page that you've already been given advice about notability and how to establish it for this entry. In short, notability is established by third party sources, not by facts, whatever the facts may be.
